Memoirs of Peiqi Gerrard 葛佩琦 1059Words 2018-03-16
Because of the "March March 1st" coffin-carrying parade, although the Peking University Student Union was ordered by the school authorities to "stop all activities"; in fact, the original organization of the Student Union still exists and has not stopped activities for a day.In the minds of the students, the organization of the former student union is still the leading organization of Peking University to resist Japanese aggression and save the nation. In the summer of 1936, the situation in North China deteriorated sharply. On May 6, the "Hebei-Chahar Political Affairs Committee" secretly signed the "Anti-Communist Autonomy Agreement" with Japanese imperialism.During this period, Japan changed the "Tianjin Garrison Command" to "North China Garrison Command".This department is actually the headquarters for the Japanese army to control North China and attack the whole of China. In order to step up its invasion of China, Japan massively increased its troops to North China. From mid-May to the end of May 1936, more than 7,000 invading troops were transported from Japan to Tianjin.Equipped with cannons, tanks and other light and heavy weapons, they passed through the prosperous area of Tianjin and marched into the Japanese barracks.

The Japanese invading army secretly executed a large number of Chinese workers who were forced to expand their barracks and build military projects for them, and threw their bodies into the Haihe River in Tianjin.I saw with my own eyes many floating corpses on the Haihe River in Tianjin. This brutal action of Japan's invasion of China angered the patriotic students in Tianjin. On May 28, patriotic students in Tianjin held a massive demonstration against Japan's increase of troops in North China and the floating corpses in the Haihe River.Shouted: "Oppose Japan's increase of troops in North China!" "Thoroughly investigate the floating corpses in the Haihe River!"It expresses the determination of Chinese youth to resist Japan and save the nation.

In response to the patriotic actions of the students in Tianjin, the students of Peking University opposed the increase of Japanese troops in North China, and asked the executive committee of the former student union to express their views. The executive committee immediately held a meeting of all students on the morning of May 31 (Sunday) to discuss and decide: (1) Classes will be suspended for three days starting from June 1; (2) Issue a declaration to support the demonstration movement of Tianjin students; (3) Automatically reinstate the Student Union and file with the school authorities.

Because Peking University authorities refused to file.On the morning of June 1st, the former student union held another meeting of all students in the auditorium of the third hospital to discuss the issue of resuming the student union. Just after the meeting was announced, the Beiping City authorities suddenly sent many policemen and military police into the venue to stop the meeting. They said: The former student union has been ordered by the school authorities to "stop all activities" and has no right to hold a general assembly. The students were negotiating with the police and gendarmerie, and the dean and secretary general of Peking University rushed to the venue; they persuaded the students to stop the meeting. The students left the auditorium and retreated to the playground of the Third Hospital for a symposium.

Discussion decision: (1) Change the name of Peking University Student Union to "Peking University Student National Salvation Committee"; (2) The executive committee member of the former student union is responsible for printing ballots and distributing them to all the students to elect members of the National Salvation Committee, with a quota of 21 people; (3) Public voting is limited to 9 a.m. on June 2. The executive committee members of our former student union were responsible in groups and worked according to the resolutions of the general meeting. At 3 pm on June 2, 21 members of the National Salvation Committee were elected by public votes.I'm one of the elected committee members. The Executive Committee of the former Student Union handed over all the work and documents of the Student Union to the National Salvation Committee.Although this Peking University Student National Salvation Committee has never been approved by the Peking University authorities, with the strong support of the Pioneers and the support of most of the students, it still did a lot of anti-Japanese and national salvation work, and participated in the Peking City Student National Salvation Union. was elected as an executive member of the association.
