On May 30, 1942, a thousand bombers of the U.S. and British Air Forces carried out "saturation bombing" on the German city of Cologne on the Rhine. On July 30, 1943, the US and British air forces jointly bombed the German seaport city of Hamburg. On February 13, 1944, 773 Gemini bombers of the Allied forces bombed Dresden, a famous historical and cultural city in Germany. On June 16, 1944, 63 B-29 strategic bombers of the U.S. Air Force took off from Chengdu Airport in China and bombed the Kitakyushu Hachiman Iron and Steel Plant east of Tokyo. On the night of March 9, 1945, 300 US B-29 strategic bombers bombed Tokyo, killing 70,000 to 80,000 people and leaving 1.5 million homeless.
