邓丽君对这里情有独钟，她先后3次到过清迈，每次都住在同一家名叫“湄滨（Mae Ping）”的酒店里。
湄滨酒店地处清迈一条繁华的街道上。平时，这条路车水马龙，街道两旁大多是一些低矮的房子，这里既有大商场，也有小贩沿街摆摊。邓丽君每到清迈，都喜欢在这条街上买水果，吃她特别中意的排骨汤面。
邓丽君曾经3次到清迈，每次都住在湄滨酒店，第一次是1994年的12月，住的是一般的套房，第二次是1995年2月5日，住到了3月中旬便退房，第三次是4月2日，住在15楼的“王子套房”，一住就是36天，最终却魂归此处。
然而，邓丽君每次来到湄滨酒店，每次住不了几天就生病。1994年12月，第一次到来，邓丽君住了几天就不舒服，一整天都在流鼻涕，患了严重的感冒，结果在医院住了一个晚上，接受医生的治疗。但是，邓丽君从医院回到酒店，身体状况还是不好，感冒又患了两次，不过她没有再去医院，她请了医师到酒店来为她诊断，医师替她配药服用后，她很快恢复正常。
1995年2月5日，邓丽君第二次到清迈，住进这家酒店后，同样感到身体不舒服，她再度把医师请到酒店来。湄滨酒店的经理反映，酒店人员只知道邓丽君的健康状况很差，并不了解她患了什么病，后来听说她的呼吸器官不好。
4月2日第三次住进酒店，邓丽君的气色让服务人员感觉她较前两次更差，幸好精神还不错，见到人总是笑脸相迎，非常客气和人聊几句，酒店服务人员都觉得她是没有架子的名艺人。
邓丽君和保罗到达清迈后，住进了湄滨酒店的贵宾套房，而她前两次来清迈都住在普通套房里。离开台湾的时候，家人就对她的身体状况极为担心。为了怕妈妈担心她的健康，邓丽君在5月5日打电话回家，问候母亲及家人。在电话里，邓丽君表示虽然在泰国哮喘病时有发作，但健康还是没有大问题。家人闻知，甚为担忧，特地提醒她一定要注意身体保健，没想到隔了三天，邓丽君就因气喘发作而过世。
1995年5月8日下午4时左右，泰国清迈湄滨酒店，邓丽君下榻的1502房间，传出重重的敲门声。湄宾酒店的服务员闻声后立即前往邓丽君住宿的房间察看。服务员看到Miss Deng趴在门口地上，几乎喘不过气来，他们发觉事态不对。据说，邓丽君以前在该酒店，曾多次为她服务的侍者们对她的病情有所了解，因此众人七手八脚地把邓丽君移到酒店咖啡座急救，饭店服务生用力为邓丽君锤胸、按摩，并拿出她自备放在服务台的急救器材急救，但是她的气喘并未减轻。女服务生则把手伸进邓丽君嘴里，免得她咬住自己的舌头。他们随即火速把邓丽君送往医院。
在离开酒店、送往医院途中，邓丽君气喘加剧，前往护送的酒店侍者清楚地记得邓丽君生命的最后一刻，她喘的越来越厉害，抚着胸口，一直呼喊着母亲。
5时30分左右，邓丽君被送往清迈兰姆医院急诊室，她曾两次在这里治疗过哮喘病，值班的苏密医生以前也救治过邓丽君，对她的病情比较清楚。据院方表示，邓丽君当时的神智已经不甚清楚，尤其抵达医院时，已经出现脸色发青，心跳、脉搏中止，瞳孔放大的病危迹象，因此虽然清迈蓝姆医院的急救医师实施了强心针、电击等紧急抢救措施，急救了一个多小时，效果甚微，最后也只能宣告急救无效。据苏密医生介绍，邓丽君于1994年12月30日曾发病，同样是非常紧急，好在回天有力。他说，这一次邓丽君被送到医院时已经出现病危迹象，她是在路上撒手人世的。在1995年5月8日17时30分，一代巨星邓丽君就此与家人与全世界广大歌迷永远告别。
5月8日晚上11点多，邓丽君的死讯传到台北家中，这天也正是邓丽君父亲的祭日。那天，保罗挂了紧急越洋电话到台湾，邓丽君的三嫂接到了电话，在电话中保罗慌张地说“Something happen”。等邓长禧回家后，急忙回电，保罗告诉他“She is gone, no more Teresa”。邓家都不敢相信这个消息，倒真希望又像从前一样，是媒体“开玩笑”。由于邓丽君病发时气喘药没带在身边，邓丽君的三哥邓长富很恼火，对保罗很不谅解，总觉得他没有将妹妹照顾好。然而现实是残酷的。于是邓丽君的弟弟邓长禧与几位亲友立刻搭乘泰航633班机抵港，再由香港飞往泰国清迈。
他们于泰国时间10日晚上11：05分抵达清迈，刚下飞机，便有人接他们立刻驱车前往兰姆医院。院方工作人员安排他们进入医院后座，里面有一间房，已摆设了一个简单的灵堂，这位国际巨星在医院的灵堂，也仅仅是简单地放着有几个花牌，一个写着“永怀才艺”，一个写“巨星陨落”，一个是“南天星陨”，分别是由于倩以及台湾新闻局长致送的，中间则悬着“音容宛在”的花牌。并设置了简易的佛坛，有法师为邓丽君诵经并办理法事。
邓长禧等数人先在灵堂拜访的三层佛坛前上香，虔诚的向佛像鞠躬三拜，然后再进入右侧冷冻室内探视邓丽君。邓丽君身着粉红色睡衣，面容安详。室内则响起颂经声。此时不时有哭泣声传出。半小时后，邓长禧在友人陪同下走出来，他神情悲怆，不愿讲什么。之后塔车前往湄滨酒店。
魂断清迈在泰国的新闻发布会上，邓家表示要把邓丽君运回台北，不作解剖，而根据泰国的法律规定，死者遗体若运出泰国，必先获泰方发给的死亡证明书和完成遗体防腐程序，再经驻泰代表处验证。由于邓丽君的特殊地位，泰国当局并未完全按规定要求限制邓家，而是简单由泰国高僧举办法会后，就发还邓家以不经解剖的遗体。邓丽君的遗体终被安放在白色泰式棺木里，以五公斤的干冰冷冻防腐，棺木盖好后便用纸皮封好，再用白布包裹。在棺木运上灵车时，家人在棺木旁一边走，一边手持一只香，口中念着经，要带邓丽君的亡魂返家。
自5月8日在泰国清迈猝逝后，经折腾多日，邓丽君的遗体终在台北时间11日晚间10时30分，经曼谷运返台北桃园中正机场。

泰航633客机停在二号机坪，薄薄的棺木慢慢由机舱口吊下来，触地的一刹那，邓长禧低喊：“姐姐，到家啦！”眼泪再也忍不住了。
为了对这位国宝级艺人致最后的尊崇，台湾方面一切手续从简，并在机场进口仓库布置了简单的灵堂，鲜花、素果，中央放着一幅丽君生前最喜爱的照片，侄女们手执数束百合花，朋友捧着一盆玉兰花，哭红了双眼。现场除了邓家亲属、悲伤的歌迷以及台湾官员外，还有华视总经理张家骥，日本金牛宫长篇公司社长、副社长，以及海内外媒体记者超过数百人，一起参加了“迎灵仪式”，在现场见证这位旷世巨星的最后一段人生路。邓丽君的侄女，手持姑姑的照片与引魂香，引领邓的亡魂到殡仪馆，一路哭着：“姑姑，你回来了，你到家了！”邓丽君的遗体在第一时间由灵车转送到台北第一殡仪馆。
邓丽君的母亲在听到爱女的噩耗后，一连几天食不下咽、寝不安宁，两眼哭得红肿，神色也见苍白，而且一直沉默不语。而当提到邓丽君遗体要土葬或火葬时，她却相当激动地哭着说：“不要火葬，我女儿辛苦了一辈子，不能就这样把她烧掉。”
邓丽君回家了，可惜已是天人永隔，遗留下来她挚爱的母亲、亲爱的家人，大陆、港台，以至全球华人歌迷只能在她温柔婉约、深情无限的歌声里，去悼念这一代歌后——永远的邓丽君。
5月14日是母亲节，也是邓丽君的“头七”祭日。然而今日的母亲节是邓丽君给母亲的一个难忘的回忆，邓妈妈要为她共度“头七”。
清晨8点，邓妈妈在家人的陪伴下首次出现在爱女的灵堂上，她要陪伴丽君共同参与“头七”的佛法仪式。
仪式在9点半开始，这时邓妈妈与邓丽君的阿姨端坐在灵堂前的侧旁，而邓丽君的哥哥弟弟们都站在灵堂前，由数十位慈济功德会的义工带引下，共同颂读阿弥陀经，后再由义工继续唱出4首佛歌，整个仪式约进行半个小时。
其后邓丽君的长兄长安拿着一封信，在令堂前烧给妹妹，这封信是邓妈妈写给爱女的，表白她对爱女的情切与哀痛，愿女儿早日安息的一番心底话，之后邓丽君的家人在灵堂前拜访12碗斋菜、1饭、1汤共丽君享用。
虽然这是邓妈妈首次到灵堂上“探望”女儿，其表现比预期镇定，不过从邓妈妈木讷的表情中已知她是多么无奈、不忍，加上连日来受丧女之痛的影响身体相当疲乏。
