Lin Yutang's Autobiography 林语堂 2710Words 2018-03-16
① This article is a combination of two excerpts from "Recording Fishing in New York". Summer is here, and it reminds me of the joy of fishing overseas.Every summer when I travel, I always inquire about some kind of fishing facility in a certain place first, and arrange it early. Therefore, wherever Switzerland, Austria, and France have traveled, there are memories of fishing. The banks of the Duo Nao River in Vienna, the suburbs of Paris, the scenery of lakes and mountains are all accompanied by fishing, and it is in my eyes. It is an incredible mystery to me that there is nothing in life without fishing. In Taiwan, due to various factors, there is no equipment, so it has not become a trend. In the Danshui River, yachts have disappeared. On Shimen Lake, there are not many men and women with green capes and green hats. I feel deeply regretful. There are no restaurants on the water, and there are very few pedestrians on the Moshang, which is puzzling.Perhaps the government loves the common people and is very caring, and is afraid that we ordinary people will sink into the water, so it is unknown. However, egrets fly in the clouds, and the reflection of the willow embankment, who should be responsible for the crime of living up to the beauty of spring and autumn?Or when the sky is cold and the moon is twilight, when the smog is clear, who will pick up the fleeting moment?Or on a good day and a quiet night, when the moon and stars are sparse, who is to blame for not being able to put the boat in the middle of the boat, rippling the heart, wandering outside the mind, and washing the filth in my chest?Even if the elevated railway is completed, the willow embankment along the way will be neglected, and the painted boats will disappear, which will detract from the beauty of the rivers and mountains.

What makes me most memorable is Lake Bariloche in Argentina. This is a well-known good place to fish trout. It is located in the high mountains. Because the rivers and mountains have changed, these trout have not been able to enter the sea for a long time. They are called Landlocked Salmon and mixed with sturgeon, called Salmentrout.Sturgeons in North America are usually only one or two pounds, and the larger ones are three to five pounds, but here there are sturgeons of one or twenty pounds, and trout of twenty or thirty pounds. The late President Eisenhower also came here to fish, this is what my guide told me.Lake Ballyloja is located on the border between Argentina and Chile. The Andes Mountains in South America have been exhausted so far, so this place, although there are many mountains and mountains, is a resort of lakes and mountains, and the traffic and boats come and go without hindrance. This area is a good place for sturgeon fishing. When you cross the border to the Bali Luozha Lake, it becomes a natural fairyland. There is Llao-Llao restaurant on the lake, which is called the best scenery in the world by the tour guide. Llao-Llao is located on this mountain, just like a hibiscus emerging from the water, front and back, left and right, leaning on the railing to overlook, the blue sky is boundless, and the vast expanse of glazed glass is full of unexploded atmosphere. At the beginning of the morning sun, you can see thousands of hills competing for beauty, full of brilliance.Probably the mountain is not high and the scenery is strange, so it is endless, with layers of green mountains and beautiful peaks, the emerald green of the lake, and the red halo of the sun. There is no such thing as the arrangement of cable car villas in Switzerland, and the floating of speedboats. In between, it becomes a grand dream world of swimming with deer and hogs. What the tourist guide says, it really lives up to the name.Fishing here is mostly done by steamboat trolling, which is called Trolling. The boat sailed slowly, with the line trailing more than a hundred feet behind the boat. The hook is spoon-shaped, rotates with the waves, and flashes to attract the fish's attention, so no bait is needed. My wife and I went in a boat with a fishing rod on the side, and when the fish took the bait, we could see the rod shaking. In this way, the flowing light illuminates the blue sky all the way, and the cold sound hides to find Fangzhou. When the boat passes by, the wild geese are startled and fly down to the depths of the reed. The setting sun shines back, and there are countless reds, looking up to the sky and screaming, resounding through the sky, no longer knowing whether it is the sky or the world.

Sea fishing is different from lake fishing.About 150 miles to the east of Ajing, the place name "Yinhai" (Mardel Plata) is a seaside resort for the people of Ajing to escape from the summer. The sea ten miles from the shore is the area that produces the most fish because it is rich in aquatic food.I was alone, and I hired a steamboat, which was more than two feet long. The boatman asked me if I was afraid of the waves, and I said no.I set off when it was misty and rainy, and there were only me and Zhouzi in the boat. There are no big waves on the sea, but Zhouzi warned me that it is not for fun to come back against the waves. After mooring at the destination, the two of us started fishing. There is no need for a fishing rod, just a bundle of lines by hand. As expected, the hook has not bottomed out, and the rope is pulled abnormally. In this way, you can release and pull as you like, and you are so overwhelmed that you don't even have the time to smoke. In less than half an hour, the deck was full of brocade lins, and there were more than 150 fish, most of which were green hyenas.I say go back.Zhouzi threw a set of raincoats and hats and told me to squat on the bottom of the boat.Since the motor was fully driven, the wind was so strong and the waves were so high that there was no place to hide on the whole ship. This is the most satisfying time I have ever fished in my life.On the shore, I picked up more than two baskets and sent them to the seafood restaurant on the embankment. This is a famous seafood restaurant, called Spadav Becchia, called my wife to have a taste of seafood and prove that fishermen are not all liars. And in this field, you can also see the Argentine group singing, the kind of innocent and joyful lively, which is hard to see in other countries.

In the north of New York and Long Island, and in the south of New Jersey, fishing is very popular and the equipment is good.In the suburbs of Long Island, such as Creat Neck, Liule Neck, and portWashington, there are countless fishing boats in the harbor, and PortWashington is especially where I spend the summer. When you are free, take an iron bucket, touch clams, and fumble with your toes on the beach sand with bare feet. The clam is one or two inches below the sand in the sea, and when it is touched, it is picked up with the big toe and the second toe, and thrown into the bucket.People in the same group, when they heard a bang from fifty or sixty feet away, they knew that their companions had picked up another one, and they had their own fun.So people here often have a feast of grilled clams, called Clam-bake.To the north of Long Island, especially near the ocean, most of the people who go into the sea from here are aiming at cod, because to the north, as far as Marthas Vineyard, Boston is a good place to produce lobster and cod.I also spent a summer in northern Long Island.Crabs come in and out of Zhouzhu with the tide.Standing on the bridge, I saw crabs coming in groups.Only use the long crab net, and you will get it when you enter the water. Therefore, people who live here don't need money to eat crabs.Along the coast, I don't know how many villages go fishing.Place names often add the sound of quolque, which is the native language left by the Indians, referring to the small port in the bay.

The most famous one is Sheepshead Bay near Coney Island. This is a dock where people from all over New York often go fishing. In summer, there are thirty or forty fishing boats, and in winter there are a dozen or so.The captain is eighty or ninety feet long, and has all the equipment. Lunch is always sandwiches, hamburger fried beef, beer, hot coffee, etc. There are fishing rods, hooks and all miscellaneous tools on board.Bait is also arranged by the boat. Most of our fishing men, women and children are laymen. What kind of fish to catch today, what bait to use, the size of the hook, and where the fish come from are all guided by the boatman. Is an expert.Departure at 7 o'clock in the morning, as soon as you arrive at the dock, you can see many sailors standing on the shore to solicit business. The boat travels for about two hours, and usually lands at 4:00 to 5:00 to return home. There are about 40 to 50 people in each boat, each occupying a fishing position, and it is advisable to arrive early. When a big fish was caught, the whole boat was in an uproar, shouting and responding, and it was very lively. The sailors took long hooks and nets to prevent the fish from struggling to get off the hook when they came out of the water.

The best time is between July and August, when the so-called bluefish (Bluefish) appear. This is a fierce fish that preys on other species.Probably when the mackerel appeared, the bluefish followed and came to chase. Therefore, fishing for bluefish means fighting with fish. All fishers dislike fish that come up tame.If there is a left eye fish on the bottom of the sea, as soon as you take the bait, you will pull it up as if nothing happened.Otherwise, the blue fish struggled all the way, and the fish was so powerful that it might take all its strength to submit.Quiet for a while, come to struggle again, or unhook and leave. When you see the surface of the water, the silver light is shining, pull your thread to pull a big circle, the diameter can be one or two feet away. Therefore, the fishing lines of those in the same boat were also disturbed by him.At that time, it was important to catch the fish, wait for the fish to hit the board, and then slowly sort out the clues and sort out the entanglement of the fishing line. When the blue fish was on the board, it was still jumping wildly, struggling to the end, and finally caught it.Especially fishing for bluefish is advisable at night. When the blue fish appeared, there could be a hundred boats mooring in groups on the sea.At night, the moon and stars are rare, and the lights on the sea are shining brightly, which is another scene. When you are resting, or when the fish are not eating bait, even if you lie on the boat and watch the shadow of the mast hanging in the galaxy, whirling and swaying, your mind will be wandering and you will feel as if you are in a fairyland.Suddenly there was a sound in the boat, someone caught a big fish, and the whole boat was in an uproar.Nai got up and made persistent efforts, mustering the spirit to go fishing.

Every Sunday, there are dozens of boats on the sea, and if you look around for three to five miles, there are all fishing boats.Under the dim night, the lights are bright, like another world.I remember one night, it was early September, the blue fish were few, but they were very big.My little girl and I are like fishing at night. We came home at four o'clock in the morning and brought two big fish, one in a cloth bag, more than three feet long, looking like two parasols, which woke up my wife.
