Chapter 2 Chapter 1 Requirements for Public Speaking

People envy those who conquer the world with their speeches, such as Lincoln, George Bernard Shaw and other famous orators, but people agree that they have no ability to be like them, at least in this life.In fact, no one is a natural orator, no matter the situation. People have always had a fear of public speaking, and they tremble with nervousness when asked to speak in public. However, there have been periods in history when speaking as a fine art flourished.Public speaking? It's nothing. Being able to make a successful public speech calmly, or being able to speak eloquently in front of many people, will make your future immeasurable. Therefore, those who want to be successful will strive to improve their ability to speak in public.Of course, one has to work very hard if one wants to be a good public speaker. But now, we think of public speaking as an expanded conversation. At a banquet, in church, or watching TV or listening to the radio, what we want to hear are straightforward words and common sense ideas, not rhetoric and blunt speeches.

As a result, public speaking is no longer an art that requires as much effort to master as it once did. It's as easy as speaking, just follow some simple rules. If so, what is the simple and effective method of public speaking? This is a difficult question to answer.Based on years of experience, I believe that in order to achieve success in public speaking, at least the following three aspects should be paid attention to. A speech can only be more attractive if you add your own personal experience, and you can make the speech more exciting. Not long ago, the teachers and students of Carnegie's eloquence training class had a discussion at the Conrad Hilton Hotel in Chicago.During the discussion, a student stood up and said in an impassioned tone: "I believe that freedom, equality, and fraternity are the greatest ideas of human beings. Once there is no freedom, life loses its meaning. Let us try to imagine , what a miserable life it would be if our movements were restricted everywhere!"

The teacher stopped the student and asked him why he wanted to talk about this topic, why he came to such a conclusion, and could he talk about his personal feelings on this topic.Next, the student told a thrilling story that happened to him. He used to be an underground worker in France and experienced the harsh rule of the Nazi Party. He and his family were persecuted and abused by the Nazi Party. They escaped the pursuit of the Nazi Party's secret police very narrowly, and finally arrived in the United States after going through untold hardships. Finally he said: "Today, I came to this restaurant freely from Michigan Avenue, swaggering past a policeman. When I arrived at the hotel, I was not asked to show identification. When the discussion was over, I I can go wherever I want. Therefore, please believe that freedom is worth fighting for." His words were met with thunderous applause.

The trainee was able to make such an empty, serious topic so attractive precisely because he added his own personal experience. So, if you want to be successful in public speaking, the best subject to speak on is your own personal experience. If you have experienced something yourself, or if you have thought about it and made it a part of you, you can be sure that this topic is suitable for you.You can revisit the past and find meaningful and impressive things in your own experience. They can be personal growth stories, personal struggle stories, personal hobbies, professional knowledge, unusual experiences, or personal beliefs and beliefs. These are the topics most appreciated by the audience, and thus most attractive to the audience.

If you articulate what life has taught you in your speech, I think you will have a great audience.Of course, this point of view is not so easily accepted by the speakers; on the contrary, they tend to avoid personal experience, because these things are too trivial and narrow. They like to talk about some general concepts or philosophies, but in fact, these things are more difficult to accept.People like news, but if you show them an editorial, how can they like it?Even if people like editorials, you shouldn't be doing it, they're going to ask a reporter to do it.Therefore, if possible, you still talk about the revelation of life to you!As long as you speak well, the audience will like you very much.

You must never assume that these topics are too personal, or too minor, for the audience to enjoy listening to.In fact, it is such a topic that can make the audience happy and move everyone. I remember that in 1926, I participated in the 7th meeting of the League of Nations in Geneva. The first few speakers deadened the meeting, practically reading their own speeches. Then, Sir George Falstein of Canada took the stage to give a speech. He did not bring any manuscripts and notes. He was full of enthusiasm throughout the speech, often using various gestures, and seemed very sincere. You can see that he is invested in what he said.He expressed his views with sincerity and hoped that his audience would believe him too.He articulated the message very clearly and unequivocally.

Not everything you are qualified to talk about will necessarily attract an audience. For example, I am a hardworking man who does housework every day, so I am certainly qualified to talk about mopping the floor. However, I'm not enthusiastic about mopping floors, in fact I don't want to bring it up at all, can I get this topic right? However, when some housewives come to talk about this topic, they seem to have endless interest in it, and they are also very involved and full of passion when talking about it.So they will speak very well. Contagious speeches are made because the speakers themselves are passionate about speaking; and those who are not passionate about their speeches always look less believable.

Bishop Fusheng J. Xin, a famous American orator, did not understand this truth at the beginning. When Bishop Fusheng J. Xin was studying, he was fortunate to be a member of the college debate team. But one day, their debating professor called him into his office and gave him a severe reprimand. "You're a sucker!" said the professor mercilessly. "No one has ever spoken out like you." He was referring to a speech Fusheng gave not long ago.Fu Sheng was about to explain, when the professor asked him to repeat that speech.Fu Sheng did so, and it took him almost an hour. The professor asked him:

"Do you now know why it sucks?" Fu Sheng didn't realize it all at once.So the professor became even more annoyed, and said to Fu Sheng, "Please repeat it again!" Fu Sheng had no choice but to repeat the original manuscript for another hour. In the end, he was exhausted. The professor asked him, "Do you understand now?" Fu Sheng said, "Yes." The two-and-a-half-hour conversation left a deep impression on Fu Sheng, and he kept the truth he realized in his heart. The idea is this: put yourself into the speech. So, before you contemplate public speaking, it's a good idea to make sure you're passionate about what you're talking about. If you can't do that, then it's best to find a subject that you're passionate about.

A speech is composed of three elements: the speaker, the content of the speech, and the audience. Problems with any one of these elements will lead to the failure of the speech. The two aspects introduced earlier discussed the relationship between the speaker and the content of the speech. However, in order to achieve a successful speech, it is only truly complete if it is approved by the audience, which means that we must pay attention to resonating with the audience. A good speaker is never self-centered, but listener-centered.They are always eager to see their listeners agree with him, to feel the same way he does, and he wants not only to be passionate himself, but to convey that passion to his audience. This principle sounds simple, but it is difficult to implement.

As part of the thrift campaign, I once gave speech training to some of the staff of the New York Chapter of the American Bankers Institute. One of the trainees encountered difficulties: he found that no matter how hard he tried, he could not mobilize the enthusiasm of the audience, nor could he communicate with the audience.I told him that 85 percent of people in New York who die leave nothing to their families; only 3.3 percent leave $10,000 or more.So what he's talking about is helping his listeners prepare so that they can grow old comfortably and leave their wives and children safe. All he has to do is let his audience know that what he has to say is really helpful to them. He thought about it deeply and carefully, and finally realized the importance of empathizing with the audience. Therefore, when he was giving a speech, he tried to find out what the audience was interested in, and actively communicated with them in this regard. In this way, he finally succeeded. The above three methods are the very basic methods I have summed up, and they can really help us to speak better in public. If you want to practice and master speaking skills, you must go through your own practice. Therefore, these specific methods should also be obtained from your own experience.
