Ding Silin was born in Dingjiagang, Huang'an (now Hong'an) County, Hubei in April 1915.He joined the Workers' and Peasants' Red Army in May 1932, and joined the Communist Party of China the following year.In the Red Army, he served successively as a soldier, squad and platoon company commander, regiment chief of staff, and regiment commander.He was good at commanding night battles, won many battles, was wounded six times, and never got off the line of fire.
