Chapter 79 Chapter Twenty-Three To South Africa To Manila

Gandhi 马诃德夫·德赛 1310Words 2018-03-16
After I recovered, I felt that the house in Zierguan was not suitable; it was damp and the light was not good, so I discussed with Mr. Levashankar Jajgwang and decided to rent a bungalow with fresh air in the suburbs of Mumbai.I went to Bandero and Santa Croz to find out, there is a slaughterhouse in Bandero, but we can't choose that place.Katkoba and surrounding places are too far from the sea.We ended up seeing a beautiful bungalow in Santa Croce, which was the best from a sanitary point of view, so we rented it. I bought season tickets on the first-class train from Santa Croce to Chichicute, and I remember feeling proud that I was often the only passenger in the first-class car.

I used to walk to Bandero to catch the express train that went straight to Chichikat. My law practice is booming more than I expected. My South African client used to give me some work and that was enough to cover my expenses. I hadn't got any work in the High Court yet, but I took part in the "debating sessions" that were then often held, though I never dared to go to them.I remember Jamiatrang Nanabai as a brilliant participant.Like other novice lawyers, I went to the High Court not so much to gain knowledge as to enjoy the intoxicating breeze directly from the sea.I found out that I wasn't the only one enjoying this kind of fun.It seems like a fad, so there's nothing to be ashamed of.

I have however begun to make use of the High Court library, and have made many new friends, and I think I will soon be able to find employment in the High Court. And so, while I began to feel that my career was going more or less smoothly, Gokhli kept his eyes on me, busy making his own plans for me.He used to come to my office two or three times a week, often bringing some friends he wanted me to know, and trying to acquaint me with his ways of working. However, it can be said that God always does not allow my own plans to be carried out.In his own way he dispelled some of my plans. Just when I thought I could settle down as I wished, I received an unexpected telegram from South Africa: "Chamberlain is expected to arrive here and return soon." When the money comes, I'll leave immediately. They wired the money in no time, and I closed the office and set out for South Africa.

I figured I'd have to work there for at least a year, so I kept the house, my wife and kids. At that time, I believed that all ambitious young people should go abroad to find a way if they could not find a way in China. So I brought four or five of these young men, one of whom was Moganlal Gandhi. The Gandhi family was and is a large family.I want to find all those who are willing to leave the lost country and dare to go abroad. My father used to take in large groups of people and put them in government jobs.I want them to be freed from this temptation.I could neither, nor would I, find other employment for them; I left them to support themselves.

Yet when my ideals were presented, I managed to persuade these youths to align their ideals with mine, and indeed I achieved my greatest success in mentoring Moganlal Gandhi. But we'll talk about that later. To be separated from my wife and children, to see the family I had just settled unravel, and to go from stability to insecurity—all of this was hard at the time, but I had accustom myself to insecurity.I think it is wrong to expect stability in a world where nothing is certain but God is truth, everything that appears and happens before our eyes and around us is uncertain, temporary of.Yet the supreme God himself represents certainty, and if anyone can see him and follow his guidance, then there is a blessing. The pursuit of that truth is the highest perfection in life.

I arrived in Durban just in time. There are already jobs waiting for me.A date has been fixed for sending a representative to meet Mr. Chamberlain, and I have to draw up a memorandum to be presented to him, and go with the delegation to see him.
