武士虚荣在死时，也就是切腹之时。一次完美的切腹将会成为描述自己是怎样一个男人的最有力表达。所以在武士家中，男子元服之前，家人便会教他切腹之法，以防万一。 这并不是说日本人便有轻生的传统。日本人努力控制着人类最难克服的对死亡的恐惧，超脱于生死，并试图因此创造一种精神的紧张、美和真正的自由。在这一点上来说，切腹仅仅是这种精神的一种体现，但是在其背后，有这个国家屹立于世界文化史上大的特殊的精神文化存在。姑且不论其是非，只要知道有这么一种文化就可以了。 将武士的切腹上升到“美”的高度，最多的例子在战国时代和幕末，德川中期的太平盛世时期很少见，那时有一种叫扇腹的做法。切腹人用扇子代替短刀顶在肚子上，然后让介错人将头砍下。据说就连元禄时期的赤穗浪人，甚至都有人不知道切腹的方法，而向人请教。但是，在战国和幕末这样的激荡时代，男人往往试图通过某种方式来表现自己作为一个男人的荣耀。这些时代有无数的武士切腹，他们都做得非常完美。 上士园村新作也受到了与小南同样的处罚。乡士岛村寿之助、安冈觉之助、小畑孙三郎、森田金三郎、山本喜三之进与河野万寿弥等人被判永远监禁。乡士村田忠三郎、久松喜代马、冈本次郎和足轻冈田以藏被斩首。 以藏罪最重，他的首级被挂在吉田东洋被暗杀的雁切河岸示众。 除了招供的以藏，其他死者在维新之后都得到了追封。
