Chapter 260 Chapter 259 Wuxing Wang Gao Jixing

Gao Jixing, whose real name is Jichang and style name Yisun, was born in Xiashi, Shanzhou (now south of Sanmenxia, Henan).Born in the twelfth year of Tang Dazhong (AD 858), and died in the third year of Tang Tiancheng (AD 928). Gao Jixing lived in Bianzhou in his early years and was the son of the wealthy businessman Li Rang. After Zhu Quanzhong took possession of Bianzhou, Li Rang was adopted by Quanzhong as his adopted son by donating money. Gao Jichang was also appreciated by Quanzhong and was appointed as the commander of Yiyong. In the second year of Tianfu (902 A.D.) of Emperor Zhaozong of Tang Dynasty, Zhu Quanzhong led his army to attack Li Maozhen in Fengxiang (now Fengxiang, Shaanxi).Ji Chang offered a false surrender plan, and ordered his warrior Ma Jing to rush into Fengxiang, leading Li Maozhen's army out of the city, where they were defeated by the Quanzhong army.Gao Jichang became famous because of this, and was awarded the training envoy of Songzhou (now Shangqiu, Henan). In October of the third year of Tianyou (906 A.D.), not long after Quanzhong captured Jingnan, he sent Gao Jichang here to serve as Jingnan Jiedu. The following year, Quan Zhong proclaimed himself emperor and officially appointed Ji Chang as Jingnan Jiedu envoy.

Jingnan Jiedushi originally had 8 prefectures under his jurisdiction in the Tang Dynasty. However, when Gao Jichang first took office, he could only govern the isolated city of Jiangling (now Jiangling, Hubei), and other areas had long been divided by surrounding countries. In the second year of Qianhua (AD 912), Zhu Quanzhong, the Emperor of Liang, was murdered. The state government of the Liang Dynasty declined and civil strife continued. After Later Tang destroyed Liang, Gao Jichang returned to Later Tang, changed his name to Ji Xing in order to avoid the taboo of Tang, and was named King of Nanping, but still independent.

Although Gao Jixing formed his own unity in Jingnan, his jurisdiction was only Jiangling and the Xiazhou and Guizhou (now Yichang and Zigui, Hubei), which he acquired later. He was the weakest of the Ten Kingdoms.Jingnan is not only a weak country, but also an important place, with the Central Plains Dynasty in the north, Shu in the west, Wu (Southern Tang) in the east, and Chu in the south.Gao Jixing, who was caught in the gap between various countries, adopted an extremely realistic national policy, which was to surrender to all countries. For the Central Plains dynasty in the north, whenever a new dynasty was established or a new emperor ascended the throne, he would pay tribute and congratulate him.For the southern countries, he also called himself a vassal. In this way, on the one hand, you can get a large number of rewards from the other party, and on the other hand, you can temporarily avoid the disaster of soldiers overwhelming the country.

Although he often bowed his head to his neighbors, Gao Jixing had a hobby, which was to plunder the envoys of various countries passing through Nanping. The kings of all countries despised this Nanping king very much, and gave him the nickname "Gao Laizi", and some people called him "Gao Laizi", and they didn't care much about him.Of course, if he encounters a country he cares about, he will act out a dangerous drama of sending troops to the city.In May of the second year of Tiancheng (AD 927), Shi Guangxian, an envoy sent by Chu to the Later Tang Dynasty, returned from Luoyang with 10 horses and two beauties. When passing by Jiangling, Gao Jixing couldn't bear it, and grabbed it again, and detained Shi Guangxian.Ma Yin, the king of Chu, seemed to be lacking in stamina, so he sent Wang Huan, deputy envoy of the Sixth Army, and others to lead a large-scale attack. The Nanping army was defeated, and the Chu army advanced to Jiangling.Gao Jixing hurriedly sent Shi Guangxian and the horse beauty to seek peace.

On December 15th in the third year of Tiancheng, Gao Jixing died of illness at the age of 71.Posthumously named "Wuxing King", he was buried in the west of Jiangling City.
