Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Thought
Hu Shi was one of the main leaders of the New Culture Movement, but he said that because of his deep historical obsession, he was not worthy of being a revolutionary cause. The most important vanguard of the literary revolution was not himself, but his friend Chen Duxiu. In 1916, when Hu Shi was engaged in a new literature debate with others, he wrote "Qinyuanchun Oath Poetry". I am amazing, creating new literature for Greater China, who do I want to let in this business? Poetry materials, there is a new world for me to drive." Later, Hu Shi felt arrogant and uneasy, so he used his drafts repeatedly. The final draft is: "I will not learn from Qin Qi or Huang Jiu, but if you want to be like me, how can you act like a man? Words must be sincere, and words must have something; who should sue if the meaning is ordinary? From now on, if you are in the door, you are not a man. .”

At the beginning of the establishment of Tsinghua National Academy, Cao Yunxiang, the president of Tsinghua University, invited Hu Shi to preside over the affairs of the Tsinghua Academy of Chinese Studies, which was under construction.Hu Shi immediately resigned, saying that he was only a consultant and not the dean. He suggested that President Cao adopt the tutor system of the Song and Yuan academies, and absorb the thematic research method of academic papers of graduate schools of foreign universities to run the research institute. After hearing this, President Cao thought it was true, and said on the spot that he would invite Hu to be a mentor, and recruit famous scholars from all over the world to demonstrate in person, so as to preserve the continuous blood of Chinese culture.Hu Shi said modestly: "I am not a first-class scholar, and I am not worthy of being a research institute instructor. I really dare not be. You'd better invite three masters, Liang Rengong, Wang Jing'an, and Zhang Taiyan, to run the institute well." Seeing Hu Shi's sincere attitude, Cao Yunxiang , and felt that this remark was very reasonable, so he decided to put it into action in the way and method guided by Hu Shi.Later Hu Shi assisted and invited Wang Guowei and others.
