Chapter 1 foreword

On July 1, 1997, our country resumed the exercise of sovereignty over Hong Kong, and the century-old humiliation of the Chinese nation was about to be wiped out.Hong Kong is about to enter a new historical period.Because of this, the history of Hong Kong has become a topic that many people care about and want to know more about. Since the day Hong Kong was captured by the British colonialists, its rulers have been the Hong Kong British authorities, and the highest representative of power has been the Governor.Inheriting the wishes of the British royal family and the British ruling class, the Governor was loyal to the policies of the British government and colonized Hong Kong. His highest mission was to seize the greatest wealth for the British government. At the same time, it also turned Hong Kong into a forward base for continuing to invade China. The status of the governor is supreme in the local area.In their own country and in the West, they are the leading figures who can't leave their mouths about democracy. In Hong Kong and in the East, they are symbols of aggressive and old-style imperialism. They suppressed the Chinese people with cruel methods and severe punishments, and did not allow resistance, or adopted soft policies to maintain the order of colonial rule according to changes in the situation; at the same time, they also adopted policies to develop the economy and build some infrastructure to create conditions for Hong Kong's prosperity. The development of Hong Kong into an international free port of today's scale and status cannot be realized based on their subjective desires; it is inseparable from their activities to send a huge amount of money from Hong Kong to the United Kingdom to make the British ruling class achieve its wish.As individuals, they are mostly insignificant, and as governors and politicians, that is, as representatives of the ruling class holding power, they should obviously not be ignored.

Books and biographies about Hong Kong's history can be described as overwhelming.Comrade Zhang Lianxing's book expounds the history of Hong Kong over the past century from a brand-new angle and perspective, which is still rare so far. During the 150 years of British occupation of Hong Kong, a total of 28 governors were dispatched. The length of time they have been in office varies, and the surrounding environment is different. Some focus on protecting vested interests, while others actively attack and expand into China.Their personal experiences are different, but they also have a commonality as colonial rule.In the book, according to the order of their tenure, the biography of the governors comprehensively narrates Hong Kong's politics, economy, culture, education, religion, political system, life, laws, customs, and historical anecdotes at different times. Viewed horizontally, it is a series of biographies of characters. Viewed vertically, it is a popular history of Hong Kong, which is unique.

China resumed exercising Hong Kong's sovereignty in accordance with the Sino-British Joint Declaration. After the return of Hong Kong, one country, two systems will be implemented. Two systems, one is capitalism in Hong Kong, and the other is socialism in the Mainland. It concentratedly reflects the real great changes in China in the 150 years since Hong Kong was reduced to British colonial rule and returned to the motherland today. Why was the Qing government forced to cede Hong Kong to Britain? It is because the feudal ruling class is decayed, the country is weak, and it has lost the power to defend the country's territorial sovereignty. The Revolution of 1911 overthrew the rule of the Qing Dynasty. Not only did it not raise the issue of recovering Hong Kong, but it also announced the recognition of various treaties signed by the Qing government with foreign countries from the very beginning. Why?The country is weak and has no strength. After the First World War, China was the victorious country. At the Paris peace conference, the Beiyang government only proposed to take back the leased land of Kowloon, and dared not involve Hong Kong Island, but that was ignored. Why?China fell apart and weakened even more.

The Anti-Japanese War broke out, and the whole Chinese people rose up to fight against Japan, which won the world's admiration.During this period, Chiang Kai-shek also wanted to seize the opportunity to recover Hong Kong, and once stated that if Britain did not agree to return Hong Kong, the Nationalist Government would not sign treaties with it such as amending and abolishing extraterritorial jurisdiction.Especially when Japan surrendered in 1945, Chiang Kai-shek, the supreme commander of the Allied China theater, had every right to send troops to Hong Kong to accept Japan’s surrender.Taking back Hong Kong has come to nothing. Why?Still China has no power. The United Kingdom has spotted it. Chiang Kai-shek has a lot of troops, but he is eager to oppose the Communist Party. Not only will he not use force to recover Hong Kong, on the contrary, he must rely on the support of foreign countries to launch a war against the people at home in order to maintain the dominant position of the big landlords and big bourgeoisie.During the War of Resistance Against Japan, China under the Chiang regime, the so-called "one of the four powers", was in vain. The new China replaces the old China, the old country is reborn, and it is making great strides to embark on the road of revival.Hong Kong was able to recover because today China is on the road to revival.Restoring the exercise of Hong Kong's sovereignty was originally only a matter for the Chinese, or the concern of the United Kingdom. Now it is widely watched in the world, and it seems to be a worldwide event. The vast majority of people warmly praised China for resuming the exercise of Hong Kong's sovereignty. A few people were unhappy and held a grudge, but they couldn't say it out loud. This is by no means accidental, because it is influenced by the current trend of Chinese history. The reason why people want to understand history is that they can draw corresponding knowledge from its evolution.Hong Kong's return can be understood from various aspects, but in the final analysis, I think it is nothing more than a few big words: socialism, reform and opening up.
