Chapter 367 367

Emile 卢梭 285Words 2018-03-18
I have said before why travel is for so many futile. And for young people, sending them out in this way is even more futile. The teachers, more concerned with delighting them than with instructing them, took the young from city to city, and palace to palace. If the teacher is a profound scholar, they will take the young people to soak in the library, or to visit historical sites, looking around on buildings with ancient inscriptions, looking for scattered words. In any country they are occupied with other centuries, as if they really lived in that country. In this way they traveled all over Europe, spending a great deal of money, bound either by dullness or triviality. When they came back, they didn't see anything they were really interested in, and they didn't learn anything useful to them.
