Chapter 26 3. Buddhism turned out to be so profound and interesting

Yang Du 唐浩明 9601Words 2018-03-16
On the afternoon of the 12th, Jichan returned to Dongzhou Academy from Huayao Temple.Yang Du explained the reason to Wang Kaiyun and asked his husband to grant him a one-month leave.Wang Kaiyun said with a smile: "Well, at this time, you should accumulate some shame in front of the Buddha, and you will be blessed by the Buddha in the future." The next day, Yang Du set off with Jichan. They went north on a small steamer. The large and small piers along the way, including Changsha, do not go ashore. On the boat, Jichan always closed his eyes and meditated, with both hands alternately fiddling with the rosary beads on his chest, chanting words. All the people in the cabin were overwhelmed by his Buddhist serenity, and all cast admiring eyes on him.Yang Du is in stark contrast. He opened the "Secret History of the Great Zhou" for a while, went to the deck for a while, looked at the scenery on both sides of the strait, talked and laughed happily with strangers on the same boat, and recited Tang and Song poems gently. He is enthusiastic and active, and rarely sits quietly.

They got off the small steamer at Jinggang, then changed into a small wooden boat, and headed back westward. After shaking all day and night, we arrived at Shuangchakou the next morning.Shuangchakou is the confluence of two small rivers. The water is too shallow for boating, so I went ashore and walked.Weishan is on the north side of Shuangchakou. After lunch, Jichan said: "Wei Mountain is still 120 miles away from Shuangchakou. Let's take some dry food with us. We won't leave the shop tonight. Let's walk slowly and arrive at Miyin Temple tomorrow morning." Can you bear to walk at night?"

Yang Du said: "Master, don't look at me as a scholar. During the years in Guide Town, under the supervision of my uncle, I practiced martial arts solidly for several years. I can come and go with swords, guns and sticks, punches and kicks. What does the sky think of night roads!" "Oh!" Ji Chan said in amazement, "I don't see that you have martial arts, I thought you had no strength to restrain a chicken!" The two talked and laughed, and started the journey of a hundred miles. It was late autumn, and the vines in the hills of central Hunan turned yellow, the maple leaves were dyed red, and the undulating hills were covered with a seven-color coat of red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple. Sometimes the trees in front and behind the farmhouse were covered with knots. Fruit to be picked.Half of the rice in the field has been harvested, and the straw has been piled up into a stack with a pointed top and a round bottom. Groups of chickens and ducks around the stack are vying for the remaining grains. The rice that has not been harvested, the golden ears of grain bend down and hang down, making people full of joy when they see it.In the blue sky, wild geese could occasionally be seen flying south, sending a clear cry from mid-air to the world. In the thatch piles by the roadside, there are often wild rabbits running away like arrows in fright. In the small bushes in the distance, it is easy to see fat pheasants flying up and down.Su Dongpo said: "You must remember the good times of the year, the most orange-yellow and orange-green times." If you don't explore the depths of life, in the eyes of two pedestrians on the road, these two poems by Lay Dongpo can't be recited at all. not bad.

While walking, enjoy the autumn scenery. After walking for more than ten miles in this way, Yang Du suddenly remembered that going to Miyin Temple this time was not an ordinary way of burning incense and worshiping Buddha, or paying tribute to historical sites, but to record the research experience of Weiyang sect for Elder Jue Huan, but he not only Not to mention the understanding of the Weiyang sect, but even the general knowledge of Buddhism, how to record and organize it?In the end, wouldn't it be a disappointment to Jichan's good intentions, and damage to his own reputation.Trekking for hundreds of miles, there is plenty of time, why not take advantage of this time to ask the mage for advice, and it can relieve fatigue.

"It's not difficult. With Mr. Xizi's wisdom, a little bit is enough." When Yang Du expressed his concerns, Jichan replied lightly and deftly. "Then I will ask the mage for advice." "I don't dare to take the word to ask for advice. If you have any questions, just say it and give me an answer based on what I know." Ji Chan walks without counting his rosary beads. Although he is nearly fifty years old, his legs are strong and powerful, and he climbs mountains and wades like walking on flat ground.Yang Du looked at his sitting posture on the boat and the road in front of him, and remembered the secrets of cultivators that his uncle often said many years ago: sit like a bell, lie like a bow, stand like a pine, and walk like the wind.He felt that this monk behaved exactly like that.

"Master, let's start with the Weiyang sect." "Weiyang Sect is a branch of Zen Buddhism, and Zen Buddhism is a sect that emerged after Buddhism was introduced to China. To explain this process clearly, we have to start with the birth of Buddhism." In order to walk side by side with Yang Du , Jichan intentionally slowed down his pace. "That's great." Yang Du said happily. "When I was young, I saw my mother burn incense and beat her son to worship Bodhisattva. I asked her what a Buddha is, but she didn't understand at all. Since I left home for Guide, I have also I have been to Dahewai and Bianluo, and wherever I go, I also like to visit temples and see Bodhisattvas, but that is mostly driven by curiosity. When it comes to Buddhism, it can be said that you don’t know anything about it. This time, you can get the true knowledge of Buddhism from the master, that’s really lucky.”

Jichan looked straight at Yang Du and said: "Fate is the most talked about word in Buddhism. It is fate that you and I met. This time, we went to Miyin Temple together to record the genealogy evolution theory of the Weiyang sect of Elder Jue Huan. It is a great fate. These days, I have observed Mr. carefully. You had the root of wisdom in the previous life, and you have the spirituality in this life. Once you practice, you can achieve the right result." Yang Du saw that Ji Chan's words were so interesting, he couldn't help laughing, thinking to himself that the study of emperors and Buddhist classics had nothing to do with each other. Could it be that this monk is lying to me and tempting me to be his fellow disciple? Then he pretended to say: "Master, how about I shave with you at Miyin Temple this time?"

Ji Chan sternly said: "Amitabha! Monks don't like people who tell lies. Right now, Mr. Duan's fate is as heavy as a mountain, so why talk about shaving and becoming a monk! I just said that if you become a monk, you can achieve a good result, but it is by no means to persuade you to become a monk. In case one day in the future, Mr. has gone through a lot of hardships and suffered thousands of setbacks. At that time, you might as well go to Buddhism to find a quiet place. If the poor monk is still alive, he must seek liberation for Mr. " After Yang Du heard this, a shadow suddenly cast over his heart, so he remained silent.Seeing this, Ji Chan said with a smile: "Xizi, the poor monk looks at your complexion, you will have good luck within three years, and you will become famous in one fell swoop and shake the world."

Yang Du was overjoyed, and quickly asked: "According to what the master said, can I be the number one scholar?" Ji Chan thought, saying that his mortal relationship is as heavy as a mountain is true, and said: "Exactly. Let's not talk about this today, let's talk about Buddhism!" While talking, two women came across. One was about sixty years old, with gray and disheveled hair, like a bird's nest on a dead tree branch, thin and stooped, holding a bamboo pole in his hand. The other was in his thirties, wearing old black clothes, with a blue cotton cloth on a white background wrapped around his head. The middle-aged woman knelt down on her knees every few steps, touched her forehead to the ground, then stood up, walked a few more steps, and knelt down to touch the ground again.Yang Du felt very strange. Looking at the monk, he saw a satisfied smile on his face.Slowly approached.Yang Du saw that the two women were carrying a yellow cloth bag on their chests, and four black characters were printed on the bag: return after offering incense. He understood that this was the person who came back from burning incense and worshiping the Bodhisattva.I also saw two thick patches on the knees of the kneeling woman. The patch was frayed again and covered with dirt and grass clippings.Seeing Jichan approaching, the two women hurried out of the way and said, "Great Elder." Then they took out two copper coins from the cloth bag and handed them out with both hands.

The monk clasped his hands together, bent down and said, "Thank you Tanyue, please take it back, the poor monk is grateful." The old woman said: "Elder, don't think too little, our family is poor, we only have ten copper coins in total, and we have to hurry, please accept it." "Amitabha! Poor monks have never been given alms, please take it back." Seeing that the monk insisted on not accepting it, the old woman had no choice but to put the two copper coins into a cloth pocket. Yang Du asked, "Where do you burn incense?" "From Miyin Temple." The middle-aged woman replied.

Yang Du thought, how long would it take for them to kneel down and walk like this?He asked, "How many days have you been away?" "Three days." "Aren't you tired walking and kneeling like this?" "Not tired." The woman answered readily. "She is burning incense for my mother. After receiving this incense, my mother's soul will be safe in the underworld. She is happy in her heart, so she won't be tired." The old woman rushed to answer. Yang Du looked at the middle-aged woman and saw that she had a smile on her face, and she really didn't look tired. He asked curiously again: "Do you burn incense like this every year?" "She has been burning for three years. In the first year, my mother just died, and she prayed every three steps. In the second year, I prayed every five steps. This year is the third year, and I prayed every seven steps. Next year, I will not pray." The woman answered on her behalf. "So what about you old man, who are you burning incense for?" Yang Du asked again. "I am Sun Yazi. Sun Yazi is five years old and suffers from a lot of illnesses. I ask Bodhisattva to bless him with no illness or pain." Yang Du nodded, and asked again: "Where is your home, and how far is it?" "It's not far, it's at Bairuopu." The middle-aged woman replied. Yang Du thought to himself, there are at least a hundred miles left in the Bairuo shop, and they will have to worship for three or four days before they can get home! After talking a few more gossips, they went their separate ways. The monk said to Yang Du: "They are burning incense in the evening class. If it were two months ago, before and after the Ghost Festival, there would be an endless stream of good men and women offering incense along the way." Yang Du sighed and said, "Kneel at three steps, bow at five steps, such sincerity is hard to come by!" The monk said: "Yes, sincerity is the most important thing in our Buddhist school. This is what is meant by the so-called worshiping Buddha with sincerity. Alright, let's continue talking about Buddhism!" "Okay, listen respectfully to the mage." "To talk about Buddhism, we must first clarify the meaning of the word 'Buddha'." Ji Chan slowly introduced the opening remarks. "Exactly." Yang Du became interested all of a sudden. "Since I was a child, I have heard people talking about Buddha, Buddha, and no one can explain clearly what Buddha means." Jichan explained solemnly: "Buddha, that is, Buddha, this is the transliteration of Sanskrit in ancient Tianzhu. If it is translated according to the meaning, it should be translated as wise man." "So, the Buddha is the smartest person!" Yang Du responded quickly. "Yes, you can say that." The monk nodded and said, "But it is different from the so-called smart people. It includes three aspects: one is that the Buddha can know everything, and the other is that the Buddha can make others like him. Know everything, and the third is that the wisdom of the Buddha is the highest and beyond reproach. In Buddhism, it is often said that the enlightenment, equal enlightenment, and perfect enlightenment refer to this state." "No wonder people pay homage to Buddha." Yang Du sighed. "The Buddha is Sakyamuni, named Siddhartha. He was born in Kapilavastu in the northern part of the ancient Tianzhu Kingdom more than 2,400 years ago. Life, including human beings, is short and impermanent, and he has to suffer from birth, old age, sickness and death. He thought to himself, where is the cause of these pains? He was determined to find a way to solve the pain. At the age of 29, Buddha secretly left the capital , became a monk to practice Taoism, and searched for famous teachers, but found nothing. After six years of hard practice, he finally attained the Tao under the Bodhi tree one day. He realized the way to get rid of the suffering in the world." "What method?" Yang Du asked anxiously. "Don't worry, this is not something that can be explained in one sentence. The entire branch of Buddhism, thousands of volumes of Buddhist scriptures talk about this method of liberation. I will explain it in detail later." A gust of autumn wind blew from the valley, and Yang Du felt a little chill. He felt as if he had been led to the threshold of Buddhism by a mage, and he could enter the hall with just one step between his legs. "After the Buddha became enlightened, he made up his mind to let all living beings in the world be enlightened, so he began to preach hard. He first preached the Four Noble Truths, Twelve Causes, Eightfold Paths, and Three Seals to Mobati and other five people in Sarnath." Yang Du had never heard of the series of Buddhist content that the monk said, and couldn't understand it at all. He couldn't help asking: "Master, what are the Four Noble Truths, the Twelve Causes and Conditions, the Eightfold Path, and the Three Seals?" Ji Chan smiled and said: "To explain clearly, three days and three nights are not enough, let me just say a few words. The Four Noble Truths are suffering, origin, cessation, and Tao. The two causes, the consciousness, name and form, six entrances, touch, and the five fruits of receiving and love, grasping, and three causes in the present world, plus the two effects of birth, old age and death in the future life, together constitute twelve karmic conditions. The Eightfold Path, namely Right View, Right Thinking, Right Speech, Right Karma, Right Livelihood, Right Effort, Right Mindfulness, Right Concentration, a total of Eight Righteousnesses. The Three Dharma Seals are the three standards of impermanence of all actions, non-self of all dharmas, and tranquility of Nirvana.” Since Yang Du received the books with his hair tied up, the extremely difficult words and principles, including the "Book of Books", have not troubled him, but now when he heard the monk talk about these Buddhist principles, he heard more and more mysterious, as if Falling into the cloud and mist for five miles, not seeing the sky, not touching the ground, feeling inexplicable and incomprehensible, just now I thought I could step into the threshold, enter the hall and enter the house, but I don't know that this step is so difficult! He was embarrassed to ask again, so he had to bite the bullet and listen. "After listening to the Buddha's preaching, these five people were convinced and converted together. They were the first five monks. Later, they accepted Ananda, Kasyapa and other ten disciples. In the end, his disciples were innumerable. After the Buddha passed away, The doctrine of Buddhism was widely spread in ancient Tianzhu, and became the most prominent knowledge, which is Buddhism. Slowly, Buddhism also spread to our middle land." "I saw the White Horse Temple in Luoyang. It is said that the white horses in the Eastern Han Dynasty brought Buddhist scriptures from the ancient Tianzhu Kingdom. Master, did Buddhism spread to China during the Eastern Han Dynasty?" "Exactly. After Buddhism was introduced to China, there were many sects due to differences in the interpretation of the scriptures and the methods of practice. The most famous ones are the Pure Land School, the Tiantai School, the Law School, the Sanlun School, the Faxiang School, the Xianshou School, Zen and other sects declined day by day, but Zen continued to keep its incense burning and gradually became the authentic school of Chinese Buddhism. The Weiyang sect studied by Elder Jue Huan is a major sect of Zen.” Yang Du heard the names of so many sects all at once, and knew that he could not understand them all in one day. The most urgent thing to do was to understand Zen and Weiyang Sect, so he said: "Let the master explain Zen and Weiyang Sect first." , other sects, after arriving at Miyin Temple, listen to the master's teaching." "What I'm going to tell you is mainly about Zen." Master Jichan looked up and said, "Let's sit down first, and Leigong Ridge is ahead, and we have already traveled fifty miles." Only then did Yang Du notice that the sky was getting dark. Listening to the master's lecture on Buddhism, before he knew it, it was dusk and half of the journey of a hundred miles had gone. From the cloth bundle, the mage took out a few tung leaf glutinous rice cakes, a pack of dried lotus leaves and pickled radishes, and took out a bamboo tube, which contained spring water. The two chose a clean sandy place, sat cross-legged, and ate and drank slowly. The tung leaf cake is fragrant and delicious, and the fragrant dried radish is also sweet.Yang Du felt that the topping in the field was more interesting than the big restaurants in the capital. After dinner, it was completely dark.Fortunately, it was mid-September, and a full moon had already risen in the east. The autumn is crisp, the night sky is cloudless, and the moon looks extraordinarily bright and bright. The clear light shines on the hills and fields, like a thin veil covering the world, and the far and near scenes are covered with a layer of magical atmosphere. The world seems to have no evils such as fighting, framing, strife, cruelty, etc. It has always been a peaceful and friendly paradise; it also seems that there is no pain of birth, old age, sickness and death, and it has always been a paradise of happiness and peace. The breeze, the bright moon, the monks, and Buddhism, all these constitute an extremely comfortable and quiet atmosphere, and turn everything in front of you into an illusory, ethereal and cool place, as if you have come to the Western Paradise and become a golden arhat. .The inheritor of the Emperor's School who loves fantasy and is full of poetic temperament feels that the night scene at this time is the most beautiful and comfortable. "What is Zen? Zen is the abbreviation of the Sanskrit word 'Zhana', which translates to meditation." As he continued on his way, the monk picked up the topic before the meal. "Meditation means concentrating on one subject and thinking quietly. As it is said in "Yogi's Land Theory", those who meditate, focus on one object, think quietly, and are thinking about it. When the mind is calm and focused, you can think deeply about the meaning .” Yang Du had heard a series of Buddhist names mentioned by the monk before, and he felt a little far-fetched. After Zen was interpreted by the master as "quiet consideration", he immediately understood it and expressed his deep approval. His own experience is too much. When reading, only when the mind is peaceful can one read deeply and understand thoroughly, and if one is distracted, one will not know what the ancients said.No wonder Zen can flourish forever, is it because its theories are easy to understand? "The first ancestor of Zen is Bodhidharma, a native of ancient Tianzhu. He traveled to China in the era of Emperor Wu of Liang. Emperor Wu of Liang was a man who believed in Buddhism. Redeem once. In the name of Emperor Wudi Mudama, I invited him to Jinling, and asked him respectfully, since I came to the throne, I have built temples, written scriptures, and ordained monks. How much merit do I have by doing this? Damo replied, There is no merit. Emperor Wu was taken aback, and asked again, why there is no merit? Bodhidharma replied, this is just a small fruit of human beings and heaven. What? Bodhidharma replied, pure wisdom is perfect, body is white and empty, such merits and virtues should not be sought in the world. Emperor Wu still did not understand, so he asked again: How can it be regarded as the first meaning of the holy truth. Bodhidharma replied, there is no sage. A series of denials made Emperor Wu feel a little angry, so he asked, do you know who I am? Bodhidharma replied, no. Along the Yangtze River, but seeing the wide surface of the river and the rapid current, Bodhidharma broke off a reed by the river, blew on it, put it in the water, then stepped on the reed stalk, crossed the Yangtze River, went north to the Central Plains, and came to Songshan Mountain Shaolin Temple." Yang Du was enthralled.Although he didn't fully understand the dialogue between Bodhidharma and Emperor Wu of Liang, he understood it roughly, and it was not as profound and obscure as the monk said before. He especially admired Bodhidharma's courage to defy the emperor! If there is no profound Taoism, how can there be such a shocking move? "After Bodhidharma came to Shaolin Temple, he didn't pay homage to the Buddha like ordinary eminent monks. He just sat in meditation facing the stone wall for many years. In this way, he practiced in meditation, facing the wall for ten years, and finally entered the meditation and enlightened wisdom, and saw the nature clearly. He became an eminent monk who attained the Tao and was respected by the monks of Shaolin Temple, and thus founded Zen. When Bodhidharma passed away, he passed on the kapok cassock and alms bowl brought from Tianzhu to his disciple Huike, and at the same time passed to him four volumes of the Lenga Sutra. , there are no other scriptures. Huike respected Bodhidharma as the first ancestor, and he was the second ancestor. Later, Huike passed it on to his disciple Sengcan, and Sengcan was the third ancestor. Sengcan passed it on to Daoxin as the fourth ancestor. Daoxin passed on Hongren, the Fifth Patriarch. At that time, Hongren gathered disciples to give lectures in Huangmei Fengmu Mountain. There were more than 700 disciples. The focus of his lectures was no longer on the "Langa Sutra", but on the "Diamond Sutra". The name of Hongren's high-level disciple His name was Shenxiu. In his later years, Hongren planned to pass on the mantle to Shenxiu, and ordered Shenxiu to recite a verse to explain his understanding of the purpose of Zen. Shenxiu recited a verse in public: The body is a bodhi tree, and the heart is like a mirror stand. Always wipe it diligently, Do not stir up dust." When Yang Du first heard these four lines of gatha, he thought it was too simple. After repeating it twice, he felt that there was a lot of wit in it, and he couldn't help but admire Shenxiu's apt metaphor. While thinking secretly, unexpectedly the monk's words took a sharp turn. "At that time, Hongren was sitting on the Dharma throne. He listened to Shenxiu's gatha, and remained silent for a long time. At this time, a monk dressed as a convict monk came in from the back door and said to Hongren, please allow me to read a few verses too. Hongren didn’t know him, so he asked him what he did. The monk replied, rice-pulsing monk. When all the monks saw that this rice-pulsing monk dared to grab the mantle of the first seat, they all laughed at him. Read it! The rice pounding monk said calmly: Bodhi does not have a tree, and a bright mirror is not a stand. There is nothing in the first place, where can the dust be gathered? Hongren was very surprised when he heard it, and said: Good read, Let this mantle be passed on to you!" Yang Du was also amazed by these four lines of gatha, and thought to himself, this is like pulling the bottom out of a pot, amazing! It turns out that there is nothing left, so how can there be dust?Is this what Zen Buddhism believes in? "So Hongren took him to the abbot and said to him, although your gatha is good, but you still haven't seen the nature, let me explain the Diamond Sutra to you! The rice pounding monk sat upright and listened without saying a word. When Hongren spoke When it came to "There should be nowhere to live, but to give birth to its heart", the monk Chongmi suddenly realized, and recited a few verses casually: When the self-nature is originally quiet; , is self-sufficient; when the self-nature is not shaken; when the self-nature is born, all dharmas can be produced. After hearing this, Hongren was overjoyed, so he opened the water and land Taoist field, and passed the mantle to this rice-pounding monk. This person is the sixth patriarch Huineng. Huineng had more than sixty disciples, the most outstanding of which were Huairang from Nanyue, Xingsi from Qingyuan, Shenhui from Heze, and Xuanjue from Yongjia. The three schools of Caodong, Yunmen, and Fayan formed under the Qingyuan lineage, known as the Five Schools. The Linji School formed the Huanglong School and the Yangqi School in the Song Dynasty. These are collectively known as the Five Schools and Seven Schools of Zen." There was not a single cloud in the sky, the moon became brighter, and three roads appeared under my feet. There is an avenue in the middle, a stone road on the left, and a winding path on the right, leading to the foot of the mountain. Yang Du asked, "Master, which way shall we go?" Jichan replied: "Take the small path on the right, the mountain is Dawei Mountain, and Miyin Temple is in Dawei Mountain." "Isn't that coming soon?" Yang Duxi said. "Dawei Mountain is very big. It is said that it is in the mountain, but it is actually far away!" Just as Yang Du was about to step to the right, suddenly a big snake jumped out of the grass. The snake's feet were more than ten feet long and as thick as a giant bamboo. Under the moonlight, its two golden eyes were like two scorching fires.Yang Du stopped instinctively. But the monk regarded it as nothing, and shouted: "You beast, don't make way for this old man!" Strange to say, the snake looked at the two passers-by, and then slid towards the opposite grain field without making a sound, as if it knew that magic was no match for righteousness.Yang Du looked at this scene and smiled knowingly. "Now let's talk about the Weiyang sect alone." During the climb, the monk continued his lecture on the history of Buddhism in China. "The Miyin Temple we went to is the birthplace of the Weiyang Sect, that is, the ancestral court. The founder of the Weiyang Sect, Elder Lingyou, was from Fuzhou in the Tang Dynasty. His common surname was Zhao. He became a monk at the age of fifteen. Possessing sufficient precepts, he extensively studied Mahayana and Hinayana scriptures. At the age of 23, he went to Jiangxi to visit Baizhang Huaihai. Huaihai was Huairang's reincarnated disciple. Huaihai praised him at first sight and placed him at the head of the study. One day, Huaihai Hai said to him, go and poke the stove to see if there is any fire? Lingyou fiddled a few times and said, there is no fire. Huaihai went down from the lecture to poke it himself, poke it deep, and poke out a little spark. Huaihai pointed Looking at Mars, he said to Lingyou, "Isn't this fire? Lingyou is ashamed. Huaihai used this to inspire him. You didn't turn on the fire before, but you went astray temporarily. It is said in the Buddhist scriptures, 'Enlightened is the same as unenlightened, and you can't do it if you don't have the heart'." As long as you don’t have vain, sagely, and other minds, your mind is self-sufficient. If you understand this truth today, you should protect yourself well in the future.” Yang Du thought to himself: such a profound life principle can be derived from the matter of searching for Mars, the Buddhist patriarchs are really good at taking things as examples and making the best use of the situation. In this point, even Master Xiangqi can't compare. "One day, a Dumu Tutuo who understood astronomy, geography, fate, and yin and yang came to the temple. Dumu Tutuo told Huaihai that Dawei Mountain in Ningxiang is a grand place with 1,500 people. Huaihai said, Can the old monk go there? Dumu Toutuo said, "Wei Mountain is a mountain of meat, and the monks are bone men. The old monk lives there, and the number of disciples will be less than a thousand." Huaihai said to Du Mu Toutuo, my disciples, look Who can go? Dumu Tutuo looked at all the monks in the temple and shook his head. Finally, he saw Lingyou and said, "This person can go. The monks refused to accept it, and asked why he could go and we couldn't?" Huaihai said, Forget it, let’s take the test once, and whoever does well in the test will go. So he casually pointed to the clean bottle under the seat and asked the monks, this thing can’t be called a clean bottle, what can you call it again? Some of the monks answered that it was called porcelain. Jar, some answered Watan, Huaihai didn’t nod, and turned to Lingyou. Lingyou didn’t say anything, but stepped forward and kicked the Jingping down, everyone was shocked. Huaihai laughed and said, you all lose I gave it to him. So Lingyou went to Weishan." Yang Du also laughed. He thought, this Zen exam is so unique, and Lingyou's exam is so unexpected, it's really an interesting talk outside Fang, not known to Fang insiders! "Lingyou arrived at Weishan Mountain. It turned out that there were high mountains and deep forests, and it was deserted. He finally found a flat land that could accommodate 1,500 people in the future, but how could he build a temple by himself! Lingyou then practiced and preached in the cave of Weishan Mountain. , the reputation spread far and wide, and was known by Pei Xiu, the Jiedu envoy of Tanzhou. Pei Xiu came to visit and knew that his Buddhism was unfathomable, so he helped him build a temple. In the ninth year of Tang Dazhong, the temple was built and named Miyin Temple. Sure enough, a thousand or five hundred monks gathered, and everyone called it Shifang Miyin Temple. Lingyou announced the purpose of "restoring thoughts to the fullest, living in nature, unambiguous things, and the true Buddha". It is a great development of Zen's sudden enlightenment. Lingyou said to his disciples in his later years that after I die, I will turn into a water-gun ox at the foot of the mountain. On the left flank of the ox, there are five characters of "Weishan monk Lingyou". You see When you see the water gun ox, you see me. I am called Weishan monk now, and I will be called water gun bull in the future. What do you think I am? The disciples don’t know how to answer.” Yang Du suddenly remembered the allusion of Zhuang Zhou's dream of a butterfly, and hurriedly said: "I can answer, the monk of Weishan is the water gun ox, and the water gun is the monk of Weishan." The monk smiled and said, "Your answer is the same as no answer." Yang Du was poured a spoonful of cold water, and he understood in his heart that Buddhism and Taoism are not the same school, how can Taoism be used to explain Buddhism! The monk didn't need the answer from the layman, he continued on his own: "Later Lingyou died, and his number one disciple, Huiji, spread the theory of Lingyou in Yangshan, Jiangxi, and there were many disciples, so everyone called this sect Wei Yang school. The Wei Yang school was very popular in the Tang Dynasty. Later, Huiji was passed on to Guangmu, and Guangmu was passed on like a treasure, like a treasure passed on to Zhensui. It is the legal system after Zhenshen, so his merits are very great." Speaking of this, the monk suddenly remembered something and asked Yang Du: "Xizi, have you seen the play "Legend of the White Snake"?" Wei Yangzong said it well, why did he suddenly bring up "Legend of the White Snake"?Yang Du felt strange, and replied casually: "I have seen it." "Then you must know that there is a monk Fahai in the play?" "I know." Yang Du replied inexplicably. "Do you know who this Fa Hai is?" "have no idea." "He is the son of Pei Xiu, the Jiedu envoy of Tanzhou who assisted Lingyou in building the temple." "Really?" Yang Du was shocked, "I always thought he was a fabricated character!" The monk smiled and said: "Pei Xiu admired Lingyou's Taoism, so he asked his son to become a monk and worship Lingyou as his teacher. Lingyou named Mr. Pei a monk named Fahai. Fahai is very intelligent, and he soon became a close friend. An outstanding monk in Yin Temple. Lingyou sent him to preach in the southeast area. He took a fancy to a piece of land on the edge of the Yangtze River outside Zhenjiang City. He thought it was a good place to build a temple, so he called people to break the ground. The temple was half built, and there was no money left. , Fahai asked the Buddha to bless him. A few days later, he accidentally dug up a jar of gold in the vegetable garden. Fahai was overjoyed and used this jar of gold to build a temple. In order to thank the Buddha for his gift, he named the temple Jinshan Temple." "Oh!" Yang Du's interest greatly increased, "In this way, it is true that the white lady was pressed under the Leifeng Pagoda." "That's not true." The monk categorically denied, "Because Fahai is very famous in Jiangsu and Zhejiang, the people who made up the story just dragged him here to make the story seem real." "I don't think it's true." Yang Du felt relieved, "How could a well-educated eminent monk break up a good marriage and put such a beautiful woman under the brick pagoda!" Hearing Yang Du's emotion, the monk just smiled and didn't make a sound. The bright moon has already set in the west, the night wind has turned into morning mist, and after a journey of more than 80 miles, Buddhism has spread to China, and then divided into different sects in China, until the formation of Weiyang School, this complicated evolution, It was also roughly finished by Jichan.Yang Du has already sketched out the outline of this evolution history in his heart. He admired Master Jichan's profound Buddhist knowledge very much, and even more admired his ability to cut out the complicated and simplify it. After a few hours of narration, he actually introduced the development history of Buddhism in China in the past two thousand years so concisely and clearly.Because of the extraordinary actions of Zhuangyou Wuyue, he admired him as a man, and admired his talent because of his more than a thousand poems. From yesterday to this morning, he saw Yuan Yi's knowledge through his profound Buddhist knowledge. He was awe-stricken by Bazhiduo, and thus developed a strong affection for Buddhism. "Master, people in the world say that Buddhist classics are mysterious and difficult to understand, is that true?" Yang Du wanted to use this month to read some Buddhist scriptures in Miyin Temple, so he used this question to throw stones to find the way. "There are also scriptures that are difficult to understand. You have to study for ten or eight years to get their will, but most of the content is easy to understand, just like telling a story." "Really? You tell me two." "Okay, I'll just say two things." The monk thought for a moment and said, "There is a story like this. A kitten was looking for food alone for the first time. It asked the mother cat, what food do I want to find?" The mother cat said, don't worry, people will teach you, you will know when you go out. The kitten thought, how can people teach me? Although it doubted, it still came out of the nest. Walked into a kitchen and heard the owner Take care of the servants: the fish should be covered, the stone should be pressed, the meat should be locked in the cupboard, and the steamed buns should be put in the cage drawer. These are cats’ favorite food. You have to be careful. So the kitten knows, steamed steamed buns with fish and meat All delicious food." This little story is so simple that even a three-year-old child can understand it.Yang Du was about to criticize a few words, but suddenly realized that the meaning of this story does not seem to be simple. It at least vaguely tells people that the evil thoughts in the world come from the mutual inspiration of human beings. If you do some in-depth thinking, you can think of more and more. "This story is interesting, which classic is it from?" "From the "On the Great Adornment." The monk replied, "Let me tell you one more thing. There is such a thing in the "Miscellaneous Metaphors". Once upon a time, a carpenter and a painter were good friends. The painter said to the carpenter , I will give you a hundred taels of silver, and you help me find a wife. The carpenter took the money, but split it into a woman with wood, who could move her hands and feet. At that time, she tricked the painter. The next day, the painter knew that he had been fooled. So he drew a picture of himself hanging himself and hung it in the carpenter's room. The carpenter came back in the middle of the night, and when he saw it, he fainted from fright and was ill for more than ten days. Later, the two found out that they had both eaten because they lied to each other. It was a loss, so I shook hands and said yes, and I will stop doing deceitful things." The universality and depth of this story could not be more clear.Yang Du thought that the Buddhist scriptures can use such simple stories to embody profound truths, so as to warn people, persuade people, and extradite people. No wonder it can gain the belief of many people, and its incense has not faded for more than two thousand years. "Okay, let's not talk about it, the Miyin Temple is ahead, let's sit down and have a good rest, and then enter the mountain gate at dawn!" Looking along the monk's finger, he saw that there seemed to be many large and small houses indistinctly not far away. The long journey of six or seven hours seemed to pass unknowingly.Looking at the Miyin Temple in the distant morning light, Yang Du said in his heart: "Buddhism is so profound and interesting!"
