Chapter 32 Chapter Thirty-Two

my other side 西德尼·谢尔顿 5732Words 2018-03-16
Entering the second season, "Space Fairy Love" finally changed to color.I got some screenwriters to share my work, but I wasn't happy with most of the scripts they turned in.Many of them thought it would be better to do something out of the ordinary, to have Barbara meet a Martian or some other whimsical character. And I think the key to the success of our show is its closeness to reality: the conflict between Jeanne and everyday, ordinary situations. In order to demonstrate to them, I wrote an episode like this: Tony went to work, a person from the tax office came to the house, and Jeanne received him.In order to impress the visitors, Jeanne conjured up paintings by Rembrandt, Picasso, Monet and Renoir all over the wall.

"You see," she said to the stunned inspector, "my master is very rich." Here comes Tony's trouble. In another episode, Tony takes Dr. Bellows to his house for dinner.Jeanne felt that the house was too small and shabby, so she conjured up a huge ballroom, a gorgeous restaurant, a vast garden and a big swimming pool.Tony had to explain all this to Dr. Bellows. From February 1966 to April of the following year, I wrote a signed script for thirty-eight episodes. In Hollywood, signature creation is the foundation of a screenwriter's life.Everyone struggles to get as many credits as possible, so that the next job can land.I also have my troubles.I feel like my byline is showing up too often. "Sydney Sheldon" has multiple credits: "Sidney Shelton Produced...Creator: Sidney Shelton...Producer: Sidney Shelton...Screenwriter: Sidney Shelton... Denny Sheldon... Copyright: Sidney Sheldon." Feels like I'm a megalomaniac.I called the Writers Guild and said I wanted to use three pseudonyms: Christopher Gronto, Alan Devine, Mark Rowan.Since then, most of the scripts have signed these three pseudonyms, at least the screenwriter's department is no longer my name.

After the first year of filming was completed, Gurney Nelson had other contracts, and he planned to leave the crew.I think I will miss him.Since then I have worked with many directors, most notably Claudio Guzman and Hal Cooper. "Space Fairy Love" continues to broadcast. Sammy Davis Jr. came over to our house one night for dinner. "Sammy, have you seen "Space Fairy Love"?" "Must watch every episode, I love it so much." "Are you interested in a cameo?" "Of course," he said, "call my agent." The next morning, I called his agent, "Sammy wants to make a cameo on "Space Fairy". Can you arrange that?"

"Of course. What about the reward?" "A thousand dollars. That's what we pay our guest stars." I heard the other person snort contemptuously, "You're kidding. Sammy tipped the manicurist more than that. Forget it." "Then you call Sammy." An hour later, the phone rang, "When will you shoot?" Sammy did a great job. We also cast Barbara's husband, Michael Ansarana, as the Smurf in the show. I got a call from Groucho Marks who said, "It's too bad you're a guy with a lack of vision. I know there's a guy who's perfect for your series, and he's young, handsome, and a great actor."

I asked him, "Who are you talking about, Groucho?" "Who else? It's me." "Why didn't I think of that!" A week later, I wrote Groucho an episode called "World's Greatest Invention."His performance was, as always, fantastic.
One night Mary was in a play at school, and Joa and I were going to see her.I asked Groucho if he would come with us, and to his surprise he agreed. After the performance, Mary invited some classmates to come over to our house to play. They were all captivated by Groucho.Deep in my memory, there has always been a very touching scene: In our study, Groucho Max sat on a chair, and a group of boys and girls sat on the ground around him, listening to him talk about entertainment. Circle stories.

"Space Fairy Love" was a great success in its first year on the air, and its commercial operation has also been very good.Jeanne dolls and Jeanne bottles are available in the market, and Jeanne even has her own magazine, The Lamp.Fan letters poured in, but almost all of them were addressed to Barbara Eden.Larry's anger was uncontrollable. Everything seemed to be going well, though I still had to keep mediating things.Meanwhile, big trouble arose on the set of The Patty Duke Show.Patty begins to refuse to be controlled by the Rosses.Conflicts continued between the three of them.

They had a big fight one night, and Patty moved out and found another apartment of his own.Harry Falk flew to California and married Patty. The Rosses have since lost control of Patty. On set, though, the conflict was endless.By the end of the year it had gotten so out of hand that despite decent ratings, the broadcasters decided to cancel the show.
In 1967, I was nominated for an Emmy for the second season of "Space Girls."At the ceremony, I met Charles Schultz, who was nominated for Charlie Brown.I'm a big fan of him and his friend Charlie Brown. We chatted and I found out that he was a lovely elf himself. He said he was a Jeanne fan.

I told Charles that my favorite part of the "Peanuts" comic was when Snoopy sat at his typewriter and typed this sentence: His story must be told; On the next picture, he typed another sentence: Uh, maybe not so.Then he threw the paper away. Shortly after the ceremony, I received a package from Charles. It was the first draft of the part of the "Peanuts" comic I'm describing, and Charles signed it.That first draft still hangs in my office today. Coincidentally, neither of us was the final winner that year.
In September 1967, I received an emergency call from Cedars-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.Otto had a serious heart attack. The doctor told me outside the ward that Otto's chances of surviving were slim.I walked into the ward and stood by his bed.He was pale, and it seemed to me that the life had been taken from him.It turns out my feelings were wrong.

He beckoned me over and I leaned over him and he said, "I gave Richard my car. I should have sold him." This is his last words to me.
When Season 4 of "Space Fairy" aired, we were followed by the hugely successful one-hour "Rowan and Martin Show."I called NBC president Mort Werner and suggested that we combine the two shows one night.I'd write an episode with characters from The Rowan and Martin Show, and our characters would appear in their episodes.Mott accepted the offer. There used to be a saying in Hollywood that Barbara Eden was not allowed to show her belly button. There are more than a dozen different versions of this matter, but the truth is this:

I wrote the script for an episode of "Hollywood's Brightest Star".Judy Carney, Art Johnson, Gary Owens, George Sklart (Executive Producer of The Rowan & Martin Show) all make appearances on our show. Then George Sklart brought me a script written by the writers of The Show.It opens with Barbara Eden walking down the stairs in Jeanne's costume, with the spotlight on her belly button.I told George I thought such a scene was in bad taste and I refused to cast our actors on The Show. The final result is that people from "Talk Show" appeared in "Space Fairy Love", but our people did not appear on "Talk Show".

"Space Fairy Love" has been on the air for four years, and it is about to enter its fifth year, but we have not yet received an official broadcast license.I got a call from Mort Werner. "I think the marriage of Jeanne and Tony should be arranged." I was flabbergasted, "That would have ruined the show, Mott. What makes Jeanne so attractive is the way Jeanne stays away from her master. Once you get them married, the fun is gone. No It's time to act." "I'm going to get them married." "Mort, there's no point in that. If they..." "Do you still want to air the show?" I fell into a long silence. The other party is threatening me, but this is his TV station, "Is there any room for negotiation?" "No." "I'll arrange their marriage." "Very good. Continue to broadcast next year." When the crew heard the news, they were all terrified. "Businessmen shouldn't interfere with creation," Larry said. The entire crew called Mort Werner, but to no avail. He thinks he's smarter than all of us and he knows what to do to benefit the show. I wrote a wedding scene for the fifth season of Space Fairy. The wedding scene was filmed at Cape Kennedy, and several senior Air Force officials were in attendance.I tried to make the script as lively as possible, but after they got married, their relationship changed and most of the fun was lost.At the end of the fifth year, "Space Fairy Love" stopped broadcasting.Mort Warner single-handedly ruined a hit show. We produced a total of 139 episodes.By the sixth year, 1971, "Space Fairy" began airing on ITV, and it ran for another five years. Now, forty years since its premiere, "Space Fairy" has been rerun many times around the world, bringing laughter to thousands of viewers. In color of course.Columbia is planning to make it into a movie.
During the filming of "Space Fairy Love", I thought of an idea, which I think should be very good. The story is that someone is going to murder a psychiatrist. The key is that he doesn't think anyone will be hostile to him.Still, if he was a psychiatrist worth his salt, he should be able to deduce who the man was and why he was being killed. There is a problem with this idea. It requires an in-depth analysis of human psychology and a deep portrayal of the inner activities of the psychiatrist in order to understand how he found the answer. In my opinion, there is no way to express it through the script.Only in the form of novels can he explain his inner thoughts to readers clearly. But I knew very well that I didn't have the ability to create novels, so I had to give up. Groucho called me to say that there was a musical about the Marx brothers and their mother, Minnie the Children, coming to Broadway at the Empire Theatre. He asked if Joya and I would fly him to New York to see the show.Although I was busy filming TV dramas at the time, I still agreed. We flew to New York and saw the musical - which was fantastic - and attended the cast party afterwards. The next morning, we headed to the airport, planning to head back to Hollywood.Air traffic controllers are on strike. Our planes were already taxiing, and the captain's voice came over the radio announcing that the plane would be delayed an hour because of the strike. We slid back again. Two hours later, the captain announced that there would be a three-hour delay. Groucho called a flight attendant. "Is there anything I can do for you, Mr. Max?" "Is there a priest on the plane?" "I do not know what happened?" "Some people's bodies are already starting to stiffen."
It is generally believed that the great poet TS Eliot was anti-Semitic.On one wall of Groucho's house was a photograph of Eliot. I asked him why, and he said, "Elliot wrote to me asking for my autographed photo. I sent him the photo and he sent it back. He wanted the cigar in the photo." Eliot held Groucho in great esteem, and in his will he asked Groucho to preside over his funeral, which Groucho complied.
Sheki Green was one of the comedians we saw a lot at the famous dinner parties at Groucho's.I once asked Sheki what was the difference between a comedian and a comedian. His answer: "A comedian opens funny doors for you, and a comedian opens doors in funny ways." Shecky is one of the nation's best-known nightclub comedians. What's interesting is that he has no fixed performance program at all, and each of his performances will not be the same.Every time, Shi Shiran stepped onto the stage and gave a forty-five-minute impromptu performance with enthusiasm. We saw Sheki play at the Sands Hotel in Las Vegas one night.Shecky told the audience: "Frank Sinatra was my saviour. Once I came out of the backstage entrance, into the parking lot, and three thugs rushed out and beat me. After a while, Frank said, 'Okay, that's it.'" After the show, we went backstage to Sheki's dressing room. I asked him curiously, "What happened to Sinatra?" "Oh, I had a feud with Frank. I made some jokes about Frank's family the other day. After the show, Frank said, 'No more, Sheki.' Well, you know mine too, I I don't like people telling me what to do. So, the next time I did it, I told more jokes about Frank's family. By the time I was done and I was in the parking lot, these three thugs started beating me up. Finally, Frank said, 'That's it,' and they all ran away."
I first met Frank in 1953, when he was very poor. The contract with the film company expired, the recording contract was cancelled, and no one invited him to attend the event. But with his extraordinary talent, he soon made a comeback. Frank Sinatra always did his own way. There are many sides to him, and you can never predict which side you'll meet next.He will be a warm and generous friend, or a vicious enemy. Sinatra was engaged to the talented dancer and actress Juliette Bowros, who called off the engagement shortly after Juliet revealed the engagement to a reporter. Lyricist Sammy Kahn came to Los Angeles and checked into the Beverly Hills Hotel.Sinatra had Sammy's luggage moved to his home.Sammy Kahn spoke about Sinatra in an interview and soon found her luggage being sent back to the hotel. Frank did not know George C. Scott, but he admired Scott's work. Scott had a heart attack, and Frank arranged and paid for his medical care.Frank is also very generous in his charity work. Frank married and divorced Ava Gardner, but he never quite forgot her. On Frank's birthday, Sands Hotel manager Carl Cohn and I waited for him at his apartment to go out to dinner and celebrate.Ava was filming in Africa at the time. Frank didn't intend to get up. Finally I couldn't help it, "Frank, it's already ten o'clock. Carl and I are going to faint from hunger. What are we waiting for?" "I'm waiting for Ava to call and wish me a happy birthday."
For many years, every Thursday night, a group of us who called ourselves the "Eagle Gang" would take turns meeting in each house and chatting happily for hours. It was the same group of people and their wives each time: Sid Caesar, Steve Allen, Sheki Green, Carl Reiner, Milton Burleigh.Over the years, we have had the joy of watching everyone become successful. These guys were some of the biggest names in comedy, and as time went on, I started to realize that no one was getting any younger.Soon their voices will disappear from this world, as if they never existed. But an idea occurred to me. My method allows everyone to remember the image of these great talents, and at the same time can financially support some universities.I've worked in education before, and I was a national spokesperson for the Literacy Coalition, so I thought it was a great project for me. I suggested this to my group one night. I said, "Guys, I want to get you all together for a play about the future of comedy. I'm going to be the announcer. We're going to be touring colleges and universities across the country and we're going to donate the proceeds from the ticket sales to the colleges." Which of you would like to join?" Everyone started raising their hands.Sid Caesar...Steve Allen...Sheki Green...Karl Reiner... "Great," I said, "I'll arrange the show." I decided to do my first show in Hollywood, as a test run.The City of Beverly Hills is very happy about that. On July 17, 2000, the first "Future of Comedy" symposium was held at the Screenwriters Guild Theater, and there were crowds of spectators. We were warmly welcomed and I felt like the idea would work.Me and Sid, Steve, Sheki, Carl had a lot of fun, and the audience had a blast too. There was endless laughter.Group members also interrupted each other with one-liners from time to time.We did something meaningful and we are all looking forward to the next event. But shortly after that night, fate stopped our progress, and there was no way for us to be together again.Steve Allen died, Sid Caesar was too physically ill to travel long distances, Sheki Green had relationship issues, and Carl Reiner was busy making movies. Can no longer hold events. But I will never forget the kindness of my friends.
In 1970, I made another TV series called Nancy. When a lady and the daughter of the President of the United States went to the farm for vacation, she met a young veterinarian, and the two fell in love and tied the knot. The plot revolves around the conflict between the family lifestyles of these two very different people. I cast three very good leads: Celeste Holm, Rainn Jarrett, John Funk.We took the dailies to NBC and they bought the show. It was a light romantic comedy with a good cast, but it was pulled by the network after seventeen episodes. At that time, "Nancy" was ranked seventeenth on the Nielsen ratings list, which was more than enough to ensure the broadcast of the TV series.Whether it was the White House expressing displeasure, or some kind of political pressure on the network side, I don't know, but one thing is for sure, the cancellation of the film was a big surprise to all of us.
