After Zhou Zuoren was born, Zhou's mother, Lu Rui, found that the child was very quiet and rarely cried. Even when he was hungry, he just poked his mouth left and right to look for food, but he didn't cry.She said to her husband Zhou Boyi: "This child is patient. The eldest is like me, and he is like you." Zhou Zuoren was ranked second. He suffered from smallpox when he was young, and his body was weak. His parents were less strict with him, and they didn't pay as much attention to his training as the eldest. When the two brothers Lu Xun and Zhou Zuoren were together, many things were decided by the boss Lu Xun, and he just followed behind. Therefore, Zhou Zuoren was highly dependent and didn't like to show his face very much.During their father's illness, a lot of heavy work, such as running the pawn shop, asking for a doctor, picking up medicine, etc., were all undertaken by the eldest brother.

These incidents left indelible memories for Lu Xun, but rarely moved Zhou Zuoren. The two brothers went to Sanwei Bookstore to study, went to Nanjing to study, and went to Japan to study, etc. Lu Xun was the first step, and Zhou Zuoren just followed behind.Even to teach at Peking University, Lu Xun contacted Zhou Zuoren through his relationship with Cai Yuanpei. Therefore, at that time, the Zhou family said that the second child was a "blessed man" of the Zhou family. But Mrs. Lu said with emotion: "Actually, their brothers all grew up in the Zhou family, which was full of disasters. No one is blessed. It's just that the second child has a smart, capable and responsible brother who is 4 years older than him. Everything in the family is taken care of by my brother.”

Lu Rui said that Zhou Zuoren "has been taken care of by everyone since he was a child, and he has developed his dependence. He has to rely on his family members in everything, especially his boss. He has no sense of responsibility for the family. In his heart, the family members The boss is responsible for everything, it has nothing to do with him, he is more selfish." In the first month of 1897, Zhou Zuoren went to Hangzhou with his grandfather’s concubine Aunt Pan (sometimes referred to as “Mrs. Song” in Zhou Zuoren’s articles). He was sentenced to be beheaded by Emperor Guangxu for a bribery case in scientific examinations, and was detained in Hangzhou. The grandfather Zhou Fuqing in the prison.Zhou Zuoren and Aunt Pan lived in a place called Huapailou. Zhou Zuoren was "detained in a small building" and "life was so monotonous and boring".Some scholars believe that this period of life is also one of the reasons for the formation of Zhou Zuoren's indifferent personality.

There is a big apricot tree in the yard of Badaowan. When it was in bloom, Zhou passed under the tree every day yesterday, but he didn't know that the flowers were blooming. Therefore, Lu Xun said that Zhou Zuoren "turned a blind eye", and Lu Xun said with emotion: "I can't do the ability of Zhou Zuoren to read books indifferently when the children are crying, I can't do it anyway!" Zhou Zuoren called the masses beaten by the warlords "bruises" and so on. Zhou Zuoren has a pen name called "Hesheng", which is derived from the nickname "He" given to him by Jiang Yichen when he was studying in Japan, which has a kind of indifference and aloofness.

Zhou Zuoren has a 13-character signature: Jingzhao Buyi Badaowan Jushi Kucha Nunnery Master. Zhou Zuoren said: "I read it since I was a child, and the result I get now is a little sympathy for the hermit besides the idea of the mean." He admires Tao Yuanming. confidant". Zhou Zuoren was afraid of internal affairs, and obeyed his wife Taixinzi Yu in everything. After falling out with Lu Xun, Nobuko and his younger sister Fangzi (the first wife of Zhou Zuoren's third brother Zhou Jianren) brought their parents from Japan to Badaowan. After the "September 18th" incident, the situation in Beiping was very unstable. Whenever there was a disturbance, Xinzi and others asked the servants to take off the "Zhou's house" hanging on the gate of the Badaowan residence and replace it with the "Yutaiyu" sign , also hung the Japanese flag. But Zhou Zuoren let it go without stopping. After Lu Xun heard about it, he said meaningfully: Now there is only the second Chinese in Badaowan, and he is so dizzy.

In 1944, Lin Yutang first met Shen Jianshi and they met to climb Huashan. On the way, Shen told Lin that when Zhou Zuoren was the education chief of the Japanese imperial court in Beiping, the Japanese locked up the anti-Japanese youth in the Red Building of Peking University, and they were beaten and wailed in the middle of the night. , It was so horrible that Zhou Zuoren pretended to be deaf and turned a blind eye.Shen Jianshi wept while talking, Lin Yutang couldn't help feeling, the heat is terrible, and the cold is especially terrible! (Note: Lin said that Lu Xun was extremely hot and Zhou Zuoren was extremely cold)

Zhou Li'an recorded that from August 15, 1945, when Japan unconditionally surrendered to the end of September, the Kuomintang government carried out a large-scale suppression of rape and arrested many people. And during these forty days, Zhou Zuoren often went to Liulichang to visit second-hand bookstores, calm and at ease, without any fear of storms coming. Before Zhou Zuoren was arrested, Deng Yunxiang, a Peking University student, went to Zhou’s office to ask Zhou to write a manuscript. Zhou was preparing to go to Nanjing to deal with the traitor’s lawsuit. When I write an article, I will definitely write it for you in the future.”

In his later years, when Zhou Zuoren talked about his opponent Chen Xiying, he said indifferently: "Chen Xiying is also a very talented person, but because of his friendship with his fellow countrymen, he pretended to be an 'honest gentleman' and participated in the 'Women's Normal University' campaign. A lot of talent, but also a pity." Wang Shijing recalled that even when Zhou Zuoren talked about exciting things or things that should be deeply reflected, he was not excited, "still acting as if nothing had happened, even a little numb."When talking about protecting Li Dazhao's children and protecting Li's manuscripts after Li Dazhao's death, he was not excited, "as if he was narrating past events that had little to do with him"; I said 'oh no,' without any regrets or self-blame, as if I was talking about someone else's business."

Tong Wei recalled: "Zhou Zuoren didn't talk about himself being good or bad, and he didn't want to talk too much about Ren Pseudo-officials.... I tried to talk to him about this issue...but it basically failed. Once …When he mentioned this matter, he had a sad expression on his face and said: "That is also a last resort." I don't want to talk about other things. Once I mentioned this matter, he said, "I and some old friends also need to live." . . . the good deeds he did . . . he didn't say a word, as if it hadn't happened, and it seemed to have happened, but the past is past, and it's no longer worth talking about."

Zhou Zuoren talked about Hu Shi in a letter to his friends: "(Hu Shi) naturally has his place to be scolded, but if he is scolded for speculation, it is despicable. I and Shizhi were casual friends (ordinary) Friends), I didn’t praise him enthusiastically at the beginning, and I didn’t scold him with the team afterwards. In other people’s opinion, whether they think it is right or wrong, it’s up to them, but I just think that’s how we should deal with him.” After Xinzi passed away, Zhou Zuoren said in a letter to a friend: "Although I feel a little lonely, the lonely life like an old monk may be suitable for me. I plan to do more translation work after I calm down for a while."
