Feng Youlan recalled in his later years: "In 1920, I went to the Graduate School of Columbia University in the United States as a graduate student. It was rumored among my classmates that there was a strange man Chen Yinke among the Chinese students at Harvard University. I like him, but I haven't seen him." Hong Ye (Wei Lian), a well-known professor at Yenching University, recalled a small incident when he recalled his study abroad life. He said that he saw a Chinese student whose shirt was exposed outside his trousers on the Harvard campus in one summer. He didn’t know who he was. The origin of it is that he is insane. At that time, Americans usually tied the lower part of their shirts inside their belts, shaking their heads and tails in an aristocratic manner, pretending to be chic. But Chen Yinke recited poems as if there was no one else around, didn't pay attention to the strange eyes cast around him, and still went his own way.Seeing that this person was so weird, Hongye asked other students, and replied: "This is the famous Chen Yinke from Harvard." Then he took a breath and looked at him differently.

When Chen Yinke first arrived in Tsinghua, his eldest nephew Chen Fenghuai (son of Hengke) was 26 years old and was studying in Tsinghua University. He was able to meet this uncle who was a tutor often. On Sundays, the uncle and nephew often went to shops and bookstores in the city. Wait around.Due to Chen Yinke's long-term desk work and extreme lack of exercise, his physique is very weak. More than half of his salary is used to buy books and part of it to buy medicines.Mrs. Chen only believes in Western medicine, and often goes to the pharmacy to buy medicines for gastrointestinal and heart diseases from various countries.According to Chen Fenghuai, he once went to a pharmacy in Xidan to buy stomach medicine. “At that time, most of the medicines in the western pharmacy were foreign products. He carefully read the instructions on each bottle and the instructions inside the box, and then he chose one. The clerk thought he was mentally ill, so I quickly explained that 'he understands foreign languages', which made all the people present Immediately cast 'strange' glances at him".

Zhou Fagao, a student studying at the United Nations University, recalled: "Postgraduate students live in two large rooms on the third floor, plus two small rooms, one for Mr. Chen Yinke and one for Mr. Tang Yongtong.  … His (Chen Yinke)'s His temper is really not small, maybe it is due to his poor health! We live with him on the third floor and never talk to each other. Once when he was taking a nap, a guest came to see him, and he kept saying hello Bowing and driving that person downstairs. Another time, Mr. Luo Changpei's room on the second floor was full of graduate students, and there was a lot of noise. It was about ninety o'clock at that time. Next, Mr. Luo was so frightened that he quickly stopped the drums."

After the founding of New China, the government treated Chen Yinke more politely, but his aloof personality remained as before. There was a record in Wu Mi’s diary on August 30, 1961: “Brother Yinke explained that living in Sun Yat-sen University is more comfortable and convenient (life, books), so the government paid special respect to it, and it has nothing to do with Soviet scholars asking questions! Since then, the government has repeatedly urged Brother Yin Ke to enter Beijing without leaving Sun Yat-sen University. He will stick to his own destiny, lie still, never see any visiting guests, especially any foreigners, never talk about politics, never comment on current affairs and policies, and never criticize people. ...never change from the fashion of the times."
