玉罕回答：我说过，我母亲非常善良，这是大家公认的。她不想害人，也就不想养蛊。当然解决的办法也是有的，很简单，只需找一只小箱子，用布把蛇蛊包裹起来放在箱子底层，再在上面放些贵重的物品，比如说金银首饰之类，经过一番掩饰和祈祷之后，把小箱子偷偷放在路旁，让那些贪图钱财的过路人把小箱子带走。这样一来就能把蛇蛊嫁出去了。但是，这种做法，虽然自己没事了，但却坑害了过路的人。我母亲不忍心这样做，她太善良了，不会害人。我母亲年轻时是个大美人，而且什么活计都能干。她嫁到勐乃寨后，我波（父亲）很爱她，两人过了十几年的幸福生活。但没想到我母亲的婆婆是个放蛊的人。那一年，婆婆死了，有人就悄悄说，是我母亲继承了婆婆的遗蛊。据说，她婆婆的祖上因为不慎得罪了某种神灵，因此，就只有通过养蛇蛊害人，才能得到那种神灵的宽恕，而且必须代代相传，传媳不传女。如果有几个儿媳，只有大儿媳有权继承。因此，寨里的人便时时处处提防我母亲，害怕中了我母亲的蛇蛊。时间一长，便有人说我母亲放蛊比她婆婆厉害。恰恰有一天，我母亲从一个猪圈旁走过，无意朝里面望了一眼。主人当时目睹了那一幕，预感到他家的猪要出事了。果然不出所料，当天晚上，那家人的猪突然死了。全寨人对此议论纷纷，都认为是我母亲放蛊，要把我母亲撵出寨子。但由于得到我父亲的保护，寨里的人不敢把我母亲怎样。但好景不长，有一次，我母亲和我父亲到山中挑柴，累了，就在一条小溪旁歇息，顺便喝了几口泉水。当时太阳很辣，我母亲困倦不堪，喝水之后，她就地躺下，不一会就睡着了。我父亲不忍心打搅她的好梦，就坐在她身边吸旱烟。这时，我父亲发现自己面前有一条可怜的小毛虫，正想过沟，但苦于无路可走。于是，小毛虫不断四处求索，险象环生，几次差点儿被溪水冲走。我父亲为它提心吊胆，就随手抓起一根枝条，为它搭建了一座小木桥。小毛虫爬上那根枝条，顺利地到达了对岸。恰恰在那个时候，我母亲刚好醒来，她笑着对我父亲说，刚才我做了一个梦，梦中遇到一条大河，我想了许多办法，也没能渡过，是你走来为我建造了一座漂亮的小木桥，我才得以顺利过河。我父亲一听，当时就觉得很蹊跷，回家以后，就去请教有经验的老人。有位老人告诉他，因为你媳妇是个琵琶鬼，所以在她睡觉的时候，她的灵魂就会变成各种蛆虫，到处游动。我父亲吓坏了，他是个胆小的人。从此以后，我父亲再也不敢与我母亲同床，甚至大白天也不敢多看我母亲一眼。我母亲在我父亲眼中，始终是一条可怕的毛毛虫，我们兄弟姊妹5人，也成了他眼中大大小小的5条蛆。后来，我父亲对我母亲说，我不能再把你们留在勐乃寨了，你们回白心寨吧！永远不要回来，我不想再见到你们。当天，我母亲含着眼泪把我们带回白心寨，并对我们说，你波（爹）不要我们了，他的心死了，我们自己搭棚建楼，一定要活下去。那时，我外婆还在世，她收留了我们。如果没有我外婆，那我们真是无家可归了。我说过，我母亲很能干，也很坚强，是她一手把我们兄弟姊妹5人养大成人的。所以，现在只要有人提起我父亲，我们都说他死了。 苏合林日记一则（1903年6月21日下午3时，晴）： 今天，玉腊姑娘又来找我了。她不停地哭，哭了好一会才止住。我很难过，但不知怎样帮助她。我说，玉腊姑娘，今天你为什么不去采茶？玉腊回答，茶园的主人不要我了，他们把我赶出来，说我身上不干不净，有毒蛊。同伴们一见我就大喊大叫……毒莫噗……毒莫噗（不能与有蛊人家的女人来往）。 送别玉腊姑娘的时候，我看着她一步一步脱离我的视线范围。她的身影有如一只受到惊吓的小鸟，每一步都好像在躲避什么，看上去犹如她前后左右都有某种微妙的恐惧因素，使她那颗不安的心，随时都有可能掉到地上，被人践踏。
