Qian Mu did not graduate from high school, but he has been devoting himself to historical research, and everyone in the academic circle highly respects him. From 1912, in ten and a half years, Qian Mu went to four primary schools, completed his first academic work "Lunyu Wenjie" in his spare time, and published articles in newspapers and periodicals one after another, gradually emerging.Qian Jibo (Qian Zhongshu's father), who was a professor at St. John's University in Shanghai at the time, read an article by Qian Mu and greatly appreciated it.In 1923, under the recommendation of Qian Jibo, Qian Mu transferred to his part-time Wuxi Provincial Third Normal School to teach. Since then, the two have formed a deep friendship.Qian Mu never forgot his friendship with Qian Jibo. In his later years, he recalled: "There are more than a hundred colleagues, and the most respectful person is the most respected person. Ziquan is the most respected person. The friendship in life, the diligence in learning, and the kindness to others are also the first choice for Ziquan."

When he was in the Third Division of Wuxi, Qian Mu had completed "Introduction to Chinese Studies" and began to write his masterpiece "The Years of the Pre-Qin Philosophers".By chance, Meng Wentong, a famous scholar, read his article and came to visit him. He opened the manuscript of "Xinian" and was attracted. He couldn't wait to read it on the car back to Nanjing. Since Qianjia, there have been few horses." Chen Yinke praised Qian Mu's "The Years of the Pre-Qin Philosophers" more than once.Chen Yinke called "The Years of the Pre-Qin Philosophers" "extremely exquisite", "since Wang Jing'an (Guowei) has not seen such a work".Chen Yinke compared Qian Muzhi's work with his most respected Wang Guowei's, which shows Chen's appreciation for this book.

Chen Yinke once expressed his praise for the book "The Years of the Pre-Qin Philosophers" on many occasions. As recorded by Zhu Ziqing, Chen Yinke "discussed the draft of Qian Binsi's "Zhu Zi Nian"" at Ye Gongchao's dinner in April 1933. Many. The most important one explains that "Historical Records·Six Kingdoms Table" is not credible according to "Qin Ji". However, the date of "Historical Records" is often wrong. The theory of vertical and horizontal is thought to be later than that recorded in "Historical Records". The facts prove it."

On May 16, 1934, Yang Shuda attended the oral examination meeting of Yao Weiyuan, a graduate student of the History Department of Tsinghua University. After the meeting, Chen Yinke told Yang that "Qian Binsi (Mu)'s "Zhu Zi Nian" is extremely superb. The era is based on the "Chronicle" and the mistakes of "Historical Records". Chen Yinke also affirmed Qian Mu's "Outline of National History·Introduction".Qian Mu’s "Miscellaneous Memories of Teachers and Friends" records that in March 1939, Zhang Xiaofeng, who participated in the review meeting of the Academia Sinica, visited Qian Mu who was living in Yiliang at that time after the meeting, and told Chen Yinke's praise of "Outline of National History·Introduction": Zhang Qixun Xiaofeng Came to Kunming to attend the Council of Academia Sinica, and met with Chen Yinke.Yin Ke told him that there was a big article in the newspaper recently, you must read it.Xiaofeng asked, what's the problem.Nai said, Qian Mou's "National History Outline" introduction. After the meeting, Xiaofeng stayed in Yiliang overnight in the mountains and told Yu Yinke what he had said.

Gu Jiegang praised "The Years of the Pre-Qin Philosophers" as "very concise and the first work on the history of the Warring States since the Republic of China".At that time, Gu Jiegang, who was one year older than Qian Mu, was already a well-known figure in Chinese academic circles. Although he had never met Qian Mu, after reading the manuscript of "Si Nian", he praised his historical knowledge and talent, and said: "You seem inappropriate. I grew up teaching Chinese in middle schools, so I should teach history in universities." At that time, Qian Mu and Gu Jiegang were far apart in terms of academic status, and their research methods and academic viewpoints were not in agreement, but Gu still cared for Qian very much. After Qian Mu resigned from Yenching University, Gu Jiegang wrote to Hu Shi on March 18, 1931, strongly recommending Qian Mu to teach at Peking University instead of him.The letter said: "... I think that if he comes to Peking University, I will not come, because he can teach all the lessons I can teach, and he is more serious than me in learning. Although our directions are somewhat different, I respect him. He, I hope he will always make up for my shortcomings and remedy my shortcomings. Therefore, if Peking University invites him, it is better to invite me... His "Zhizi Nian" has been completed, with 300,000 words. It is a major work in recent years. I will ask him to read it in a few days." Hu Shi was always good at supporting the young, and also appreciated Qian Mu's knowledge, so Qian Mu went to teach at Peking University, which he had longed for.

Hu Shi appreciated Qian Mu very much, saying that Qian's "Chronology of Liu Xiangxin and His Son" was "a great work with good insights and style".Qian Mu was teaching ancient Chinese history (pre-Qin history) in the Department of History of Peking University. Someone asked Hu Shi about the pre-Qin scholars.Hu Shi also lent Qian Yanlan his "solitary copy" "Qiu Ren Lu". When Qian Mu first arrived in Peiping, Fu Sinian, Hu Shi's disciple, treated him with great courtesy and invited him to the Institute of History and Philology, where he was honored as a guest of honour.

During Hu Shi's lifetime, Qian Mu failed to become an academician of Academia Sinica.Later, Li Ao thought this was unfair. He said: "Qian Mu's eccentric theory of Neo-Confucianism is not enough, but his simple achievements in classics should be selected as an academician first."
