I don't know if the Tibetans at that time would look up at the most sacred Buddha in their hearts.They may just take a look at it, and take all the images shrouded in that halo into their hearts.Even if the image is blurred to just a halo, it is enough.Buddha originally did not approve of using idols to occupy people's hearts.But the light of wisdom is the truth that illuminates the world.As long as you hide the divine light in your heart, you will have the direction to walk in the dark world and the wisdom to distinguish good from evil.
