Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Thought
When Liang Shuming reminisced about childhood anecdotes, he said: The small string of copper coins he had saved disappeared, and there was endless noise. My father found it on a peach tree branch in front of the court and asked him to see it.When Liang Shuming looked at it, he saw a small note written by his father on the tree: A child was playing under the peach tree, and occasionally hung a small string of money on the branch and forgot it, asking people everywhere, making a lot of noise. The next day, his father cleaned the courtyard and saw the money hanging on the tree, so he gave instructions.Children begin to realize their confusion.

When he was young, Liang Shuming loved quiet thinking, didn't like sports, and had a weak physique. His ability to take care of himself is also poor, and he couldn't put on his own pants when he was 6 years old.Once his family called him to get up, but he said, "My sister won't let me wear pants." This has always been a joke among the family. "Since childhood, he was stupid, and almost all of his primary school years were inferior to others." But as he grew older and gained more knowledge, he determined to cultivate his spirit of "self-study, self-improvement, and self-improvement".

When Liang Shuming was 20 years old, he worked as a reporter for the "Republic of China", and the pen name he often used when publishing articles was Shoumin or Shoumin. At that time, he was young, working as a field reporter, traveling to the presidential palace, the State Council, visiting school groups, writing articles on political news, public life and people's livelihood. When Yuan Shikai held the inauguration ceremony of the interim president in Beijing, he witnessed it as a reporter of the "Republic of China".He recalled in his later years: "Yuan Shikai was close to our reporter. He was short and stubby, with a bald head (hat was held in his hand), a short beard with a few gray hairs, and around the beard and on both cheeks. It has not been trimmed and scraped clean, and a military uniform is also crumpled, which does not match the solemn ceremony of the inauguration of the President."

Liang Shuming’s life was full of contradictions. He once said that there were four unexpected things in his life: first, he hated philosophy the most, but he taught philosophy himself; second, he never read Confucius’ books in school, As a result, he talked about the philosophy of Confucius; third, he never went to university, but later taught in university; fourth, he was born in the city and grew up in the city, but devoted his life to working in the countryside. At the age of 14, Liang Shuming entered Shuntian Middle School, where he was a classmate with Zhang Shenfu and Tang Yongtong. At that time, he was best friends with Liao Fushen, Wang Yufen and Yao Wanli in his class. They call each other eldest brother, second brother, and third brother according to age.One day when the four of them talked about being happy, Liao Fushen proposed to pick out a word based on each person's shortcoming, and call it by name as a warning. So Liao named everyone: Classmate Wang is cowardly, but a woman is very angry, so he named him "Cowardly"; "; he called Liang Shuming "arrogance".Liang Shuming thought it was very pertinent and appropriate.Liang Shuming was really "proud" at that time, and his composition scores often ranked first in the class. "My characteristic is that I always like to do reversible articles, and I don't want to fall into the cliché." I can win by surprise, and sometimes fail because of haste.A Mr. Guowen surnamed Wang was very disgusted with this, and commented: "Likes and dislikes touch people's nature, and disasters will catch the husband." However, a later Mr. Fan appreciated it, and praised it as "the words are not shocking and endless".

In Shuntian Middle School, Liang Shuming especially admired Guo Renlin, who was in a lower grade than himself: "His thoughts are higher than mine, and his spirit is enough to cover me." Liang Zun called him "Master Guo", and often went to ask for advice after class, and organized his conversations Into a book, titled "Guo Shi Quotations".Schoolmates ridiculed "Liang Xianren meets Guo Shengren".Liang Shuming recalled: "I have always broken through the narrow utilitarian thinking, and I began to respect philosophy."The other person Liang admired was Zhen Yuanxi, a transfer student in the same class and a revolutionary. Zhen encouraged him to cut his braids and introduced him to join the Beijing-Tianjin League.

Liang Shuming gave lectures on "Introduction to Indian Philosophy", "Mahayana Realism", "East and West Culture and Philosophy" and other courses at Peking University. He had many opinions and was very popular with the students. Around 1923, when Liang Shuming gave a lecture on "Confucianism", there were only more than 90 people officially registered, and more than 200 people usually listened to the lecture. But Liang was not good at words, and his writing was not fluent. Whenever he talked about a certain truth, he often couldn't explain it impromptu, so he was anxious to touch the wall with his hand or hit his head with his hand to think deeply. It is said that when Liang lectured on Indian philosophy and Consciousness-Only Theory, Peng Jixiang and Yu Guangwei from the Department of Philosophy disagreed with Liang’s point of view. They explained to others the reason for attending the lecture: “We are here to hear how ridiculous he is. Yes." Liang didn't think he was disobedient either.

In 1944, Liang Shuming took the post of Secretary-General of the Democratic League and introduced Qian Jiaju to join the League.New league members filled out the "Volunteer Form for Joining the League" and signed and stamped it. After the volunteer form was filled out, he asked him to burn it on the spot.Because the NLD was still an "underground organization" at that time. Liang Shuming lived a long life, and many people asked him for advice on how to keep in good health. His answer is very interesting: "Eat less and move more".He doesn't smoke.Alcohol is only drunk occasionally, when it is absolutely necessary. He said humorously: "Eating is to entertain yourself, and drinking is to entertain others."
