Chapter 98 Interests can influence each other

We've now discussed what kind of material sparks the interest of your audience. However, if you copy these methods mechanically, you are likely to make your speech boring and tiresome.Arousing and keeping people's interest is a very subtle thing, in essence, it is a subtle feeling and psychology. It is not as rule-based as manipulating a steam engine. It can be said that there are no certain rules. Interests can definitely influence each other. Not long ago, when I was giving a lecture in Baltimore, a gentleman made a speech in the middle of the class warning that if the present hunting of the rockfish in the Chesapeake Bay was not stopped, it would soon become extinct. He has thought about this topic for many years and knows its importance and urgency. When he started his speech, since I knew nothing about the topic, I thought that everyone would be as interested as I was, but before his speech was over, all the people present had a deep understanding of his point. Views, we unanimously agreed to submit a petition to the legislature, requesting legislation to protect this rockfish.

When I asked Richard Worthborn Child, when he was the American ambassador to Italy, "What is your secret to being an interesting and successful writer?" he answered me thus: " I am so passionate about life that I cannot help myself. Therefore, I offer my readers what I feel and think." Who would not be deeply moved by such a writer or speaker? Once upon a time, I heard a lecture in London. When the speech was over, one of us, a well-known English writer named Peng Sheng, made his own comments, saying that he was more interested in the second half of the speech. When I asked him why, he replied, "The speaker seemed more interested in the second half, and of course I was swayed by that."

This is true of any listener. You should keep this in mind.
