In the mid-1970s, the average water cut of the oil wells in the western central area test area rose to 54%, and the underground situation of the oilfield deteriorated seriously.In order to control the rise in water cut and maintain stable crude oil production, Wang Qimin led the test team to the 9-square-kilometer test area in the west of the Central District to conduct experiments on "separate mining, succession and stable production" for 10 years. In 1984, Wang Qimin was appointed to undertake the task of compiling the second 10-year plan for stable production of 50 million tons in Daqing Oilfield from 1986 to 1995.According to the forecast, by the end of the "Eighth Five-Year Plan" period, the comprehensive water content of Daqing Oilfield will exceed 85%, which will be an unacceptable reality for Daqing people.Wang Qimin set his sights on the off-surface reservoir, which is a kind of oil layer that has been sentenced to death in the development of oilfields at home and abroad. According to Wang Qimin's reasoning, they drilled three test wells.However, no trace of oil was seen in the perforation, only a little bit of crude oil was stained on the wall of the extracted tubing.Almost all the technicians shook their heads, but Wang Qimin seemed a little excited. The successful exploitation of off-surface reservoirs has broken the history that low-poor oil formations cannot be exploited.According to calculations, the geologic reserves of off-surface reservoirs in Daqing Oilfield can reach 740 million tons, which can increase the wealth of the country by more than 200 billion yuan based on 30% of the recoverable reserves.Wang Qimin and his comrades struggled for this for 7 years and created a miracle in the history of oil field development in the world. In 1996, 59-year-old Wang Qimin took up the important task of the director of the research institute.In view of the shortage of high-level talents in the research institute and the aging team of academic leaders, he looked to the future and advocated the implementation of the "1212" talent training target, that is, during the "Ninth Five-Year Plan" period, more than 100 postgraduates, 20 doctors, and more than 100 graduates will be trained. On January 1, 1997, China National Petroleum Corporation awarded Wang Qimin the first "Iron Man Science and Technology Achievement Award" gold medal.
