Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Chinese Studies
In 1919, Hu Shi returned to China after studying abroad, taught at Peking University, launched the New Culture Movement, and gained great fame. With Hu Shi's birth, Fu Sinian, Huang Kan's most proud and high-spirited student, soon fell into the camp of new literature. It is said that every time Huang Kan attends class, he always scolds Hu Shi first before giving a formal lecture. Huang Kan sneered at Hu Shi whenever he had the chance.Once, Huang Kan scolded Hu Shi face to face: "You keep saying that you want to promote vernacular Chinese, but you may not be sincere?"Huang said: "If you practice yourselves, your name should not be Hu Shi, but 'Where are you going'." Hu Shi was very embarrassed.

Once again, when Huang Kan gave lectures to his students, he talked about Hu Shi and vernacular Chinese. He said: "Whether vernacular Chinese or classical Chinese is better or worse, it doesn't take too much ink. For example, when Hu Shi's wife died, his family sent a telegram to inform Hu himself. I have to write 'Your wife is dead, come back quickly' in 11 characters, and the telegraph fee is twice as expensive as that in classical Chinese." The audience burst into laughter. At that time, there was a restaurant in Shanghai called "Sierlou". In order to attract business, it once advertised it in newspapers and periodicals. Some students read the building name of "Si Er" and couldn't understand its meaning, so they went to ask the famous Professor Hu Shi for advice.Hu Shi couldn't figure out the original intention of the landlord for a while, so he didn't dare to answer rashly. When Huang Kan heard about it, he laughed and said to the students in class: Haven't you read this Hu Shizhi? The book says, "One becomes ten, ten becomes a hundred, a hundred becomes a thousand, and a thousand becomes tens of thousands." The landlord is probably asking for a sign of a wealth of money.

Huang Kan once gave lectures at Peking University with Hu Shi.Peking opera star Tan Xinpei is popular in Beijing, and there are many good ones in every university. One day, during recess at Peking University, the teachers were gossiping about Tan Xinpei’s "Qin Qiong Selling Horses". Hu Shi interjected: "Peking opera is too outdated. A whip is considered a horse, and two flags are considered a car. You should use a real car and a real horse." That's right!" The audience listened quietly to Gao Lun, but no one made a sound. But Huang Kan stood up and said: "It's suitable, it's suitable, what should I do if I sing Wu Song Fighting Tiger?"

At another banquet, when Hu Shi talked about Mohism, Huang Kan was very dissatisfied. He jumped up and said, "People who talk about Mohism are all bastards!" Hu Shi was embarrassed.Huang went on to say: "It is Shizhi's old man, and he is also a bastard!" Hu Shi was about to explode, but Huang laughed and said: "I am just trying you. Mozi loves both, and he has no father. You have Father, why is it enough to talk about Mozi? I'm not scolding you, just talking about it." The audience burst out laughing. Hu Shi's "Outline of the History of Chinese Philosophy" is only the first half, and the whole book has not been completed for a long time.Huang Kan once said in a class at Central University: "In the past, Xie Lingyun was the secretary supervisor, but today Hu Shi can be regarded as the supervisor of works." The students were puzzled and asked why?Huang Kan said: "The eunuch is the eunuch. The eunuch is gone." The students laughed endlessly.

Huang Kan scolded Hu Shi in class at Peking University, saying: "Hu Shizhi said that writing vernacular is a pleasure, and there are happy things in the world. Jin Shengtan said that the most painful thing in the world is beheading, the fastest thing in the world. There is nothing better than drinking. If Hu Shizhi wants to be happy, he can go to drink and then raise his neck to be chopped off." After the May 4th Movement, Cai Yuanpei often left school, and most of the school affairs were entrusted to Hu Shi.In foreign activities, Cai also often asked Hu Shi to be his or Peking University's representative, "on behalf of Mr. Cai as the chairman" and "on behalf of Mr. Cai as the master".This made the conservatives who opposed Hu Shi very dissatisfied.Lin Shu called Hu Shi the "Second Emperor of Qin" who "left and right the principal".Huang Kan even ridiculed Hu Wei as a "yellow butterfly" flying up and down. The reason is that Hu Shi once wrote a small vernacular poem titled: "Two yellow butterflies, both fly to the sky. I don't know why, one flies back. The other one is lonely and pitiful. I have no intention of going to the sky, the sky is too lonely. "

Zhou Zuoren said that Huang Kan's method of attacking dissidents is completely using verbal abuse, which is cursing in the classroom.Huang Kan and Qian Xuantong both worked under Zhang Taiyan's family, but Huang Kan always despised Qian Xuantong and often called Qian Xuantong "Qian Er lunatic". In 1926, Qian Xuantong asked for leave due to his wife's illness, and temporarily asked Huang Kan to be a professor in the Chinese Department of Normal University. At that time, the dean of the department was Wu Chengshi. Later, Wu and Huang had quarrels over trivial matters. Huang wrote a satirical poem, which included the sentence "Fanghu united with the Shu Party, and Zhejiang sent Qian Crazy", which angered Qian Xuantong for no reason.

It is said that once Huang Kan and Qian Xuantong met at Zhang Taiyan's residence, and they waited for Zhang Taiyan to come out in the living room with others.Huang Kan suddenly shouted: "Second crazy!" Qian Xuantong always respected Huang Kan, but he was already displeased to be teased by Huang Kan in public.Huang Kan continued: "Er mad! You come before! I'll sue you! You are pitiful! Sir, you are here too. Why don't you read the books on phonology carefully recently? What phonetic alphabets and vernacular Chinese are you going to get..." Qian Xuantong couldn't bear it anymore, and sternly said: "I just want to get phonetic characters! I want to get vernacular Chinese! You bastard!" The two started a big quarrel, and Zhang Taiyan hurried out when he heard the sound, and after some mediation, the two finally gave up.

Regarding this matter, Qian Xuantong later wrote in the article: "It has been twenty-six years since I have made friends with Ji Gang. I usually violate my promises because of my temperament... In the spring of the 21st year , I disagreed with each other in Yuhang's seat, and it went to the mouth of a fight." Huang Kan opposed the vernacular, so he scolded Hu Shi, Shen Yinmo and Qian Xuantong.Huang Kan scolded Qian Xuantong especially harshly. He opened the door and yelled at Qian Xuantong, Zhang’s classmate who was in class opposite him. When he was away from his seat, he stole his notes, but Qian didn't care about it, didn't respond, and closed the door.

There is another version of Huang Kan scolding Qian Xuantong for stealing his knowledge: Huang Kan said that he discovered it overnight and earned Qian Xuantong his whole life.He said that he spent a night in Shanghai and discovered twenty-eight ancient sounds, and the characters taught by Qian at Peking University were what he discovered overnight. After Huang Kan's death, "Li Bao" once published an article "Huang Kan's legacy", in which there is a passage: "Huang is famous in China for his national studies, and he is also famous for his cursing people. All scholars in the world except Mr. Zhang Taiyan are not in his eyes." Famous professor Mr. Qian Xuantong and Huang’s fellow teacher Zhang Shi both teach in the Chinese Department of Peking University, and Huang also despises money the most. He said to the students in class, do you know where a certain volume of philology lectures by Qian came from? ?The cover was obtained by urinating Yu Yu. When Qian and Yu lived in Tokyo that day, the times passed. One day after another, Yu left the room because of urinating. When he returned, a book of notes was missing. The remaining materials must be carried with money. Go. Inquire about Qian’s disapproval. Today’s handouts are completely written in Yu’s notes, can you still rely on them? It’s Yu’s urine, which was created by Qian. This language is well-known by the Chinese Department of Peking University, and it can be said to be extremely cruel .”

Zhou Zuoren once sent this article to Qian Xuantong, and Qian Fuxin said: "The anecdote of Pi Weng (according to Huang Kan's alias in the same school as the Shawl Gong) is quite interesting, and I also think it is not fake, although some It doesn’t quite match, there must be a reason. For example, he said that the book was made by stealing his notes while he was urinating. I know he said that I got it by worshiping his door. Pretty much the same thing.” As for Huang Kan scolding Qian Xuantong in class, Mr. Wang Kuncang, a Peking University student at that time, recorded in his memoir article: There were two teachers who taught philology, one was the new school Qian Xuantong, and the other was the old school teacher. Huang Kan.I chose Qian Xuantong's class. One day, I was listening to Teacher Qian's lecture in class, and unexpectedly, Huang Kan, who was teaching in the opposite classroom, scolded Qian Xuantong loudly.Qian didn't care about it, and continued to give lectures.Later, I listened to both Qian Xuantong's lecture and Huang Kan's lecture for comparison.

However, Huang Kan and Lu Xun, two people with completely opposite cultural views, get along well.Huang Kan, Lu Xun, and Liang Qichao once jointly compiled a minimum bibliography of Chinese studies; Huang Kan once said that among the May Fourth New Literature writers, Lu Xun's works can best see the foundation and pattern of Chinese character culture.Lu Xun also once praised Huang Kan's knowledge.
