Home Categories Biographical memories Talking about Great Literati in the Republic of China: Those Masters of Thought
On the day Master Hongyi was ordained, his student Li Hongliang went to see him. The master said that now he only needs four or five cents a month, and he can wash his clothes by himself. Apart from buying stamps, he doesn't need money, so he doesn't need it for a while. At the time of parting, the master inscribed the four words "Recite Buddha honestly" on Li with a piece of rough-edged paper.Li could only hold the word and backed out silently. Master Hongyi is the ancestor of Zhongxing of Nanshan Lvzong.Vinaya focuses on the study and transmission of precepts. Hongyi strictly abides by the precepts. He does not eat after noon and only eats twice a day. The first time is around 6 am and the second time is around 11 am.His diet is extremely simple, and he never wastes money. His daily necessities are all items from when he became a monk. In the past twenty-six years, it has never been easier.A robe with a collar, two hundred and twenty-four patches, blue and gray, very tattered.

Master Hongyi changed it to one meal for a solar eclipse and no food after noon.Among the vegetarian dishes, he does not eat Chinese cabbage, winter bamboo shoots, and shiitake mushrooms, because their prices are much more expensive than other vegetarian dishes.Except for three shabby clothes and a shoulder of the Buddhist scriptures, he has no possessions, and has never accepted charity from others. The net funds provided by close friends and disciples are also used to publish Buddhist scriptures. Master Hongyi set an example everywhere. He once appeared to teach the monks: "Everyone, please look at the pair of yellow shoes on my feet. They were given to me by a monk who was reciting the Buddha's Seventh Seventh Year in Hangzhou in the ninth year of the Republic of China. If you are free, You can go to my room and have a look. My quilt face is still used before I became a monk; I also have a foreign umbrella, which was also bought in the early years of the Republic of China. It’s the same as the new one. It can be used for the best of my life! It’s like eating, I only eat some good things when I’m sick, other than that, I never dare to buy good things casually.”

Ruijin recalled that Master Hongyi "has no more than three pieces of clothing, even in the severe winter. For example, he wears seven clothes when he is enthroned, and he wears Haiqing (the monk's clothing with Han Guangsleeves) for ordinary gatherings. Someone gave him Thick shirts and thick jackets are all given to others.... There is a line in Ma Yifu's poem about him: "I know that my heart is a Buddha, and I always take precepts as my teacher." He is well-deserved." Liu Zhiping recalled: "I recalled my teacher's fiftieth birthday, and counted the holes in his mosquito net. They were patched with cloth and pasted with paper. Please don't change them. After coming to Fujian, they were so dilapidated that they could not be reused. So I sent a letter to Shanghai Sanyou Industrial Co., Ltd. I bought another ventilation gauze tent to replace it. I have been a monk for twenty-five years, and I only wear a few sets of monk clothes."

Once, Master Hongyi received 20 yuan from his disciple Liu Zhiping, so he replied that he spent "about one or two yuan a month, at most three yuan. The expenses of monks are not much, and those who are good at saving can only spend two yuan a year. Human beings are especially extravagant." Liu Jianxin was on the verge of tears. In 1924, Liu Zhipin asked someone to bring biscuits, longan, and dried bamboo shoots to Master Hongyi. The master ordered people to keep them and take them to Taoist companions when he went to Wenzhou. Xiaoyue recorded in the "Biography of Master Hongyi": Master Hongyi "traveled in all directions, with one monk and one bowl, barefoot and topless, and not among the vulgar". "A robe with a collar, two hundred and twenty-four patches (existing at the place of the layman Ziyuan), blue and gray, shabby, and the same as when he first became a monk. In the past 26 years, nothing has changed. He was not famous in his life. Receive support, do not keep disciples, do not serve as abbots", because presiding over the practice hinders practice, do not open large seats, because "the audience is mixed, and abuses abound."

During the Anti-Japanese War, Shanghai Layman Liu Chuansheng was worried about Master Hongyi's difficulties in life, so he offered a thousand yuan as an offering. To buy rice grains for monks to fast.He also took out a pair of real platinum crystal glasses made in the United States that his friend Xia Mianzun gave him many years ago. They sold for 500 yuan and presented them to Kaiyuan Temple. Xia Mianzun once recalled the situation when Master Hongyi was stranded in Ningbo: Hongyi lived in the Yunshui Hall of Qita Temple for a while, and told Xia that he only came to the temple to place an order that day, and stayed in a small hotel two days ago.Xia asked: "That hotel is not very refreshing." Hong Yi replied: "Very good! There are not many bedbugs, but two or three. The host treats me very politely!" .Xia looked around, there were forty or fifty wandering monks living in Shuiyun Hall, he couldn't imagine how comfortable it was.

After bringing Hongyi to the shore of Baima Lake, Xia Begizun placed him in Chunhui Middle School. After cleaning, Hongyi opened the bedding, spread a broken mat on the bed, spread out the quilt, and rolled up some clothes for pillows, then took out a blackened and tattered towel, and went to the lake to wash his face.Xia couldn't help but offered to change a towel for him, and he carefully spread out the towel to scare: "Where, it's still usable, and it's about the same as the new one." Xia Mianzun went to deliver food to Hongyi every day. On the third day, Hongyi said to Xia that there was no need to send the fast food from home in the future, and he could go there to eat by himself. He also said with a smile that it was the duty of a monk to beg for food thing.Xia had no choice but to agree to come down, but insisted that he would still send it for rainy days.Hongyi said: "It doesn't matter, if it rains, I still have clogs!" Then he said: "A little walk every day is also a good exercise." Xia Mianzun had to agree.

One day, Xia Mianzun went to visit Master Hongyi, just in time someone brought vegetarian dishes, Xia also ate, one of the dishes was too salty, Xia said: "This is too salty!" Hongyi said lightly: "Okay, salty It also has a salty taste, which is good!" The Buddha stipulated in the precepts that monks should not return to their old karma, so as not to hinder their practice. After Hongyi became a monk, he almost gave up all secular knowledge, and only used calligraphy to attract sentient beings.Buddhist monks should always change their residences, and don't be greedy and reluctant to give up in one place. After Hongyi became a monk, he lived in no fixed place, with one monk and one bowl, and moved between various temples in Zhejiang, Fujian and other places.

In the spring of 1922, Master Hongyi wrote in a letter to his nephew Li Shengzhang: "He has served as a teacher in Hangzhou for six years, and as a consultant for Nanjing Higher Normal School for two years. Unbearable. Selfishness is greatly comforted. The matter of promoting literature and art has come to an end." Master Hongyi kept the discipline very strictly. For the rest of his life, he only had rag shoes and an umbrella with him. When Master Hongyi was giving lectures in Fujian, a 16-year-old boy in Yongchun wrote to him, saying that he was busy with drinking. He immediately wrote back and said: "I have heard about Huishu, so I am ashamed! From tomorrow onwards, I will follow the order to meditate behind closed doors and abandon everything."

Master Hongyi has "three don'ts": one is not to be a host, because presiding over a lot of secular affairs hinders practice; In January 1939, Master Hongyi gave a lecture titled "The Last Day" in Xiamen Yangzhengyuan. The missing two words in the title were probably concealed by Master Ruijin, the recorder at that time. Some researchers guessed that the title should be "The Last Confession".Hongyi said in his speech: "Since I became a monk, my evil thoughts have increased day by day, and my good thoughts have declined day by day. Until now, I can be said to be a very mellow person who is devoted to doing evil... Among them, after the southern Fujian Ten years of hard work, especially the depravity....Since I arrived in Quanzhou on the 20th of the first lunar month, I have been confused for two months....Why have I changed my routine recently, giving lectures everywhere, and often seeing visitors? There are always banquets, and he has become a 'social monk'!"
