Chapter 53 A thank you card to the citizens of Chongqing

Usually, the day before a foreign visit, I would be busy preparing relevant materials of the main people I will meet, current data of the destination I visited, and thank you gifts for those who need to be thanked. But the day before my visit to China in March 2005, I prepared one more item and put it deep in the suitcase. This was a thank you card to give to the citizens of Chongqing. The purpose of this visit is to have an in-depth discussion with the Chinese leadership on the stalemate issue of North Korea's nuclear weapons, and to confirm with my own eyes the status quo of China's western development.

I ordered the secretary's office to arrange the itinerary of visiting Chongqing into the itinerary of visiting China, and the secretary's office was very surprised. In the short five-day visit itinerary, there are already a lot of people to meet, and you have to take multiple plane transfers. How could Chongqing suddenly appear. In Chongqing, the last interim government office building of the Republic of Korea remains. Although Shanghai is the first place to think of when mentioning the interim government, Chongqing actually occupies an important page in the history of the independence movement. After Martyr Yin Fengji’s charitable act in Hongkou Park in 1932, our provisional government fled for 13,000 miles from Hangzhou, Changsha, Guangzhou to Liuzhou in order to avoid the encirclement and suppression by Japan, and finally settled in Chongqing in 1940.Until liberation, Chongqing played an important role as the seat of the provisional government. The founding of the Korean Restoration Army, the declaration of war against Japan, the entry of the Indian and Burma fronts into the war, the promotion of the US Office of Strategic Intelligence's domestic offensive plan, etc. If Shanghai was the first heyday of the independence movement, the Chongqing era can be hailed as the second heyday.

When the provisional government was in Chongqing, in order to avoid the bombing attacks of the Japanese government, it moved a total of four times. The Lianhuachi No. 38 we visited is the fourth and last office building of the Provisional Government. On the day of visiting the well-preserved Lianhuachi office building, it was still raining in Chongqing.Located at the confluence of the Yangtze River and the Jialing River, Chongqing is known as the city of water and the city of fog. It is said that most of the days of the year are shrouded in thick fog, and there are not many opportunities to see the sun.Just like the saying "the second enemy of the provisional government is the fog", our compatriots in this place had to fight against the air mixed with poisonous soot and fog every day. At that time, they could only eat white rice with salt water Bean Sprout, living such a hard life, also suffers from the foggy and humid climate of Chongqing. In the end, more than 80 of the 300 compatriots died of lung disease.

After arriving at the Chongqing Provisional Government Office Building, where the martyrs burned their souls, I found that the small buildings around the office building were crowded with hundreds of Chongqing citizens on each floor, applauding warmly to welcome the arrival of our group, which was completely beyond my expectation.

In front of the bronze statue of Mr. Jin Jiu in the office building of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in Chongqing.
Lianhuachi No. 38, the last office building of the Chongqing Provisional Government, is surrounded by many high-rise buildings and modern apartments. After we got out of the car, we climbed up the steep stairs and saw a plaque that read "Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea".The office building consists of five small-scale buildings with two to three floors. After entering the exhibition hall of the main building, you will see the Taiji flag used by the provisional government at that time and the bronze bust of Mr. Jin Jiu.A group of us presented flowers to the bronze statue and paid our respects in silence.Suddenly there was a surge in my throat, and I immediately remembered the patriotic martyrs who defended the motherland at that time. They were driven away by the Japanese army every day, plagued by illness, and fought hard in the harsh environment.

Entering Mr. Jin Jiu's office, the first thing you see is the robes worn by Mr. Jin placed next to the closet, as well as a desk, a closet and a small bed. It is a very simple living space. It was in this small room that the dying lifeline of the government of the Republic of Korea was rekindled.I can't help but be in awe, and I am very grateful to Chongqing Municipality for designating this place as the former site exhibition hall of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in 1992, and the relevant units are responsible for its operation and maintenance. Lianhuachi No. 38 is the only well-preserved site among the four offices of the Chongqing Provisional Government. However, in 1980, Chongqing Municipality's redevelopment policy made the site face a crisis of demolition.Ms. Li Suxin, the daughter of Martyr Li Da, who participated in the independence movement in the Chongqing Municipal Council at that time, appealed to the governments of China and South Korea to "please help us guard this site" and actively contributed to this matter.

Li Shanzi, the deputy curator of the Provisional Government Exhibition Hall who served as an explanation, said regretfully: "Although the Provisional Government Office Building is the only independence movement site that the governments of China and South Korea work together to protect, the number of tourists visiting each year has declined year by year, resulting in more and more business operations. It's getting harder." That night happened to be the Chongqing Municipal Party Secretary's reception dinner. I handed them the "Thanks Cards to Chongqing Citizens" prepared in South Korea. First, I thanked China for designating Preserving for cultural heritage, and second, entrusting you to preserve it well in the future. The secretary of the Chongqing Municipal Party Committee was surprised by the thank you card presented by the Korean visitor, and hurriedly accepted it and expressed his gratitude: "Although the temporary government office building is a Korean site, it is also a Chinese site. Chongqing can bring great benefits to the Korean independence movement." We are also very honored to help." And promised to preserve it well in the future. He put the thank you card in the most conspicuous place in the office building and hoped that the citizens of Chongqing could feel the friendship of the Korean people together.
