Fu Sinian was a prominent figure in the May Fourth Movement. He once said proudly: "On the morning of the May 4th, I was the chairman, and in the afternoon I carried the banner to Zhaojialou. I broke into Cao Rulin's residence." One month before the outbreak of the May 4th Patriotic Movement, Fu Sinian said in his article "Reform of Vernacular Literature and Psychology": "In the hands of Westerners, any new doctrine or new cause may not win quickly, but success is not muddled. Once in the hands of the Chinese, it always bears an unripe fruit and falls immediately."

On the eve of the May 4th Movement in 1919, Fu Sinian wrote in a poem "Being arrogant and respectful" in praise of Jesus:
This is exactly the portrayal of Fu Sinian's attitude in dealing with the world and his life's hard work. Fu Sinian was splashed with muddy water by a passing car because he was walking, so he said angrily: "The one who rides in the car should be shot!" After Fu Sinian finished speaking, he walked and thought, and the more he thought about it, the more he felt that he made sense. So he published this sentence in the magazine, and won the unanimous praise of the public.During the "May 4th" movement, students from Peking University and Tsinghua University marched to Zhushikou and were giving a speech when a car drove up and honked its horn when it saw the crowd.Everyone remembered Fu Sinian's words, so everyone shouted and beat them, and when they went up, they were overturned and smashed.

This scene caused a Tsinghua student who was also in the parade to shake his head, and has since opposed violent behavior all his life. This person is Liang Shiqiu. On the morning of May 4, 1919, Fu Sinian presided over a meeting of student representatives from 13 schools at Tangzi Hutong National Legislative and Political College. The meeting decided that the representatives of each school should immediately go back to the school to gather their classmates, and gather in front of Tiananmen Square at 1 p.m. to protest against the unfair provisions of the imperialists on the Shandong issue in the Paris peace treaty.

In the afternoon, more than 3,000 students from various schools gathered in Tiananmen Square. Fu Sinian served as the commander-in-chief of the parade, carrying the banner and walking in the forefront of the team. The student parade was blocked in front of the American embassy at the west gate of Dongjiaomin Lane, and then turned to Cao Rulin's residence, Zhaojialou.Angry students beat Zhang Zongxiang who stayed in Cao's house, set fire to Zhao's house, Beiyang warlords sent troops to the scene to suppress, and arrested 32 students on the spot.Fu Sinian left the scene earlier, so he was not arrested. When he returned to school that night, he said to his classmate Yao Congwu: "Peking University has suffered a great loss this time, and many of my classmates have been arrested."

On May 5, Fu Sinian got into a fight with a classmate who was "so impulsive that he lost his mind." He became furious and "sweared that he would not work in the student union." In this way, Fu Sinian withdrew from the vigorous student movement. On August 26, 1919, Fu Sinian wrote a letter to his good friend, Yuan Tongli, who worked in Tsinghua University after graduating from Peking University. At this time, Fu Sinian had decided to study in Europe with a quota funded by Shandong government.Fu Sinian said in the letter: "Since the May 4th Movement, China's new motives have been revealed, which makes people ten times more courageous."

In October of the same year, Fu Sinian published the article "Review and Prospect of "New Tide"" in "New Tide" Volume 2, Issue 1, and also talked about the impact of the May 4th Movement. He wrote: "After the May 4th Movement, the trend of Chinese society has changed. There are many more people who are enlightened, and those who have not been awakened by themselves are also frightened to wake up by these few thunderbolts. ... The era of social reform movement will follow But he said at the same time: "I think there are too many journals, a bit immature and playful." "It is also necessary to pay attention to accumulating strength at the first level. Venting too early and too vigorously may cause no benefit or loss in the future." He hopes that colleagues in "Xin Chao" can make solid efforts, with a view to "after ten years, earn a solid income." Effect".

Fu Sinian said in the article "Two Causes of Youth" written to commemorate the first anniversary of the May 4th Movement: "If there is a society in China, it will never be silent, listen to the government's actions, and wait for the students to come out to shout. If China has a society , there will never be no public opinion to supervise the government. If China had a society, it would never be as bad as this.” Fu Sinian said: "I think if young people only know that there are mass movements but not individual movements, there must be several problems. (1) (Mass movements) may not be able to absorb the effect of 'the wind destroys the strong grass' for a while. But After a long time, most of them cannot be supported due to the unsoundness of the molecules. (2) Society is generated, not created for no reason. Therefore, in order to achieve a long-term, eternal and uncorrupted society, improvement should start with improving individuals. If you forget the individual , Even if it is reformed for a while, there will inevitably be a movement to restore the old. (3) Mass movements are too common, and people who are lazy—naturally accounting for too many—will be included in the ranks of 'disorderly'.
