Chapter 31 Liang Qichao died of a medical accident

Liang Qichao's coffin was buried on the hillside to the east of the Reclining Buddha Temple in Beijing's Xiangshan Mountain. According to his wishes during his lifetime, he was buried with Mrs. Li who died five years ago. Sicheng and Huiyin designed a tall tombstone for their father.The tombstone is made of marble, 2.8 meters high and 1.7 meters wide, shaped like a tenon, simple and solemn.The front of the tombstone is engraved: "First test the tomb of Mr. Ren Gongfu and Mrs. Li Tai", and the names of the nine children are engraved on the back of the tombstone.

This is the first work designed by Sicheng and Huiyin after returning to China after studying in the United States. Forty years later, in 1970, Liang Sicheng was admitted to Union Medical College Hospital due to illness. He learned from his attending physician that his father's death was a medical accident. In March 1926, Liang Qichao was admitted to Union Hospital for diagnosis and treatment due to blood in his stool.The diagnosis was that one side of the kidney was necrotic due to tuberculosis, and it was decided to undergo surgical resection.The operation was performed by Liu Ruiheng, the president of Xiehe Hospital.Liu Ruiheng made a mistake in judgment and cut out the healthy kidney, leaving behind the necrotic kidney.This is the direct cause of Liang Qichao's death in his prime.Regarding this major medical accident, Union Medical College Hospital kept it strictly confidential.The person responsible for the accident, Liu Ruiheng, was transferred from the hospital after the incident, and became the political deputy minister of the Ministry of Health.This case was not mentioned until after 1949 when medical teaching taught how to distinguish left and right kidneys from X-rays.

In March, the cold northern land had just begun to thaw, and Huiyin and Sicheng returned to Northeastern University.After the loss of their loved ones, Huiyin and Sicheng were physically and mentally exhausted.Especially Huiyin, the severe pregnancy reaction made her almost unable to eat anything, even if she drank saliva, she would vomit.Sicheng was very worried and advised her to stay in bed.But she said that only when she stands on the podium and faces the students can she forget about her physical discomfort.The students still liked to listen to Mr. Lin's lectures, but they saw that Mr. Lin, who was originally handsome and slender, looked even thinner.

With the arrival of the new semester, Chen Zhi and Cai Fangyin, Sicheng and Huiyin's classmates at the University of Pennsylvania, came to the Department of Architecture of Northeastern University.Their arrival made Huiyin and Sicheng's small family more lively, and also enabled many tasks that were originally planned to be carried out. Several young people launched the brand of "Liang, Chen, Tong, Cai Construction Office" and began to undertake architectural design tasks.Years of theoretical study finally had the possibility of practice, and their personal income also had the opportunity to improve.

Not long after the firm was established, it took on two major assignments.The design of the school building for Jilin University allowed them to display their skills. The administrative building, teaching building and dormitory building with beautiful granite and reinforced concrete were completed on schedule in 1931.Several young people watched the blueprints from their hands turn into a group of buildings standing in the sun, and they were so excited that they repeatedly called "exciting". The design of the Jinzhou Campus of Northern Jiaotong University was ill-fated.They have finalized the design and budget for the project and construction has begun.But soon, the "September 18th" incident broke out and the project was destroyed by war.

As the principal of Northeastern University, Zhang Xueliang didn't know much about the school's teaching affairs, but he paid great attention to the school's image.
