In 1903, Liu Shipei met Chen Duxiu in Shanghai, and the two successively participated in the founding of "National Daily" and "Jingzhong Daily".Liu Shipei was wanted and fled to Shanghai because he was frustrated in the examination room and insulted the imperial examination.Chen Duxiu was wanted by Duanfang and fled to Shanghai because of his patriotic speech in Anqing Library.Because they had the same experience as "the same people who have fallen in the end of the world", and also had strong anti-Manchu sentiments, the two had a close relationship, and they often met to talk about their ambitions.

In the winter of 1903, Chen Duxiu returned to Wuhu and founded "Anhui Common Talk News".Before leaving, Chen Duxiu sent Zhang Shizhao and Liu Shipei a poem saying: "King Qin's revolution is all traces, and if there is a rebellion, my heart will not cry. The ruler does not leave behind the hatred, and it is in vain to find the disciples and bend the body. Drive into the thorny ground, looking forward to it. A flock of sheep and hogs. The man stands with only one sword, and does not know the success or failure." Signed "Chen Youji".Liu Shipei was deeply moved, and wrote the title of the poem: "Do as you please, as you wish, as you wish."

After returning to Anhui, Chen and Liu exchanged letters frequently.Chen Duxiu sent "Common sayings" to Liu Shipei on time. After Chen Duxiu's friend He Meishi died of illness, Chen Duxiu wrote the poem "Crying for He Meishi", and Liu Shipei will publish it in "Alarm Bell Daily".Later, Liu asked Chen for a draft, and Chen Duxiu wrote "He Meishijue, the dead friend of Yemeng, wrote this".Liu Shipei collected Chen Duxiu's draft of this article, and joked under the manuscript: "You can't help yourself? You can't help yourself, you can't help yourself, you can't help yourself, you can't help yourself!"

Liu Shipei joined Cai Yuanpei and others to organize the "National Education Assassination Group" (the predecessor of the Restoration Society), and together with Zhang Shizhao recommended Chen Duxiu, a "Jianghuai scholar" to Cai Yuanpei.Zhang Shizhao's reason for recommending Chen is: "This gentleman is ambitious, has a fighting spirit that is not too steep, and has a very beautiful personality, loyal to people, loyal to things, and has the style of a chivalrous man." Liu Shipei said: "Chen Jun He is also the author of my newspaper. He values friendship and trustworthiness. He founded and distributed a vernacular newspaper in Wuhu. Several people who initiated it dispersed due to hardship and danger. He is still working alone and has supported it for several months. .”

Chen Duxiu and Bai Wenwei, a physical education teacher of Wanjiang Middle School, set up an assassination organization in Wuhu. After the "Alarm Bell Daily" was seized, Chen Duxiu invited Liu Shipei to teach in Wanjiang Middle School.Soon, Liu Shipei went to Wuhu under the pseudonym "Jin Shaofu".After Liu Shipei came, he often regarded himself as the imperial envoy of the Restoration Society, and Chen Duxiu refused to admit that the organization in Wuhu and the organization in Shanghai were in the relationship between subordinates and superiors, so Liu and Chen had quarrels.

In 1907, Liu Shipei and Chen Duxiu went east to Japan successively. When they were in Japan, Liu Shipei and Zhang Taiyan tried to win over Chen Duxiu and Su Manshu in order to "scramble to seize the power of cadres".But Chen Duxiu believed that "Guang Han" was a narrow nationalism and refused to participate in it. Later Liu Shipei took refuge in Duanfang, Duanfang was killed in Sichuan, and Liu Shipei was arrested and imprisoned. At the beginning of 1912, after learning of Liu Shipei's whereabouts, Chen Duxiu wrote to Sun Yat-sen to protect Liu Guanghan. In the letter to Sun, Chen Duxiu counted Liu's merits and virtues, and excused him by "nervousness".

In 1917, Chen Duxiu was invited by Cai Yuanpei to be the dean of liberal arts at Peking University. At this time, Liu Shipei was weak and struggling to earn a living. He told Cai and Chen that he wanted to teach at Peking University.Regardless of previous suspicions, Chen Duxiu and Cai Yuanpei hired Liu Shipei as a professor at Peking University. In 1918, when the New Culture Movement was flourishing, Liu Shipei was obsessed with old learning. He gathered a group of conservative teachers and students from Peking University and founded the magazine "Guogu" to confront Chen Duxiu's "New Youth".

On June 11, 1919, Chen Duxiu was arrested. The next day, accompanied by his wife He Zhen, Liu Shipei, who was seriously ill, supported his body, and jointly signed a letter with old and new scholars from Peking University, requesting the release of Chen Duxiu on bail. On September 16, Chen Duxiu was released from prison.Liu Shipei, who was bedridden, wanted to go to greet him, but finally gave up because of his powerlessness. More than a month after Chen Duxiu was released from prison, Liu Shipei's condition worsened, and Chen went to visit him many times. On November 10, Liu Shipei, who was only 36 years old, died of illness. Chen Duxiu presided over Liu's funeral, and quoted Kang Youwei's poem to mourn his deceased friend: "I have traveled all the winding paths and dangerous bridges, and I still sing when I come out."
