Xiong Shili said in "Shili Yuyao": People call me lonely.I don't think people are lonely and cold to the extreme, unbearable to live in harmony with the world. Xiong Shili is so quiet. In the 1930s, in a small courtyard west of Yinzha Road in the beach where he lived, the door was always closed. To avoid disturbing idlers, a large white paper was pasted on the door, which read: "Recently people often come here to find someone People, so-and-so lived in this hospital before, but now he does not live in this hospital. I really don't know where so-and-so lives, please don't knock on the door again." Everyone who saw it couldn't help laughing.

Xiong Shili was introduced by Cai Yuanpei to the Philosophy Department of Peking University as a full-time lecturer with a monthly salary of 120 yuan.Xiong Shili is a man, he will not be admired by others, he just does his own knowledge, and his name as a lecturer has continued until the "July 7th Incident" and he left Beijing. He never participated in the department's opening, graduation, welcoming new and sending off old activities. As a lecturer, he stands tall in front of any professor. No matter who came to visit, he never talked about the weather with people, and when he talked about it, he just talked about learning. In addition to the students who came to ask for advice, there were Mr. Tang Yongtong, Lin Zaiping, Meng Wentong, He Lin, and Zhang Dongsun who interacted with Mr. Xiong in Beiping. It was these gentlemen who came to Mr. Xiong's house, and Mr. Xiong never visited.

According to Xu Fuguan's recollection, Xiong Shili liked to be alone. He once warned Xu Fuguan that if he wanted to study, he had to separate himself from his wife in life, "How can you study seriously when you are so close to your wife and children?...My young man is weak... It is the first move of the whole god to be strong and far away from women in my whole life."When Xiong Shili said these words, he and his wife did not live together, "the teacher's wife lives about 300 meters away."In the early 1950s, Xiong Shili lived in Yindingqiao. His wife who lived in Shanghai wanted to live in Beijing for a while, but Xiong Shili refused to agree.

Han Yuwen, Xiong Shili's student, recalled that Mr. Xiong told him that one should not be willing to stay in the lower ranks in learning. To be a scholar, one must aspire to be a top-notch scholar. Without this ambition, one should not be a scholar.Learning is like fighting on the battlefield. You must never turn back. You must not be tempted by wealth and wealth, and you must not take care of your wife and children. Xiong Shili did not live with his family for a long time in order to concentrate on his research. He gets up at 4 o'clock every morning to read and write, and at noon he only sits with his eyes closed for a while, and there is a note on his desk that reads "Don't speak for more than 3 minutes".

After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War and before the liberation, Xiong Shili lived in two remodeled collective dormitories in the backyard of the solitary people's hall of Peking University on the beach, with an area of about 20 square meters. After liberation, the State Council rented him a house near Jiaodaokou, with five rooms in the north, and purchased necessary furniture for him. After he and his adopted daughter Zhong Guang came to Beijing, they lived here. Two or three months later, Xiong Shili felt that the courtyard was noisy, so he moved again, to Baochansi Street in Xicheng, where he lived in the last courtyard, which was a single courtyard. After living here for a long time, the State Council bought Mr. Xiong a small courtyard house in Ya'er Hutong, Beihai, not far from Shichahai Houhai.

In 1954, Xiong Shili finally couldn't bear the severe cold and loneliness in the north, so he moved to Shanghai at the end of the year to live with his son.The son Xiong Shipu's family has a large population and young children, which made Xiong Shili, who has been used to quiet all his life, very uncomfortable, so he had to find another place to live.At that time, Marshal Chen Yi was the mayor of Shanghai. Xiong Shili wrote a letter to ask Chen Yi for help with the housing matter. Chen immediately replied and resolved it. The letter said: "Mr. Whether you are engaged in writing or personal cultivation, the government should take care and assist you....Even if the academic opinions are not the same, there is no need to force them to be the same. You don’t have to worry about this matter.”

In the autumn of 1962, Wang Yuanhua came to Huaihai Middle Road to visit the famous Buddhist scholar Xiong Shili.I have long heard that Mr. Xiong has a wild personality and is a wild and uninhibited weird character.Standing in front of Xiong Shili's gate, Wang Yuanhua saw a piece of letter paper pasted on the door. The paper had faded and the handwriting was still thick. The general idea is that I am old and frail and in poor health, so please do not visit. When talking about my physical condition, I was very specific, such as flushed face, lack of Qi, rising fire and so on.Wang Yuanhua sighed, no wonder it is said that Mr. Xiong has a weird personality.
