Chapter 165 Communist Party Activities in Sichuan

The activities of the Communist Party against the rule of the Kuomintang were not exactly the same in every region. For example, in Chengdu, the Communist Party is much more active than in Chongqing. During 1940, severe crop failures in the Chengdu area due to the previous spring's drought led to the usual rice hoarding and accompanying food riots.Regardless of whether the Communists had instigated these riots, Dai Li immediately believed that the Communists were making trouble, which gave him an excuse to order his agents in the Chengdu area to arrest the Communists as soon as they could.During this large-scale search, Luo Shiwen, the leader in charge of the Chengdu Office of the Eighth Route Army and a senior editor of "Xinhua Daily", and Che Yaoxian, an important leader of the Communist Party in Chengdu, were arrested successively. Both were tortured, but neither confessed. Finally they were escorted to Chongqing. The other dozen or so arrested Communist Party leaders were buried alive by Liu Chongpu, the special agent captain of the Chuankang District Military Command.

The mass arrests in Chengdu were an early move by Juntong in Sichuan, and it was intended to show Juntong's effective strength in China throughout the war.In Chongqing itself, however, Dai Li's organization appears to have been less effective in tracking Communist underground activities in the Kuomintang's wartime capital.According to Shen Zui (who kept belittling the Kuomintang’s ability to deal with the CCP for political reasons), the military’s reconnaissance department in Chongqing was very useless from the beginning, because all it could rely on for intelligence was some information from society. The "no-three, no-four" at the bottom, plus some middle- and lower-level people from several democratic parties. How did the Juntong control the activities of figures like Guo Moruo, Tian Han, or Cao Yu?All the military commander can hope for is to keep an eye on them and have its agents review the veracity of intelligence about these prominent social figures from time to time.

But this does not mean that the military command has no achievements in dealing with the Communist Party. At this point, the second united front does not work against them.Shen Zui, the captain of the detective team of the Chongqing Garrison Headquarters, wanted very much to capture the Communists. He was rewarded every time he got what he wanted, such as his assault on the Communists at a small iron factory near Jiangbei. However, regarding the false rumors about the so-called Communist Party activities, the military command has repeatedly self-defeating, and caused innocent people to be implicated for no reason. For another example, once the Presidential Palace repeatedly issued orders, but it turned out that no subversive activities took place.

The main target of military surveillance was the Communist Party's office in Hongyan Village, Hualongqiao. For this reason, the military command set up a special inspection post nearby, which was in charge of Duan Chutian. But Dai Li's people found it difficult to figure out who had gone to the "old nest" of the Communist Party under their noses.Later, the graphic novel "Red Rock" and the resulting film described the incompetence of the KMT's secret agents, while paradoxically showing that the Juntong (and its later "Secret Bureau") was an enemy of the enemy. A brutal and horrific organization responsible for the deaths of countless victims. One of the morals of "Red Rock" is to expose the American supporters of military reunification. They are portrayed as insidious American "special advisers" who hide behind scenes of torture and interrogation, and are determined to "squeeze oil and water out of human bones!" The anti-American message, mixed with confidence in the ultimate victory of the Communist Party, echoed the anti-American upsurge in the Korean War in the early 1950s.As the hero in the novel, Xu Yunfeng said to Mao Renfeng: "Marxism-Leninism has also armed the Communist Party of China and the Chinese people, and will surely destroy all reactionaries, including you spies supported by US imperialism!"
