Chapter 1 translator's preface
Before this book, there was "Biography of Beethoven"; after this book, there was "Biography of Tolstoy": together they are the immortal "Biography of Celebrities" of Romain Rolland. The idea of translating this book is the same as that of translating "Biography of Beethoven", so there is no need to say more here.It is sacrilege to place an indecent prologue before a monumental original. Therefore, I will only state the following points: 1. This book is a full translation based on the original eleventh edition. However, because the anthology of Mie’s poems in the appendix is the original Italian text (the translator is incompetent), and has been quoted a lot in this article, it was deleted without authorization.
2. After the appendix, there is a detailed bibliography (bibliographies of English, German, American, and Italian), which is omitted because it is not needed by the current domestic reading circle.
3. Except for the deletion of the least important ten or so chapters in the original text, the rest are all translated in full. Therefore, the strictness of scholars in the West can be seen as an example for me.
