Chapter 28 Dr. Kenwall's Method for Designing Speeches
As I've said, there are no hard-and-fast rules for how best to organize a speech.In other words, there is no one design or scheme or format that works for all or most speeches; however, the following speech designs can be useful in some situations.Dr. Russell Kenwall, recently deceased and well-known author of The Land of Diamonds, once told me that he gave many lectures on the following outline:
(1) State the facts;
(2) Arguing the facts;
(3) A CALL TO ACTION.
Many speakers also found the following design helpful:
(1) list the problems;
(2) cure the problem;
(3) CALL FOR COOPERATION.
Or, to put it another way:
(1) There is a situation that requires radical treatment;
(2) We should take measures to deal with this situation;
(3) Your reasons for this action.
The following outline is another concise design for a speech:
(1) Obtain the attention of those who are interested;
(2) Earn trust;
(3) State the facts and call attention to the value of your proposal;
(4) A call to action to achieve the goal.
