Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Chinese Studies
Huang Kan and Zhang Taiyan met in Japan. At that time, Huang Kan lived upstairs and Zhang Taiyan lived downstairs. One night, due to internal urgency, Huang didn't have time to go to the toilet, so he untied his trousers from the window of the building and vomited.Zhang Taiyan was in the midst of his night reading at this time, when suddenly a stream of smelly urine splashed down like a waterfall, and he couldn't help cursing loudly.Huang Kan was originally a noble son, and he was young, hot-tempered and domineering, so he also scolded back.No scolding, no acquaintance. After the two parties exchanged names, they both knew each other's name, so they turned the conversation to knowledge, and the more they talked, the more speculative they became.Zhang Taiyan is a master of Pu Xue who is profound and unparalleled, and Huang Kan called him his disciple.Since then, Huang Kan has studied under Zhang Taiyan for many years.Zhang Taiyan is aloof and arrogant, and rarely praises modern literati, but treats Huang Kan with admiration.

There is another version of the acquaintance between Huang Kan and his master Zhang Taiyan. Once Huang Kan followed the crowd to visit Zhang Taiyan's residence, and saw Zhang wrote four words of Dai Liang of the Eastern Han Dynasty in large characters on the wall: "If I am from Donglu, if Zhongni came out of Donglu, Dayu Chang Xiqiang is the only one in the world, who will be his partner?" Huang felt that Zhang was too crazy, fearing that it would be difficult to get close to him, so he wanted to quit. The next chapter saw Huang's article in the newspaper, and he was shocked as a genius. He sent a letter to make an appointment, and the two got acquainted.

Huang Kan and Zhang Taiyan have lived in Tokyo for more than three years, studying hard and asking Zhang for advice from time to time. The funny thing is that he has been with Zhang for a long time, and he has never had the form of "apprenticeship". Zhang is very surprised. When Huang Kan decided to return to China and asked Zhang for his farewell words, Mr. Taiyan said: "You should ask a good teacher to teach you often." He asked who is good, Taiyan said: "Beijing, please find Uncle Liu Shen (Liu Shipei). He replied: "I don't want to go to Beijing for the time being." Taiyan said: "Just talk about Sun Yirang." He replied: "I don't want to go to Zhejiang." Taiyan said: "Chen Botao is in Nanjing, you can go to him." Answer: "I'm afraid I won't be able to go to Nanjing." Tai Yan said, "Then what should I do? As a last resort, I should force myself!" Only then did Huang Kan seriously kowtow, as if he had paid homage to his teacher.Since then, Huang Kan has been in Zhang Taiyan's family. Zhang Taiyan also appreciated Huang's knowledge very much.

Zhang Taiyan once nicknamed several students one by one: Huang Kan (Ji Gang) of Qichun is the king of heaven, Wang Dong (Xuchu) of Wu County is the king of the east, Zhu Xizu (Ti Xian) of Haiyan is the king of the west, and Qianxia (Zhongji) of Gui'an is the king of the west. ) (that is, Qian Xuantong) is the Southern King, and Wu Chengshi (Jianzhai) of Shexian County is the Northern King, collectively known as the "Five Heavenly Kings".The world also called Huang Kan and Wang Dong the "two wonderful chapters".Among several heavenly kings, Huang Kan is the most favored by the Zhang family. Zhang said that his "clear learning and Anya Ci are rare in the world..."

When Zhang Taiyan's "New Dialect" was published, he did not invite his peers, but asked Huang Kan to write "The Postscript" for him, which also shows that he valued Huang. Although Huang Kan thinks highly of himself and has no one in his eyes, he is very respectful to his teacher Zhang Taiyan. This pair of teachers and students cherished each other and left many anecdotes. "Mr. Huang Jigang, a former professor of CUHK, is the most proud disciple of the Zhang family. Mr. Ji Gang is more respectful and respectful to the Zhang family than others. Huang has a disciple, Chen Jun, who can also pass on his mantle. The master Zhang's family is a teacher, and the Zhang family is a teacher. Wait for it. Every new year, Mr. Ji Gang will go to Zhang’s house to congratulate him, and he must kneel down to salute. Respect his teacher, such a cycle is endless, and it is a joke in the family."

Huang Kan was very respectful to his mentor Zhang Taiyan, and Wang Pijiang said that he "has always been very careful in his disciples' etiquette for more than 20 years." "'Mr. Yu Bingshi's elders often ridicule', but Mr. Taiyan always obeys him. If you discuss Mr. Zhang, Mr. Zhang is full of enthusiasm, just like the old way." Zhang Taiyan also called him "although the nature is good. It is different, it is to learn and follow the teacher's method, and dare not lose size."Huang Kan usually likes to write poems, and often asks chapters to be reviewed. Huang Kan especially cherishes the writing and paper of chapters.Zhang knew that Huang had this hobby, and sometimes he wrote a few pictures and poems specially for Huang. Every time Huang got something, he felt like a treasure. On January 12, 1929, Zhang Taiyan's 60th birthday.Zhang lived in Shanghai at that time, and to congratulate the teacher on his birthday, Huang Kan specially rushed to Shanghai a few days in advance to make preparations, which shows his sincerity.

Huang Kan often compares his teacher Zhang Taiyan to Socrates and himself to Plato, because he thinks that the teacher's knowledge is broad and loose, but he can sort it out; Capable things, just like Plato cares about Wumart.Later, Zhang Taiyan asked Huang Kan, "Where is the most beautiful part of a woman?" Huang Kan said, "What do you think, teacher?" Zhang Taiyan said, "From my point of view, the beauty of a woman lies in her eyes." Huang Kan laughed Said: "It is said that Mr. is crazy, from this point of view, how is Mr. crazy!" From then on, Huang Kan's view of Zhang Taiyan changed.

Huang Kan died of illness in the early years of his life. Zhang Taiyan was so sad that he personally wrote the epitaph for his disciples, saying that he "especially finely cured the ancient rhyme". He started from Yu Wen, and later he was a family law, but he refused to write books lightly. Yu Shu said: "People write books lightly. , reckless. Zi focuses on writing books, but is stingy. Reckless is not wise, and stingy.' Answer: "When you are fifty years old, you are on paper and pen." Huang Kan scolded almost all his peers at Peking University, even his junior brother Qian Xuantong, but there was only one person he treated with courtesy, and that person was Liu Shipei, a master of Chinese studies who was as famous as Zhang Taiyan.Someone asked Huang Kan why he gave Liu Shipei special treatment? He replied: "Because he has a deep friendship with Mr. Taiyan, my master."

Zhang Taiyan, Liu Shipei, and Huang Kan often discussed knowledge together, but whenever they talked about Confucian classics, as long as Huang Kan was present, Liu Shipei would keep silent, and Huang Kan quickly guessed the other party's mind.Once, Shipei Liu lamented that he did not have a disciple with outstanding qualifications to be a successor, Huang Kan asked loudly, "How about I come to be your closed disciple?" Liu Shipei thought Huang Kan was just joking, so he said: "You have a famous teacher. How can you be subjugated?" Huang Kan said straightly: "As long as you don't think I have insulted the family wall, I will perform the disciple ceremony." The next day, Huang Kan sealed ten oceans with red paper, and went to Liu's house to kowtow. Liu Shipei accepted the ceremony without hesitation. He said: "I will not be humble today." Some people think that Huang's knowledge is superior to Liu's, and Huang does not have to underestimate his status. Huang said: ""Three Rites" is learned by Liu's family Otherwise, we cannot inherit the unique learning, this is the so-called existence of the Tao and the existence of the teacher."

When Liu Shipei and Huang Kan met in Beijing in 1916, Liu showed Huang Kan his research work on "Zuo Zhuan". talents are especially admired.Once his nephew Huang Zhuo asked Huang Kan, which one read more, Liu Shipei or Zhang Taiyan, Huang Kan said displeased: "How do you know? Mr. Liu's knowledge is unparalleled in the world. His strong memory surpasses others." For a while, Liu Shipei was unemployed at home. Huang Kan recommended him to Cai Yuanpei to teach at Peking University. Cai thought he had been attached to Yuan Shikai and refused to hire him, but Huang Kan insisted: "The school hires him to give lectures, not to discuss politics. There is no suspicion or suspicion. ?” Eventually Cai accepted Huang’s advice and hired Liu.

Before Liu Shipei died, he said to Huang Kan: "I should study learning and not politics in my life. It is only because of a mistake in my early years that I missed the virtue of my ancestors. Now it is too late to regret." The year after Liu Shipei's death, Huang Kan wrote a In the eulogy "The First Master Liu Jun Xiaoxiang's Memorial Essay", there is a sentence in it: "It's a sad boy, I can't face the wall, I turn over the slips with my hands, and I burst into tears". At that time, Huang and Liu had almost the same reputation, and Liu was only two years older. Many people were puzzled by Huang's worship of Liu as his teacher.Even Zhang Taiyan didn't take it seriously: "Jigang's primary school diction is almost better than Shen Shu (namely Liu Shipei), why did you change from the north?" Huang replied: "Most people get Mr. Liu from the classics." This also shows that Huang Kan studious spirit.
