Later, he served as the company commander of the Fifth Cavalry Brigade of the Northeast Army. Liu Guiwu was brave in battle, good at leading troops, and clearly rewarded and punished. He was supported by soldiers and appreciated by officials, and was soon promoted to head of the regiment.Later, his troops headed to Hebei and were reorganized into the Sixth Brigade of the Army's Riding Pong. Liu Guiwu was appointed as the head of the Eighteenth Regiment of the brigade.

In 1931, the Japanese imperialists launched the September 18th Incident. Liu Guiwu was filled with righteous indignation and asked to lead his troops to fight against Japanese imperialism, but his request was not approved.He also repeatedly asked to be disarmed and returned to the fields, hoping to organize the Anti-Japanese Volunteer Army to fight against Japan and return to his hometown.Soon, Liu Guiwu was promoted to Major General Commander of the Sixth Division of the Army Cavalry. From the beginning of December, more than 30,000 Japanese soldiers, under the cover of their air force and artillery firepower, aggressively invaded Suiyuan. General Liu Guiwu led a division of troops to resist the Japanese army tenaciously. They fought fiercely for nine days and nights. , Using infantry weapons to severely attack the invading Japanese army, the battle was unprecedentedly fierce, our position was lost and regained, and both sides suffered heavy losses.General Liu considered that our troops were weak and we had fought hard for many days. On December 12, after the Japanese army was hit, they concentrated 3,000 elite soldiers and attacked again, preparing to regain Dongsheng. General Liu Guiwu divided his troops into four groups and attacked the Japanese army in Heidonggou on the 18th. After half a day of fierce fighting, they wiped out 300 enemies and forced them to retreat in embarrassment. In February 1938, under the order of Commander Ma Zhanshan, General Liu Guiwu wiped out more than 200 enemy troops in Zhungeer Banner, and dealt a severe blow to the conspiracy of the Japanese invaders to get involved in the Iraqi League.
