Chapter 13 Beethoven-10

When the joyous theme first appeared, there was a sudden break; there was a sudden silence; which gave the beginning of the singing something mysterious and divine. And that's good: the subject is indeed a god. "Joy" descends from the sky, wrapped in an unreal tranquility: it soothes the pain with its soft breath; and when it slips into the heart of the recovering person, its first caress is so gentle, It is like Beethoven's friend who couldn't help "seeing his soft eyes and weeping for tears".When the theme then transitions to the vocals, the bass is first, with a serious and oppressive tone.Slowly, "Joy" takes hold of life.It is a conquest, a struggle against pain. Then there is the rhythm of the march, the mighty army, the tenor's passionate and rapid song, in these boiling movements, we can hear Beethoven's breath, his breathing, and the rhythm of his inspired call, vividly He gallops across the fields, composing his music, driven by ecstasy of passion, like King Lear in a thunderstorm. After the joy of war comes the intoxication of religion; after that comes the holy feast, and again the excitement of love. The whole human being stretched its arms to the sky, rushed towards "Joy" with a loud cry, and hugged it tightly in its arms.

The giant's tome finally triumphed over the vulgarity of the masses. The frivolity of Vienna, which was then completely under the influence of Rossini and the Italian opera, was shaken for a moment by it.Depressed and melancholy, Beethoven was thinking of moving to London, where he would play the Ninth Symphony.Again, as in 1809, several noble friends begged him not to leave his country. They said: "We know that you have completed a new sacred music. A refers to the "Mass in D". It expresses your sentiments inspired by your deep faith. The surreal light that permeates your heart, shines on this work. We also know that on the crown of your great symphony, another immortal flower has been added... Your silence in recent years has made everyone who pays attention to you sad. Beethoven for the trivial Worry, poverty, and all kinds of troubles. During the five years from 1816 to 1821, only three piano pieces were written (works No. 101, 102, and 106) .His enemies say that his talents have been exhausted and he has only returned to work since 1821. Everyone thinks sadly that our genius Occupying such a lofty position among human beings, you are silent....Only in you, the whole nation looks forward to new life, new glory, and a new era of truth and beauty regardless of the current fashion...But May you make our hopes come true soon... May the coming spring, thanks to your genius, be redoubled for us and for mankind!" This is an event in 1824, signed by C.Prince Lichnovsky and more than 20 people. This impassioned letter attests to the prestige Beethoven enjoyed among the German elite, not only artistically but also morally. When his admirers praised his genius, the first word that came to mind was neither academics nor art, but "faith".On February 1, 1819, when Beethoven asked for custody of his nephew, he proudly declared in the Vienna City Hall: "My moral character is recognized by everyone."

Beethoven was moved by these words and decided to stay.On May 7, 1824, the first concert of "Mass in D" and "Ninth Symphony" was held in Vienna, which achieved unprecedented success. The heat of the situation was almost riotous. When Beethoven appeared on the stage, he was welcomed by the crowd with five applause; in this country, which pays attention to etiquette, it is customary to use only three applause for the appearance of the royal family. So the police had to intervene. The symphony caused a frantic commotion. Many people wept.Beethoven was so moved that he fainted after the finale; they carried him to Schindler's house, where he fell asleep with all his clothes on, without food or drink, until the next morning. But the victory was temporary, and it was of no benefit to Beethoven. The concerts never made him any money. The distress of material life remains the same.He was poor, sick, lonely, and yet conquered:—over the mediocrity of mankind, over his own destiny, over his misery. In the autumn of 1824 he feared that he would die in a violent illness. "Like my dear grandfather, how much I resemble him." He had a terrible stomach problem. In the winter of 1824-25, he came back again in May 1825. He vomited blood and had nosebleeds. On June 9 of the same year, he wrote to his nephew, saying: "I am extremely weak, and the day of my long sleep is coming." Frankfurt; London, March 25, 1825; Paris, May 27, 1831, at the National Conservatory.Seventeen-year-old Mendelssohn, playing the piano on November 14, 1826, in the Hunter Hall in Berlin. When Wagner was teaching at the University of Leipzig, he copied them all by hand; and on October 6, 1830, he wrote to the publisher Schott, suggesting that he change the symphony into a piano piece. It can be said that the "Ninth Symphony" determined Wagner's career.
