Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Chinese Studies
Throughout his life, Liang Qichao was often criticized for his changeability, and some even ridiculed him for speculation. Liang Qichao also admitted that his nature was "fluid and changeable", but he was by no means speculative politics as others said. He faced his "fickleness" calmly. In 1903, Liang said in the article "The Theory of Intellectual Reason by the Great Uncle of Political Science": "I am not afraid to challenge my past self with the self of today." Once, Chu Zhongyuan asked Liang Qichao: "Mr. Liang used to protect the emperor, but later he supported the republic. He supported Yuan at the front, and later opposed him. Most people think that Mr. is inconsistent, and students also have doubts. I don't know how Mr. Liang explained this?" After pondering for a while, he said with a smile: "These words are not only criticized by others, but I also criticize myself. I often say: 'I don't hesitate to use today's me to oppose my past'. This is true in politics, and in learning The same is true. But I have a central idea and a consistent view, and I am by no means a speculator who is watching the wind and following the wind."

Liang Qichao said: "Why did I separate from Mr. Nanhai? Why did I cooperate with Sun Yat-sen and oppose him? Why did I support Yuan and oppose Yuan? This is by no means a matter of fighting for power or profit, but my central idea and consistent stand. What is my central idea? It is patriotism. What is my consistent position? It is saving the country....Knowing my sins, I will let future generations judge that I, Liang Qichao, am just such a person.” Liang Qichao’s friend Sun Baoxuan understood Liang Qichao’s fickleness in this way: “There are villains who repeat themselves in the world, and there are gentlemen who repeat themselves. It’s not enough to be a villain if you don’t know repetition, and it’s not enough to be a gentleman if you don’t know repetition. The repetition is also considered to be a change because of the wind and snobbery; the repetition of a gentleman is also considered to be a change because of the accumulation of knowledge. The repetition is the same, and the reason for the repetition is different.”

Zheng Zhenduo expressed his deep understanding of Liang Qichao's "fickleness" in his article "Mr. If he persists unchanged, he will already be outdated, degraded, and belong to the same class as all the old and young; if he remains unchanged, his contribution and achievements to China may be equal to zero. His greatest feature, the greatest What is enough to show his bright and upright personality is his 'fickleness' and his 'repeated change'."
