Hu Shi believes that "tolerance" is the first essence of liberalism. Hu Shi once said to young friends: "Now someone is telling you: 'Sacrifice your personal freedom to seek the freedom of the country!' I tell you: 'Striving for your personal freedom is fighting for the freedom of the country! Fighting for your freedom One's own personality is to fight for the country's personality! A free and equal country cannot be built by a group of slaves!'” During the "May 4th" Movement, students became more and more radical. Hu Shi and Jiang Menglin jointly published "Our Hope for Students". Abandoning your studies, wasting your time, and interfering in corrections is the most uneconomical thing in the world!"

Hu Shi said: "China needs to heal poverty, ignorance, corruption, disease, disturbance, not revolution..." In the 1920s, Hu Shi once said to his friend Louise Gannett: "It is unfortunate for talented people to be born in China today. They get too much too easily; they are pushed very hard. Quickly take on more responsibility than they can handle—they're doomed." After Hu Shi took charge of China Public School, the school ethos was completely new.He opposed party-oriented education. The Kuomintang government stipulated that all government agencies and schools should hang the Kuomintang party flag, and the commemoration week of Prime Minister Sun Yat-sen should be held every Monday.Only Hu Shi's Chinese Public School does not fly the party flag and does not hold the Prime Minister's Memorial Week. His student Luo Ergang said that after entering a Chinese public school, the first thing that made him happy was that the school did not hang the Kuomintang flag and that the Kuomintang Memorial Week was not held on Monday mornings.

In 1929, Hu Shi gave a sentence to the 18th grade graduates of Chinese public schools: "Don't abandon knowledge." He said, "Study is a tool for casting. If you abandon knowledge, you will destroy yourself." During the December 9th Movement in 1935, Hu Shi was opposed to the actions of the students. He insisted that the students should first "cast themselves into tools", so he did not hesitate to expose those enthusiastic "announcements".So some students wrote to him: "Mr. Hu, we deeply understand your personality! Your personality is not as good as that of an ignorant worker! It is only appropriate to use rough methods to deal with you! Damn you, did Huabei sell you After Japan, can you still be the dean of literature at Peking University? Are you still happy when you kill and frame a few enthusiastic young students like me? Even if you stop the boiling of our patriotism, for you What good is it? Is it good for your conscience? I warn you now: If you tear up the patriotic notice again in the future, your legs will be broken and you will be called a dog! Don’t say it without hesitation Also!" One day later, Hu Shi went to class and found that Zhou Zumo was the only student.Years later, it was precisely this Zhou Zumo who made considerable academic achievements, while those students who were filled with righteous indignation were engulfed by the flame he ignited.

Hu Shi said: "A long time ago, a Zen monk said, 'Bodhidharma came to the east, just looking for someone who will not be deceived.' I have a thousand words here, but I just want to teach people a way not to be deceived. By Confucius It is certainly not wise to be led by the nose by Zhu Xi and Marx; it is not a hero to be led by the nose by Marx, Lenin, and Stalin. I myself never want to be led by the nose. My young friends learn some self-defense skills and try to be a person who will not be deceived by others."
