Chapter 2 preface

General History of China 吕思勉 530Words 2018-03-16
At Guanghua University in Shanghai, I have lectured on the history of my country for more than ten years. In the beginning, it was about general history.Later Mr. Qian Ziquan, dean of literature, said: It is better to talk about cultural history than to talk about general history and the history of the country below middle school. So turn to cultural history. In the twenty-seventh year of the Republic of China, the Ministry of Education promulgated university courses; at first, the history of Chinese culture was a compulsory first-year subject for each department, and later it was changed to general history, and it was noted that it should focus on culture.Probably because the political aspect is also indispensable, and I am afraid that this aspect will be too neglected if it is called cultural history. The intention is sincere and thorough. However, the teaching of general history lasted for a total of 120 hours. If the compilation is still the same as that of books below middle school, I am afraid that it will inevitably be repeated. So I will teach it now and divide it into two parts: the first volume takes cultural phenomena as the title, and the second volume is linked according to the times, so as to take into account both aspects (political history has been moved to the first volume, and cultural history has been changed to the second volume in this book——Publisher Note). This idea has already been mentioned in the introduction of this book. This book was compiled by living on an isolated island, and there are no reference books available; and the time is very short. It cannot be perfected, of course. However, to explore all aspects of culture, to explain the reasons for its changes, and to deduce the origin of the current situation; there seem to be not many such books now, or they may be enough for reference. Therefore, when the first volume is written, it will be printed immediately to replace the copying. If it is not complete, it should be added in the future. The meaning of this book is to ask the Chinese people to understand more about the origin of the current situation. Therefore, the narrative strives to be concise, and the writing also strives to be simple. He also cited various social science theories to illustrate. It can also be used as a general reading material; the first volume alone can be used for cultural history teaching or reference. Its shallowness and misconceptions should be corrected by contemporary people.

On September 28th, the twenty-eighth year of the Republic of China, Lu Simian knew it.
