源氏想起了三公主，觉得其人实甚可爱，其怀孕之苦毕竟甚为可怜。虽然想对她断念，无奈恨敌不过爱，忧伤之余，终于到六条院来探望她。只是见面之后，心中越发难过了，便替她举办种种法事，以祈安产。他对三公主的待遇，大体上同从前一样，有许多地方反比从前亲切而又优厚了。只是心中已经有了隔阂，总不能开怀畅叙。仅仅表面做得好看，借以掩人耳目，实则心中常怀不快之感。因此三公主更加觉得痛苦。源氏并不向她明言看信之事，三公主独自心中纳闷，正象一个无知的孩子。源氏想道： “正因为如此天真，所以做出那种事情来。落落大方原是好的，然而太过分，就靠不住。”便推想世间男女之事，觉得都很可虑。 “例如明石女御，过于温柔可亲，天真烂漫，深恐将使柏木之类的色情儿更加动心。大概为女子者，如果胸中没有主意而态度一味驯顺，便容易受男子轻侮。一个男子看中一个不应该看中的女子，而这女子并不坚拒，那就会犯过失了。”他又回想：“髭黑右大臣的夫人玉鬘，并无特别有力的保护人，从小流落在乡间长大起来，然而主意坚定，行为周谨。我对于她，大体上以父亲自居，但心中不无爱欲。她却拿定主意，绝不动心，终于平安无事。髭黑串通了无知的侍女而闯入其室，她也断然表示拒绝，确是世人所周知的。直到我正式许可，她才肯嫁给他，这就不受私定终身的讥评了。现在想来，此人何等坚贞可佩！她和髭黑二人，宿缘一定甚深，所以能够长久共处，无论如何，永不变更。如果她当时被世人看作本人自择夫婿，世人对她多少必有轻蔑之感。此人实在非常聪明啊！”
且说源氏对于二条院的尚侍胧月夜，至今还是不能忘情。三公主出了那件可悲之事，他深感痛心，于是对于这个意志薄弱的胧月夜也就略怀轻蔑之感了。后来闻知胧月夜已经成遂了出家的本愿，便又深感可怜，痛自后悔，立刻写信去慰问。信中严厉地责备她的无情：连最近出家也不通知他一声。内有诗云：
“为君远戍须磨浦，
君入空门我不闻。
我已饱尝人世无常之苦，却至今未能出家，终于落在你后，实甚遗憾！你虽已舍弃世事，但你总得在佛前回向，务请首先提我姓名，感激不尽。”此外语言甚多。胧月夜早已发心出家，只因有源氏牵累，故迁延至今方始实行。此情她对外人未便明言，但心中不胜感慨。左思右想，觉得自己与源氏虽然自昔结下痛苦因缘，但恩情毕竟不浅。自今以后，不能再通音信，此次作复，已是最后一次。想到这里，不胜感伤，便用心作复，笔墨非常讲究。信中言道：“人世无常之苦，只有我一人知道。来信说你落在我后，诚然诚然：
明石浦头遭苦难，
缘何后我入空门？
回向乃对一切众生，岂不有你在内？”这信用深宝蓝色纸，系在一枝莽草上。此虽普通形式，然而笔致风流潇洒，优雅之趣无异昔时。信送到时，源氏正住在二条院、今后对此人情缘已断，便不妨将信给紫夫人看。对她说道：“她驳得我好残酷啊！我冷眼旁观，阅尽世间种种凄凉之相，实在太无聊了！可与纵谈寻常世事。省识四时情趣、不乏风流逸致、而能作友谊的交际之人，现世只剩有槿斋院与胧月夜二人，然而皆已出家为尼了。槿斋院修持尤勤，屏绝一切世事，专心诵经礼佛。我阅人多矣，其中只有这槿斋院，一方面思虑周谨，一方面温柔可亲，欲求与她相似之人，亦不可得。教养女子，真是一件非常困难之事。女子生来具有之宿命，是穷是达，目不可得而见。因此父母予以教养，往往不能如意称心。而从小教养以至成人，实在非常吃力。我命中注定只有一个女儿，不须多费苦心，倒是好的。年轻的时候，不堪寂寞，盼望子女众多，还常常悲叹呢。请你用心抚育幼小的公主。
明石女御所生公主，由紫夫人抚育。
女御年纪还轻，尚未深解世事，加之身在宫中，职务多忙，凡事不能顾虑周至也。大凡公主，务须教养得十全十美，使人无可指摘。心意坚定，能够泰然度送岁月，教人不须顾虑。公主不比臣下：寻常百姓家的女儿，嫁个门当户对的丈夫，教养不足自有丈夫补助也。”紫夫人答道：“我虽不会好好地教育，只要一息尚存，无不尽忠竭力。但不知天命如何耳。”她久病新愈，难免有怯弱的感觉，听见槿斋院与胧月夜尚侍如意称心、毫无阻碍地入了佛门，不胜羡慕之情。源氏说：“尚侍所用尼僧装束，她那边的人目下尚未做惯，应由这里送去。袈裟是怎样缝制的？请你吩咐人做吧。我想请东北院里的花散里夫人也做一套。过分严肃的法服，阴气沉沉，教人看了讨厌。总须带点优雅之趣才好。”紫夫人命人缝了一套深宝蓝色的尼装。源氏召唤作物所的人来前，私下吩咐他动工制造尼僧应用各种器物。茵褥、锦席、屏风、帷屏等，都十分秘密，特别加工制造。
作物所是中古禁中制造器具、雕刻品、锻冶品之所。
为了上述种种事情，入山修行的朱雀院的五十庆寿，延期到秋天举行。但八月是夕雾大将的生母葵夫人的忌月，夕雾未便出席指挥乐队；九月又是朱雀院的母亲弘徽殿太后的忌月，庆寿只得定在十月。但到了十月，三公主病重起来，又延迟了几天。柏木卫门督的夫人落叶公主，于十月来到朱雀院邸宅贺寿。她的公爹前太政大臣亲自备办贺礼，隆重而又周到，其仪式尽善尽美。柏木乘此机会告个奋勇，也来贺寿。然而身心还未复健，一直萎靡不振，象个病人。三公主也局促不安，负疚在心，日夜悲叹。怀胎月分多了，身体不胜痛苦。源氏虽然怀着不快之感，但看到这个娇小玲珑而弱不禁风的人身患病苦，亦觉十分可怜，不知将有什么变化，左思右想，十分忧闷。这一年做了种种法事，忙忙碌碌地过去了。朱雀院闻知三公主怀孕，不胜挂念。曾有人奏闻： “源氏大人近几月来常常住在外面，几乎绝不回家宿夜。”因此他很怀疑：公主怎么会有喜呢？心中纳闷，便觉世间男女问题实甚可恨。他听说紫夫人患病期间源氏为了照料病人，久不来三公主处，心中已经感觉不快。后来又闻紫夫人病愈之后，源氏还是疏远三公主，他便疑心：“难道源氏外宿期间，三公主犯了过失？她自己不懂得这些事，只怕有些品性不良的侍女为非作歹，出了什么事情。在宫廷中，男女互相通信，本是风雅之事，但有时也会发生荒唐的事故，其例时有所闻。”他竟如此猜想。世俗琐事，朱雀院均已抛舍，惟父女之爱，犹自未能忘怀，于是写了一封详细的信给三公主。信送到时，正好源氏在六条院，便阅读了。但见其中有云：“只因无甚要事，所以久不通问。音信暌隔，日月推迁，使我不胜悬念。汝近身患疾苦，我闻知详情以后，诵经念佛之余，时深挂念，不知近日如何。人生于世，即使寂寞寡欢，或遭意外之变，亦应耐心忍受。轻信人言，自以为是，而怀恨于人，实乃下品行为。”诸如此类，都是教训之言。源氏看了，深为同情。独自寻思：“上皇当然不曾知道那件秘密的祸事，因此认为罪在于我，一味怨我无情。”对三公主说：“你写回信时将如何说法呢？如此伤心的信，我看了也很痛苦！我虽知道你有意想不到之事，但并没有使外人觉察到我对你有所怠慢啊。不知是谁告诉你父亲的。”三公主羞耻不堪，背转身去，神情非常可怜。她面庞清瘦，神思恍惚，姿态反而更加优雅妩媚了。
源氏又对她说：“上皇早就看出你太孩子气，非常担心，看了这封信便可知道。自今以后，你万事必须小心谨慎。我本来不想对你如此直说，但教上皇知道我辜负了他的嘱托，我很不安心，又甚抱歉，所以不得不向你说明。你不仔细考虑，一味轻信人言，心中只管恨我疏慢冷淡，又见我年纪老大，姿态丑陋可厌，一使我觉得遗憾而又伤心！但愿你在上皇住世期间，顾念他向我嘱托的一片苦心，暂时忍耐，把我和年轻人同等看待，不可过分轻视。我从小就怀抱出家学道之大愿，不料几个愿力不宏的女人，反而比我先入佛门，真教我惭愧无地！倘能由我自己作主，我对尘世决不会迷恋不舍。只因你父亲出家之时，将你托付与我，叫我代他保护。我体谅他的苦心，且喜得他信任，便遵命接受嘱托。我若追随了他，争先出家，也将你抛弃不管，你父亲将谓我失信背约，因此未能如愿以偿耳。我所关怀的子女，现在都已成长，不复是我出家的羁绊了。明石女御将来如何虽不可知，但子女日渐众多，只要我在世时平安无事，以后不须担心了。此外诸夫人，都顺从我，都已到了不惜与我一同出家的年龄。我的顾虑便越来越减轻。你父亲世寿所余无多，而且病势日见沉重，心情常是郁结。今后你切不可再度流传意外的恶名，使他听了伤心！他在现世已很安稳，不会有什么问题了。只是妨碍他往生极乐，其罪实甚可怕！”话中虽然不曾明言柏木之事，然而针针见血，使得三公主眼泪淌个不住，伤心之极，竟至昏迷不省。源氏也哭起来，说道：“从前我听老人教训，觉得很不耐烦，想不到现在自己也变了老人。你听了我这番话，大概也觉得这个讨厌的老翁絮聒不休，很不耐烦吧？”他自己也觉得可耻。便把砚台取过来，亲自磨墨，又取出信笺，教三公主写回信。但三公主两手发抖，一时写不出来。源氏推想：她对柏木那封详细的情书写回信时，恐怕是洋洋洒洒，畅所欲言的吧。便觉此人十分可恶，对她的怜爱之心全都消失了。然而还是教她如何措词。后来又对她说：“你要上朱雀院贺寿，本月已经来不及了。况且你姐姐二公主的贺仪非常体面，你这怀孕之身，和她并肩拜寿，恐怕相形见绌吧。十一月是父皇桐壶帝的忌月。年底事情又很烦忙，况且那时你的身子更加难看，叫汝父看了不快。然而总不能一直延搁下去。你不可只管忧愁苦闷，快把精神振作起来。形容如此消瘦，应该好好调养。”可知他毕竟是怜爱她的。
在从前，无论何事，凡是有关娱乐的，源氏必然特地召唤柏木卫门督前来，和他商量办法。但是近来绝不通问了。他也曾顾虑到别人疑心。然而又想；“如果和他见面，他把我看作毫不知情的糊涂汉，我很可耻；我看到他，也不能平心静气。”因此柏木好几个月不来参谒，他也并不怪他。一般人总以为柏木还在生病，而六条院今年也不办游宴之会。只有夕雾大将猜到几分，他想：“其中定有缘故。柏木是个好色之徒，我早就看出他的心事，大约不堪相思之苦了。”但他不曾想到已经成了铁定无疑的事实。
匆匆到了十二月。三公主定于初十之后赴朱雀院贺寿。六条院殿内练习舞乐，热闹得很。在二条院养病的紫夫人还未归来，听说六条院试演舞乐，心思静不下来，也就迁回来了。明石女御也来归宁。她此次所生的又是一个皇子。她的子女成群，个个都长得非常可爱，源氏朝夕含饴弄孙，自喜老年多福。试演舞乐之时，髭黑右大臣的夫人玉鬘也来观赏。夕雾在试演之前，先在东北院练习音乐，每日朝夕演奏，花散里听得多了，所以试演之日不来观赏。柏木卫门督不参加这个盛会，未免美中不足，使人觉得扫兴。而且外人也要奇怪，疑心有何原因。因此源氏只得派人前去邀他。柏木以病重为由，婉言辞谢。源氏想道：“他虽然如此说，其实并无重病，定是心中有所顾虑。”他觉得可怜，便特地写一封信去邀请。柏木的父亲前太政大臣也劝柏木：“你为什么辞谢？六条院大人将误解你有何用意呢！你又没有大病，耐着性子去吧。”柏木蒙源氏再度相邀，觉得情面难却，便到六条院来了。

柏木到时，王侯公卿们尚未到齐。源氏照例叫他走进近旁的帘内来，把正屋的帘子放下，和他会面。但见柏木非常消瘦，脸色发青。他本来不及诸弟那么愉快活泼，而温厚周谨，则胜于常人。但今日态度特别斯文一脉。源氏觉得此人作为公主之婿，实无瑕疵可指。只是此次之事，男女两方都太糊涂，其罪不可原宥。他向柏木注视，心中觉得可恶，但脸上绝不表示，还是亲切地对他说道：“只因无甚要事，所以久不见面了。近几月来，我为了照顾两处病人，心烦意乱，片刻不暇。在这期间，这里的三公主欲举办法事，为朱雀院祝寿，但亦未能顺利进行。现在年关已经迫近，诸事都不能办得如意称心，只得奉献一些素菜，聊以应名而已。称为祝寿，似乎排场十分盛大，其实不过是教上皇看看我家所生许多子孙而已。因此我就发心叫他们学习舞蹈。寿宴上舞乐总是少不得的。惟指导拍子的人，想来想去，除了你之外没有别人可请。所以我不怪你长久不来，定要邀你到场。”他说时和颜悦色，毫无别意。柏木反而难为情起来，面孔都变色了，一时说不出答语，好容易开口道；“我也闻知大人为各处病人之事烦忙。我自今春以来，患了讨厌的脚气病，最近发作得很厉害，踏也踏不下去。日子久了，身体愈见衰弱。因此连宫中也没有去，一直笼闭在家中，仿佛与世隔绝了。家父对我说：'今年朱雀院龄满五十，我家应该特别隆重地为他祝寿。'但他又说：'我已不惜挂冠悬车，身无官职，参与贺寿礼式，无有适当座位。你官位虽然还低，但与父亲同样怀抱大志。让上皇看看你的抱负吧。' 家父如此催促，我只得熬着重病，前往拜寿。家父知道：朱雀院专精佛道，近来生活益见清静，料想他不喜欢领受过于隆重的贺仪，所以万事崇尚简略。朱雀院所深愿的，是大家静静地谈谈，我们应该顺从他的愿望。”源氏早就听说落叶公主为父皇举办盛大寿宴，现在听见柏木说成父亲主办，觉得他用心很周到。便答道：“一点也不错！世人都以为简略就是疏慢，只有你知情达理，所以能说这话。如此说来，我的见解很对，以后我更放心了。我家夕雾在朝廷，也逐渐象大人模样，但对此种情趣，向来不感兴味。关于上皇，无论何事，你总没有不详悉的吧。就中对于音乐，我知道他特别爱好，而且非常精通。出家为僧、舍弃世事之后，可以静心听赏，现在一定更加爱好音乐了。我想请你和夕雾共同努力，好好地教养那班学舞的童子。那些专门技师，只是精通自己的业务，却不懂得教养，不足道也。”说时态度非常亲切。柏木一则以喜，一则以惧，心中惶惑不安，很少说话。他只巴望早点儿离去，因此并不详细回答。后来好容易脱身而出。夕雾在东院花散里夫人那边训练乐人和舞人，得了柏木的帮助，装束等又添了些新花样。夕雾已经尽心竭力，而柏木用意更加周详。可见此人对于此道修养甚深。
朱雀院是出家人，故祝寿时举办法事。
《后汉书·逢萌传》：“王莽杀其子宇。萌谓友人日；'三纲绝矣，不去祸将及人。'即解冠挂东都城门，归将家族浮海，客于辽东。”古文孝经：“七十老致仕，悬其所仕之车置诸庙。”辞官曰“挂冠”，曰“悬车”，本此。
今日是试演之日。但因诸位夫人都来观赏，故表演者也要打扮得好看些。贺寿当日，舞童应穿灰褐色礼服和淡紫色衬袍。今日则穿青色礼服和暗红色衬袍。三十个乐人，今日都穿白衣服。乐队设在与东南院的钓殿连接的廊房中。从假山南端出发，走向源氏面前，一路上演奏《仙游霞》之曲。其时空中疏疏地飘下几点瑞雪，令人想见不久即将腊尽春回。梅花也已含苞欲放了。源氏坐在厢房帘内，只有紫夫人的父亲式部卿亲王和髭黑右大臣二人奉陪，其余王侯公卿都坐在廊下。今日不是正式贺寿，故并不安排盛筵，只是寻常招待。髭黑右大臣家玉鬘夫人所生四公子、夕雾大将家云居雁夫人所生三公子，以及萤兵部卿亲王家的两位王孙儿子，共舞《万岁乐》。大家年纪都还很小，姿态非常可爱。此四人都是富贵之家的子弟，都长得眉清目秀，打扮得衣冠楚楚，想是观者胸有成见之故，都觉得异常高贵。还有，夕雾大将家惟光的女儿典侍所生二公子和式部卿亲王家的公子--前任兵卫督、现称为源中纳言的--二人共舞《皇麞》。髭黑右大将家玉鬘夫人所生三公子舞《陵王》，夕雾右大臣家云居雁夫人所生大公子舞《落蹲》。此外又有《太平乐》、《喜春乐》等，都由源氏一族中的公子及大人表演。天色渐暮，源氏命人把帘子卷起，便觉另有一般美景，诸孙儿的容貌实在艳丽，舞姿新奇可贵。这是因为舞师、乐师悉心教练，各尽所能；又加了夕雾与柏木的精深博雅的指导，所以舞姿特别美妙。源氏觉得处处都很可爱。王侯公卿中年纪较大的人，都感
