Home Categories Chinese history The Republic of China in the depths of history 1 Late Qing Dynasty
Before continuing to talk about Cixi and her team, let us go back to the Xianfeng era for a while, because there are some events that have a profound impact on modern Chinese history that must be explained. Ten years before the "Xinyou Coup", that is, one year after Xianfeng succeeded to the throne, that is, in 1851, a major event occurred that destroyed the foundation of the Qing Dynasty. Before Hong Xiuquan, the hero of the big event, comes on stage, please appreciate the three poems produced by this person. Let me start with a public service poem that aims to show that drug use is harmful to health and advise people to stay away from opium:

Here is another chanting poem: And the first to his wives: He actively participated in the compilation of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom "Children's Poetry", there is a sentence called "Whether circumcised or uncircumcised, who is not born by God", which means that whether you are circumcised or not, you are born by God's mother anyway.Compared with Huang Chao, who is also a rebel, wrote the poem "Budi Houfu Ju": "When autumn comes and September 8th, I will kill the flowers after they bloom. The fragrance of the sky penetrates Chang'an, and the city is full of golden armor", Hong Xiuquan Students may not even be able to write folk songs.

Let everyone know Hong Xiuquan's true literary level in advance, so that everyone will not be too surprised when they see the following Hong Xiuquan's study history and failure history—— However, the process of Hong Xiuquan's 23-year cold window and 15 years of tireless fighting against the lowest level of the hospital examination was quite painful. In order to help everyone better understand Hong Xiuquan's pain, and to pave the way for the story that happened later, here is a brief introduction to the imperial examination system. Before the Sui Dynasty, most of the officials were selected from the children of the rich and powerful in various places. Regardless of their character and ability, these officials and wealthy generations could be officials.

Later, when he came to Emperor Yang Guang of the Sui Dynasty, he felt that it was not an option to go on like this, so he developed a good way to select talents-reading to get scholars, which is the imperial examination that was popular for 1,300 years later. Since then, people who want to be officials have made their careers in reading, even if they are squeezed out, no one cares. Although the imperial examination system began in the Sui Dynasty, it was carried forward in the Ming Dynasty, and the Qing Dynasty was basically consistent with the Ming Dynasty. In the Qing Dynasty, the exam was divided into four levels.

The first level, the hospital examination. Not everyone can take the college exam. If you want to take the college exam, you must take the preliminary selection exam to obtain the exam qualification. The scope of the selection examination is county (county examination) and city (prefectural examination), and those who pass the county examination and prefectural examination are collectively called Tongsheng. Although they are called Tongsheng, Tongsheng are not all children. There are also uncles in their 30s and 40s, and old men in their 70s and 80s. Those who pass the college examination are the scholars we are all familiar with.

After becoming a scholar, he got rid of his identity as a commoner. He was also an intellectual, and he also had some privileges, such as exempting one or two family members from the corvee, and seeing the county magistrate without kneeling or scolding the street. No spanking etc.But a scholar is not an official. If you want to be an official, you have to continue to struggle! The second level, the rural examination. The so-called township examination does not refer to the examination in the village, but the provincial-level unified examination held in the provincial capital, usually every three years, and only scholars or those with the same education, such as supervising students, are eligible to participate.Pass the exam and be promoted to Juren. The first one is called Jie Yuan, like the famous Tang Bohu.

Juren's education is already very good, and he is qualified to be an official, but the state does not guarantee that you will be an official, similar to today's college graduates who do not include assignments. The third level, will try. It is held in the capital, and only elites from various provinces who have passed the Juren are eligible to participate. The first place is called Huiyuan. The elites who pass the examination will face the last test, or they will usher in the highest honor of the imperial examination-the palace examination. The fourth level, palace examination. The palace examination, that is, the examination presided over by the emperor himself, began with Wu Zetian and was completed by Zhao Kuangyin. It can be regarded as the joint invention of these two people. The specific examination method is that the emperor asks questions, candidates answer, and finally ranks candidates according to their performance.

There are three prizes in the palace examination: The first prize: that is, the first prize, the number of winners is three—the number one scholar, the second place, and the first prize, called Jinshi and No. 1. The second prize: that is, the number two, the number varies every year, and it is called Jinshi. The third prize: that is, the top three, a certain number, the number varies every year, and it is said that they are from the same Jinshi background. Congratulations, to the elites who have passed this test, becoming an official is basically a certainty.
