Hu Qiaomu, who frequently wrote instruction letters to the "People's Daily", suddenly became a "blank period" between January 8, 1951 and March 4, 1951; Mao Zedong, who frequently wrote instructions to Hu Qiaomu, wrote the letter about publishing "On Practice" on December 28, 1950, and wrote to Hu Qiaomu about reprinting Xiao Qian on March 2, 1951. There was also a "blank period" in the instruction letter of the article "Learning in Land Reform". Where did Hu Qiaomu go during this "blank period" from mid-January to the end of February 1951?

His wife Gu Yu recalled it this way: On December 16, 1950, she gave birth to her third child and was in hospital. In this way, Hu Qiaomu had two sons and a daughter. He named his newborn son "Peace".Heping was born prematurely, only seven months old, and had to be kept in an oxygen box after birth. Gu Yu was busy taking care of his premature son. One day, news came that Hu Qiaomu fell ill and was sent to Beijing Hospital! Hu Qiaomu was exhausted.Working next to Mao Zedong was almost like a tight string every day. Moreover, Mao Zedong's life was turned upside down day and night. he.As time passed, he suffered from severe neurasthenia. The author once interviewed Luo Guanglu, Mao Zedong's confidential secretary, who also suffered from this disease.

Hu Qiaomu lived irregularly and suffered from stomach problems. That day, he suddenly had stomach bleeding, vomited a basin of blood, and was rushed to Beijing Hospital. Zhou Zezhao, the president of Beijing Hospital and a surgical expert, personally diagnosed and treated Hu Qiaomu.Vice Minister of Health Fu Liangan also rushed to Beijing Hospital to inquire about the matter. After examination, Hu Qiaomu suffered from gastric ulcer, which had been perforated, which caused massive bleeding. The doctor thought that an operation should be performed immediately to remove the ulcer, but he was very worried because Hu Qiaomu was weak and had already bled heavily, so he was afraid that he would not be able to withstand major surgery.

Upon hearing the news, Premier Zhou Enlai rushed to Beijing Hospital, convened a consultation with doctors, and listened to the opinions of all parties. Gu Yu's answer was very straightforward: "Surgery!" Knowing that Hu Qiaomu was going to have an operation, that morning, after a night of intense work, Mao Zedong was about to go to bed and asked the guard on duty to find his health doctor Wang Hebin. "Doctor Wang, you go to see Comrade Hu Qiaomu on my behalf. He is very ill and has been admitted to the Beijing Hospital." Mao Zedong said to Wang Hebin, "He is a very good man!"

Wang Hebin then rushed to Beijing Hospital, went up to the third floor of the main building of the ward, and met Fu Liangan and Hu Qiaomu.Wang Hebin recalled: Hu Qiaomu suffered from ulcer disease, bleeding profusely, pale and weak. The doctors and nurses are busy preparing him for the operation.I walked over to Comrade Hu Qiaomu who was lying on the transport bed. He was about to be sent to the operating room. "Chairman Mao is very concerned about your health and asked me to visit you on his behalf." I shook Hu Qiaomu's cold, bloodless hand and said. "Thank you Chairman Mao for your concern. Please tell the Chairman and ask him to rest assured that nothing will happen. I will be operated on." Comrade Hu Qiaomu said with a smile on his pale face, excited but with a little difficulty.

"Chairman, don't worry!" Hu Qiaomu told me again with a smile when pushing him to the operating room. Hu Qiaomu was pushed into the operating room, and Zhou Zezhao, the director of Beijing Hospital, performed the surgery himself.Hu Qiaomu's gastric ulcer was quite severe, and three-quarters of his stomach was removed! Mao Zedong paid close attention to Hu Qiaomu's condition. In addition to listening to Wang Hebin's report, Mao Zedong also asked Beijing Hospital to report Hu Qiaomu's condition every day. After the operation, another unexpected situation occurred: the stomach and intestines were adhered, and another operation may be needed!

Can Hu Qiaomu, who is already very weak, survive the second operation? Zhou Enlai heard the words and came to Beijing Hospital again to listen to the opinions of the doctors.Zhou Enlai asked the doctors, is there any other way besides another operation? The doctors finally decided to use other methods to treat Hu Qiaomu's gastrointestinal adhesions without surgery. Hu Qiaomu was already thin. After most of the gastrectomy, it affects digestion even more.Gu Yu said: "He has never been fat in his life!" I lived in the Beijing hospital for two months, which became that period of "blank period".

As soon as Hu Qiaomu was discharged from the hospital, he started working.Mao Zedong wrote him a letter on March 2, 1951: Xiao Qian, a writer, was the deputy editor-in-chief of "People's China" (English version) at that time.Li Junlong was a counselor of the Government Affairs Council and wrote "Hunan Peasants in Battle", which was published in "People's Daily" on February 10, 1951. This letter shows that Hu Qiaomu is busy again. However, he is still recuperating. He and Gu Yu lived in the Harmony Garden of the Summer Palace in Beijing to recuperate. The Garden of Harmonious Interests is the "garden within a garden" of the Summer Palace, with elegant scenery. This garden was originally called "Huishan Garden". Emperor Qianlong of the Qing Dynasty took a fancy to Huishan Garden in Wuxi when he visited the south of the Yangtze River, and ordered it to be imitated in Beijing.Later, it was rebuilt in the 19th year of Guangxu and renamed "Harmony Garden".There are thirteen pavilions and pavilions in the garden, including Hanyuan Hall, Zhanqingxuan Hall, Zhuxin Tower, and Zhichun Hall. There is a clear water, winding corridors, quiet and simple, and a paradise.Hu Qiaomu lived here for several months, feeling refreshed.

At this time, his residence in Zhongnanhai had been moved from Jinggu to Laifutang in the north and west of Chunouzhai, next to Kaifeng, the deputy director of the Propaganda Department of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China.Later, he moved to Zhongnanhai Xifutang to live.
