Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Chinese Studies
Chen Yinke is known as the master of masters, the professor of professors, and almost all contemporaries and scholars respect this master extremely. After the outbreak of the Anti-Japanese War, Chen Yinke's family went south to Hong Kong, passing through Wuzhou City, Guangxi. At that time, Guangxi University was located here. President Li Yunhua was originally a professor of Tsinghua University. When he learned that Chen Yinke's family came here, he went to the station to greet him personally and warmly entertained the family for dinner.Because they could not stay here for too long, in the evening, Principal Li and his wife stepped on the lights along the river, and personally sent the Chen family to board the inland river steamer. In the vast night, the steamer went down the river.

Fu Sinian went to Kunming and lived downstairs of Chen Yinke. At that time, the bombing of Kunming by Japanese planes was in full swing. In order to avoid the bombing, Fu Sinian ordered people to dig a large earth pit in front of the building, and covered it with planks to serve as an air-raid shelter.Chen Yinke, who lives on the third floor, made a ridiculous couplet for this purpose: "According to the opportunity, it will be safe to go to the ground." Every time the alarm sounds, everyone rushes to the air-raid shelter, in order to "safe to go to the ground" as soon as possible. .At this time, Chen Yinke, who was physically weak, was not only blind in his right eye, but also had a disease in his left eye. His vision was blurred and his movements were extremely inconvenient.Chen Yinke himself has the habit of sleeping in the morning and taking a nap in the afternoon. Fu Sinian was afraid that Chen Yinke would not hear the alarm, or that he would be in danger due to poor eyesight when the alarm sounded. On the other hand, shaking his obese body, regardless of his extremely severe high blood pressure and heart disease, panting heavily, sweating profusely, he rushed upstairs. When he reached the third floor, he carefully helped Chen Yinke down and sent him to the air-raid shelter .Fu Sinian, who is known as the "big gun" and doesn't look down on anyone, actually respected and cared for Chen Yinke so much, and it was a good story in Kunming academic circles for a while.

After the Southwest Associated University, Chen Yinke was the only one of the four mentors of Tsinghua National Academy who was famous for a while, so he was hailed as the "quintessence of the country" by Liu Wendian.Liu Wendian respected Chen Yinke very much, and dared not make any mistakes. He openly admitted that his knowledge was not as good as Chen's, and said to his students many times: I don't admire Chen's personality knowledge very much, but "120,000 points of admiration." When Chen Yinke was at the Southwest Associated University, one day, Japanese planes launched an air raid and the sirens sounded, and the professors and students of the Associated University scattered around to hide.Liu Wendian ran halfway, and suddenly remembered that Chen Yinke, whom he admired "120,000 points", was weak and his eyesight was failing, so he led a few students back to support Chen and ran out of the city.He insisted not to allow the students to help him, shouting loudly: "It is important to preserve the national quintessence! It is important to preserve the national quintessence!" and asked the students to help Chen go first. At this time, seeing Shen Congwen, a new literature writer whom he had always despised, was also in the crowd, so he ignored his panting, turned around and scolded: "Why are you running? I am running for Zhuangzi. I am going to die. No one will talk about it! Who are you running for?” It is said that Liu Wendian also estimated the salary of the professors around him. Chen Yinke was worth 400 yuan, he was worth 40 yuan, Zhu Ziqing was worth 4 yuan, and Shen Congwen was the lowest, not even worth 40 cents.

When Feng Youlan studied at Harvard in her early years, she admired Chen Yinke. When I was at Southwest Associated University, Feng Youlan, who was the dean of the Liberal Arts School at that time, was already a great philosopher, and he was also regarded as a superior figure in Tsinghua University. But every time in the "History of Chinese Philosophy" class, Feng always respectfully followed Mr. Chen out of the teachers' lounge, and listened to Chen's speech as he walked, until he made a big bow at the door of the classroom, and then left. Chen Yinke studied so hard that his eyes were damaged and he had to be hospitalized. The students took the initiative to form a nursing team to take care of Mrs. Chen in shifts.Chen Yinke was moved, and said to the principal Mei Yibao: "Unexpectedly, your church school will return the teacher's way." Mei Yibao later said: "It is a masterpiece to invite Chen Gong to Chengdu Yenching University, and to be able to win Chen Gong’s one-word evaluation is the highest award for my fifty years of education.”

Chen Yinke returned to Beijing and lived in Tsinghua Garden. When Ji Xianlin knew that the teacher was back, he immediately went to see him.At that time, traveling from Beijing to Tsinghua University took a lot of trouble, just like a short trip.Dozens of miles along the road are all farmland, and in autumn, green gauze tents are set up, and there are really green forest people blocking the road to rob.But Ji Xianlin didn't care.Ji Xianlin knew that Chen Yinke liked the Zhalan red wine brewed by the Catholic foreign priests who lived in Beijing the most, so he went to the current location of the Municipal Party School and the basement of the priests' retreats to buy several times Zhalan red wine, and then traveled long distances to deliver it. When I arrived at Tsinghua Garden and delivered it to Mr. Chen, I felt quite comforted.

When the Pearl Harbor incident broke out in 1941, Chen Yinke, who planned to go to the UK to treat eye diseases and give lectures, was still stranded in Hong Kong. The situation was critical and his life and death were unknown. The last plane sent by the Chongqing government arrived at Hong Kong Airport on December 18 to rescue government officials and academic celebrities trapped in Hong Kong. However, Kong Xiangxi's wife, Song Ailing, and second lady, Kong Lingjun, led dozens of bodyguards to prevent others from boarding the plane, but transported their own servants, foreign dogs, toilets, spices and bed boards onto the plane!Chen Jitang, He Xiangning, Xu Chongzhi, Mao Dun, Guo Moruo, Chen Yinke and others were all stopped from boarding the plane. When the people at the time learned of this incident, the public opinion was in an uproar, and Fu Sinian "raged into a rage, shouting to kill 'Flying Dog Dean' Kong Xiangxi to thank the world".Fortunately, after being rescued by Zhu Jiahua, the dean of the Academia Sinica, Chen Yinke's family, who "nearly died", finally arrived in Guilin and escaped the catastrophe.

When Chen Yinke's family lived in poverty in Hong Kong in 1941, Xian Yuqing, a professor of Lingnan University, asked someone to give them a small subsidy of 40 yuan "military ticket", but Chen declined.Later, after Chen Yinke arrived in Guangzhou, Xian Yuqing was very concerned about the Chen family's dialogue with the school, as well as the daughter's marriage. This added warmth to Chen Yinke's spirit in his later years. During the Spring Festival of 1956, Tang Yuan wrote a Spring Festival couplet written by Chen Yinke and presented it to Xian Yuqing: In the spring breeze, peaches, plums and reds are released, and Xianguan Langgan is replaced with new ones.

Chen Yinke's assistant Huang Xuan is the daughter of Huang Yizhu, the richest overseas Chinese in Indonesia, and the wife of Professor Zhou Shoukai. In 1952, by chance, Huang Xuan was hired by Sun Yat-sen University as Chen Yinke's assistant and teaching assistant.Huang Xuan put a lot of effort into Chen Yinke's writings in his later years. "On Rebirth", "Yuanbai Poems and Papers" and "Liu Rushi's Biography" were all recorded and organized by Huang Xuan.Chen Yinke was very happy to cooperate with him and was very satisfied with his work. He once wrote a special note on the publication of the book to thank him.She has worked beside Chen Yinke for fourteen years.Due to her lover's job transfer, Huang Xuan once wanted to resign.Chen Yinke said: "You have done a good job. After you go, it will not be easy for me to find another suitable teaching assistant. Then I will not be able to work anymore." Huang Xuan was moved and stayed again.Until 1966 was forced to leave.

Chen Yinke's student Jiang Tianshu, who relied on his works behind him, visited his teacher in Guangzhou and talked with him every day, taking notes. One day, when Jiang Tianshu went, Chen Yinke forgot to give up his seat. Jiang just stood aside and talked, not daring to sit down, but Chen Yinke was blind and didn't know. Soon after liberation, Premier Zhou Enlai specially sent someone to visit him to convey the care of the party and the country to him. After his leg was injured, Premier Zhou personally asked the hospital about the treatment plan.Tao Zhu has always given him treatment that mainland intellectuals can hardly expect.During Tao Zhu's tenure as secretary of the Central South Bureau, he was extremely concerned about Chen Yinke's academic studies and work. "Because he was blind and his legs were disabled", three nurses were specially assigned to take care of his life.Since Chen Yinke's remaining eyesight can only distinguish white weakly, a white corridor was specially built in his yard so that the old man would not fall when he took a walk after work. After Chen became a professor at CUHK, his salary was the highest among professors at CUHK and the whole country.Chen Yi, Zhou Yang, Hu Qiaomu and others all respected him very much. When they went to Guangzhou, they all went to visit him and discussed with him academic issues of literature and history!

Chen Yinke was a member of the Faculty.Regarding the election of academic committee members, Zhang Jiafu said: "In this work, the most acute contradiction is Chen Yinke, a historian who studies the history of the Sui, Tang and Five Dynasties. There will also be opinions. If he is elected to the Faculty Committee, he has repeatedly stated that he does not believe in Marxism. We had to ask Chairman Mao for instructions, and Chairman Mao instructed: "We must be elected." In this way, Chen Yinke entered the Faculty of Philosophy and Social Sciences Committee." In 1949, Mao Zedong visited the Soviet Union, and to Mao's surprise, Stalin suddenly asked about Chen Yinke's whereabouts. It turned out that his book "Problems of the Chinese Revolution" quoted many materials in Chen Yinke's works.Mao Zedong promised to search again after returning to China, and later found out that he was at Sun Yat-sen University in Guangzhou, so he asked the Guangdong authorities to treat him well. The Queen of England's visit to China specifically mentioned Chen Yinke, and also went to visit Chen Yinke.Zhou Enlai also took good care of Chen Yinke. Soon after liberation, he sent someone to visit him and convey his concern for him.

In 1962, Hu Qiaomu visited, accompanied by Tao Zhu, "walked to Chen Yinke with the mentality of a student meeting a teacher" (Hu Qiaomu studied in the History Department of Tsinghua University in the 1930s). "Chen Yinke frequently asked questions, but Hu Qiaomu explained as tactfully as possible."For example, when talking about the country's economic situation in recent years, Chen Yinke asked: "Why are there so many mistakes?" Hu Qiaomu replied with a smile: "It's like moving sofas, tables and chairs around in a living room, the purpose is to find a Good location, so it is inevitable to make mistakes in moving around, just like experiencing an earthquake." When Chen Yinke asked why his book could not be published for a long time, "Hu Qiaomu answered Chen Yinke's eight words in eight words. Ask a question in one word: Chen said, "There is a period for the coffin to be built, but there is no date for publication"; Hu replied, "There is a period for publication, but the coffin is still far away."Because of Hu Qiaomu's and Tao Zhu's visits, Chen Yinke wrote "Seven days after the eve of the Renyin Yuan Dynasty, the two guests had a conversation, and because they felt something, they reappeared before Dongpo's rhyme". The east wind is safe every month and every year.” Tao Zhu took great care of Chen Yinke: he took care of Sun Yat-sen University to "take off his hat and crown" Chen Yinke, who was "center-right" at that time; in order to facilitate Chen Yinke's walk, he arranged for a white cement road to be built in front of his house; when Chen was seriously ill, he was given three Half nurse; in order for Chen Yinke to appreciate opera, he instructed Sun Yat-sen University to get a good radio for him. At that time, the school did not take it seriously, and Tao Zhu was very angry, saying, "The school didn't send it to me."He gave Chen Yinke a floor-standing record player. After Tao Zhu was overthrown, the "rebel faction" once counted that from June to December 1966, Tao Zhu, who was far away in Beijing, gave "remote control instructions" to the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee by telephone 38 times. Chen Yinke's treatment should remain the same." After the start of the Cultural Revolution, although Tao Zhute, the then vice premier of the State Council, instructed the Guangdong Provincial Party Committee to treat Yinke well, the Red Guards ignored it and instead forced Yinke to explain his relationship with Tao Zhu, hoping to take advantage of this to overthrow Tao Zhu.At that time, Chen was already "weak, sick, blind, and crippled." The Red Guards occupied the office building opposite Chen's house, shouted slogans at Chen's house with loudspeakers all day long, and even froze the wages of Yinke and his wife. .What's even more hateful is that they also used force to drive away Chen's assistant Huang Xuan and the three nurses sent to Chen by Tao Zhu. They posted posters all over the house, looted items and tore up manuscripts. ", for a while the house was empty.Chen refused to give in, they thought of taking him to the auditorium to criticize, but Mrs. Chen stopped him and was seriously injured. When Liu Jie was the head of the History Department of Sun Yat-sen University, he would go to the home of his teacher Chen Yinke every Spring Festival to kowtow and salute. At the beginning of the "Cultural Revolution", when the students wanted to fight against Chen Yinke, Liu Jie stopped him and shouted: "I am his student, the poison in him is also in me, just fight me! Don't fight him!" Liu Jie then volunteered to be criticized on behalf of Yinke. The Red Guards asked Liu what he thought, and Liu replied, "It is an honor in my life to be criticized for my mentor." Soon after Tao Zhu was criticized, the Red Guards asked him why he sheltered Yinke, and Tao Zhengse replied, "If you have Chen Yinke's level, I treat you the same way." After the start of the Cultural Revolution, everyone criticized Chen Yinke, but Ji Xianlin was unwilling to act against his will and make trouble. Although he was repeatedly mobilized and showed righteousness, he still kept his mouth shut like the Jinren.Ji Xianlin recalled in his later years: "I don't want to be thick-skinned and act as Zhuge Liang after the fact. My understanding at the time was also very vague. However, I did not take action after all. Now that time has passed, after forty years, I think that I have not betrayed my conscience. It’s comforting to be able to be worthy of the spirit of the teacher in heaven.”
