Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Thought
Xiong Shili's entire work, in short, is to face the impact of Western learning, rebuild the ontology of Confucianism, rebuild the moral self of man, and rebuild the subjectivity of Chinese culture in an era when the value system of Confucianism is collapsing.Under his spiritual inspiration, his students Tang Junyi, Mou Zongsan, and Xu Fuguan developed, expanded, deepened, and sublated along the spiritual direction he created and the metaphysical foundation he laid. The academic circles regard them as the backbone of modern Neo-Confucianism. Mou Zongsan, Tang Junyi, and Xu Fuguan are the three major disciples of Xiong Shili, but Mou Zongsan has followed Xiong Shili the longest and received the most education.

Mou Zongsan once said: My parents gave birth to me, Master Xiong taught me, and Brother Junyi (Tang Junyi) knew me. Mr. Wu Sen commented: From Mou's self-reported learning and thinking process, it is Mr. Xiong Shili who influenced his life's learning and thinking the most. From Mr. Xiong's academics and personality, he realized the meaning of life and value.Without Mr. Xiong's inspiration, Mou might spend his whole life studying logic and epistemology without going back to Confucianism. This big conversion is like St. Paul's coming to Christ.Paul later became a martyr for the Church.Mou also became a pillar of modern Confucianism. There seems to be no second example of this kind of road to success through twists and turns in the ideological circles of modern China.

Mou Zongsan critically inherited Xiong Shili's philosophy and his previous Chinese philosophy. What Mou Zongsan inherited was not Xiong Shili's philosophical system, but Xiong Shili's philosophical spirit.Xiong Shili greatly enlightened Mou Zongsan from the perspective of life style and philosophical spirit; Mou Zongsan inherited, exalted, expanded and promoted Xiong Shili in terms of life style and philosophical wisdom. Xiong Shili has two daughters and one son: the eldest daughter, Youguang, who retired from Beijing Aviation Academy, and the second daughter, Zaiguang, who now lives in Shanghai. His son Shi Bo, who studied at Southwest Associated University and then worked in Shanghai Ship Research Institute, has passed away. His son has two sons and two daughters, and the names of the two girls are "Yuan" and "Ru".The two sons each had a daughter, and they were named "Ming Xin" and "Ming Zong"; it is also a memorial for the elderly by the younger generations. It is said that his great-granddaughter Xiong Mingxin is a master's student in the Philosophy Department of Fudan University in Shanghai, and she is recommended to study in Germany without taking the exam.
