In 1914, Hu Shi, who had only been in the United States for four years, was deeply saddened by the obsessive life of overseas students, and wrote the worrying "Non-Study Abroad Chapter".The first four sentences of this eloquent and eloquent article are: "Students studying abroad are the great shame of our country; studying abroad, the boat of transition is not a brick to knock on the door; studying abroad, it is a waste of time and money, and half the effort; For overseas students, it is an emergency plan rather than a long-term plan." On February 20, 1915, Hu Shi, who was studying in the United States, discussed the importance of national universities in a conversation with his English teacher Yadan, which was very exciting. So he wrote in his diary that day: "In the future, I will see a national university in China comparable to Harvard in this country, Cambridge and Oxford in England, Berlin in virtue, and Paris in law. I will die in peace. Husband! World peace cannot be tolerated." Forty million square miles and a population of forty million is a big country with a university! World security can accommodate a country without a university!"

In 1916, Hu Shi, who was in the United States, said in a letter to a friend that he "has no extravagant hopes recently, but I hope that after returning to China, I can engage in social education with a bitter mouth and a bald pen. That's all." Hu Shi once said: "There is no shame in the country without a navy; there is no shame in the country without an army! It is shameful that the country has no universities, no public libraries, no museums, and no art galleries. The people of our country are so ashamed!" Hu Shi warned students: "Those who have to wait until they have a library to study will refuse to study when they have a library. Those who have to wait until they have a laboratory to do research will not do research when they have a laboratory."

Hu Shi once issued such encouragement to people: Dear friends, let us all learn from the sea, "When the flood flooded the Dragon King Temple, the family did not recognize the family." "They" can still tolerate stones and dirty water; What's more, what about "our" family's misunderstanding and suspicion?Dear friends, let us all go up and forward from now on, and don't step back on the small stones that can't hurt people, let alone trample on each other. Our public enemy is ahead of us; the direction of our progress is upward. Hu Shi wrote in a letter to Lu Xun, Zhou Zuoren and Chen Yuan: I am a person who loves freedom. Although others may laugh at liberalism as a relic of the nineteenth century, what I fear most is a suspicion , cruel, intolerant society.I deeply feel that both sides of your pen battle contain a bit of intolerance, so it has unknowingly affected many young friends, implying that they are heading in the direction of cruelty and intolerance. This is the most regrettable.

Hu Shi had a very close relationship with Chen Duxiu, either talking freely or arguing.Once there was a heated argument, Chen Duxiu asked: "Shizhi, don't you even recognize imperialism?" Hu Shi got angry and said: "Zhongfu, how can there be imperialism! How can there be imperialism!" Picking up his crutches, he stood on the floor After a few clicks, he left. And when he reviewed himself, he admired Chen Duxiu's spirit of hard work. He said that he "cannot be as hardworking as Duxiu on the one hand, and not as reckless as Shuming on the other hand, so I am very ashamed." The human spirit, he himself looks weak by comparison.

In August 1934, Hu Shi said sincerely to the people of the country: All the problems in Chinese education today are due to our lack of confidence in education, our lack of attention, and our reluctance to spend money.Education is "bankrupt" because there is too little and not enough education.Education fails precisely because we don't really have education today. Hu Shi wrote a 1600-word letter to Ren Hongjun, urging him not to resign as the president of Sichuan University. After writing, I brought it to Ren Hongjun and had a long talk with him for two hours. Hu Shi has done a lot of work on the history of Zen Buddhism and has a lot of experience, but he doesn't like the mysteries of Zen Buddhism itself.Once, after a friend's banquet, everyone asked for inscriptions. Liang Shiqiu accidentally wrote a verse about "no relationship".Hu Shi said seriously: "That's a lie, you can't trust him."

During the Anti-Japanese War, Zhou Zuoren was trapped in Beiping. Hu Shi heard that Zhou Zuoren had a rebellious heart in London, so he sent a poem to persuade him.The poem said: "Mr. Zang Hui had a dream last night. He dreamed that the old monk who was drinking tea in the Kuyu nunnery suddenly put down the tea clock and went out, flying southward with a stick. Isn't it too hard for thousands of miles in the south? Only for the wise to know Heaviness and lightness. When I wake up from the dream, I put on my clothes and open the window, who knows that I am a little lovesick at this moment.” Mr. Zang Hui refers to Hu Shi himself, and Ku Yu’an refers to Zhou Zuoren.Unexpectedly, Zhou Zuoren failed to "know the important and the light".

On the eve of liberation, students in Peiping often demonstrated and marched, and the CCP’s underground party was behind it.However, every time the military police and police of the Kuomintang in Beiping arrested the students, Hu Shi would take his car, which was still rare in Peking at that time, and drive between the various yamen, forcing the Kuomintang Civil Affairs Bureau to release the students. He also wrote letters in his own hand to the dignitaries in Nanjing stationed in Beiping. For the same purpose, it is said that these letters still exist today. Hu Shi met a professor in the United States who had lived abroad for a long time and did not plan to return to China. Hu said to him in Chinese at the meeting: "I advise you to go back to Taiwan, at least go back to live for a year or so on vacation. You must know that there is no Nationality is the most painful."

In the 1950s, in the introduction to a book written by Hu Shi overseas, he quoted Jin Yuelin's self-criticism in the "thought reform movement".He was deeply worried about Jin's fate, saying: A dark era of persecution has begun. In the early 1960s, when Hu Shi talked about old friends in Taiwan, he said: "Qian Duansheng, Zhu Guangqian, Shen Congwen, Hua Luogeng and others who have been anti-three and five-anti are now very bitter."
