源氏大将心甚恋慕藤壶皇后。此时为欲惩诫她的冷酷，故意不理睬她，闭门隐忍度日。然而深恐外人看了不成样子，自己也寂寞无聊，因此发心赴云林院佛寺游览，乘便观赏秋野的景色。亡母桐壶更衣的哥哥是个律师，就在这寺里修行。大将在这里诵经礼佛，滞留两三天，倒也很有趣味。木叶渐次变红，秋野景色清丽，令人看了浑忘家乡。源氏大将召集一切有学问的法师，请他们说教，向他们问道。由于地点所使然，令人彻夜痛感人生之无常，直到天明。然而正如古歌所云：“破晓望残月，恋慕负心人。”不免使他想起那意中人来。将近天明，法师等在月光之下插花供水，发出杯盘叮当之声。菊花和浓淡不同的各种红叶，散置各处，这景象也颇有趣致。源氏大将念念不忘地想：“如此修行，可使现世不致寂寞，又可使后世获得善报，这虚幻无常的一身还有什么烦恼呢？”律师以尊严之声朗诵“念佛众生摄取不舍”。源氏公子听了觉得深可羡慕，想道：“我自己何不决心出家呢？”此念一动，便首先挂念紫姬，真是道心不坚！他觉得从来不曾如此长久离开紫姬，便频频写信去慰问她。有一封信中说：“我想尝试一下：脱离尘世是否可能？然而无以慰我寂寥，反而更觉乏味。但目下尚有听讲之事未了，一时不能返家。你处近况如何？念念。”随意不拘地写在一张陆奥纸上，非常美观。又附诗道：
“君居尘世如朝露，
听到山岚悬念深。 "
信中详叙种种细情，紫姬读了掩面泣下，便在一张白纸上写一首诗答复他：
“我似蜘丝荣露草，
风吹丝断任飘零！ "
源氏大将看了，自言自语他说：“她的字越写越好了。”微笑地欣赏着。他们常有书信往还，所以她的笔迹很象源氏大将，近来越发秀丽，笔锋更添了妩媚。源氏大将觉得这个人长育得一点缺陷也没有，心中非常快慰。

云林院离贺茂神社甚近，源氏大将便寄信与当斋院的谨姬。信是向槿姬的侍女中将君诉恨的：“我今旅居萧寺，怅望长空，渴慕故人，不知能蒙斋院俯察下情否？”另有诗赠与斋院：
“含情窃慕当年乐，
恐渎禅心不敢言。
古歌云：'安得年光如轮转，夙昔之日今再来。'明知言之无益，但渴望其能再来。”言词亲切，仿佛两人已有深交。诗用一张浅绿色的中国纸写，挂在白布上，白布系在杨桐枝上，表示是供奉神明的。中将便写回信：“离群索居，寂寞无聊；沉思往事，颇多遐想。然亦无可奈何。”写得比往日更加用心。斋院则在白布上题一首诗：
“当年未有萦心事，
何用含情慕往时？
今世无缘了。”如此而已。源氏大将看了，想道：“她的手笔并不纤丽，然而功夫很深，草书尤其漂亮。料想她年华渐长，容颜定然更增艳丽吧。”此心一动，自知亵渎神明，不免有些惶恐。他回想在野宫访晤六条妃子那个感伤的秋夜，正是去年今日，不料今秋又有类似之事，却也奇妙。他怨恨神明妨碍他的恋爱，此种习癖实甚恶劣。他又回想：当年如果执意追求，未始不能到手；那时等闲放过，今日甚是后悔。此种想法，也实甚怪诞。斋院也知道源氏有此种怪癖，所以偶尔给他回信时，并不严词拒绝。这也有些不可思议。

源氏大将诵读《天台六十卷》，每有不懂之处，即请法师讲解。法师说：“这山寺平素积有修行功德，所以此次有此盛会，佛面上也是光彩的。”连下级的法师也都欢喜。源氏大将在山寺中悠闲度日，想起了俗世种种纠纷扰攘，竟懒得回家了。然而一想到紫姬，总觉得是一个羁绊，便不想久居山寺。临别之时，酬劳诵经费甚为丰盛。所有上下僧众，均得赏赐，连附近一切平民也都获得布施。大大地做了一番功德，然后离去。临去之时，山农野老聚集在各处路旁，都来送行。众人仰望车驾，无不感激涕零。源氏大将身穿黑色丧服，乘坐黑色牛车，全无华丽之色。但众人隔帘隐约窥见尊容，都叹为盖世无双。
《天台六十卷》是佛经名，内含玄义、文句、止观、尺签、疏记、弘决各十卷。
多日不见紫姬，她长得容貌更加美丽，举止更加端详了。她担心自己今后命运，忧形于色，源氏大将看了觉得深可怜爱。他近来常常为了不应有之事而沉思梦想，紫姬定然分明看出，因此她近来作诗，常用“变色”等语。源氏大将觉得对她不起，今日归家，对她比往日更加亲爱。他看看从山寺带回来的红叶，觉得比庭中的红叶颜色更浓。想起了与藤壶皇后久不通问，毕竟不好意思，便无端地把山寺带来的红叶送给她，并附一信与王命妇，信中说：“闻娘娘入宫探望太子，至深欣慰。我久疏问候，但两宫之事，时在念中，只因山寺礼佛诵经，原有规定日数，若中途退出，人将谓我不诚，因此延至今日方始返邸。红叶一枝，色泽甚美，我一人独赏，'好似美锦在暗中'，甚是可惜，故特送上，倘有机会，望呈请娘娘御览。”
古歌：“深山红叶无人见，好似美锦在暗中。”见《古今和歌集》。
这枝红叶的确甚美，藤壶皇后看了也很注目，但见枝上缚着一封小小的打成结的信，一如往日作风。藤壶皇后深恐被侍女们看见，脸色骤变。想道：“他此心终是不死，实在教人烦恼。所可惜者，此人虽思虑周至，却有时做出大胆妄为的事来，外人见了得不怀疑？”便把这枝红叶插在花瓶里，供在檐下柱旁了。
藤壶皇后写给源氏大将的信，所谈的只是一般的事情，以及关于皇太子有所请托之事，是严正的答谢信。源氏大将看了，想道：“她如此小心，多么顽强！”不免心中怨恨，然而回想自己过去对皇太子照顾无微不至，如今倘使忽然疏远，深恐外人怀疑，怪他变心。便在藤壶皇后出宫之日进宫去探望皇太子。
源氏大将进宫，先去参见皇上，朱雀帝此时正空闲无事，便和他共话今昔沧桑。朱雀帝的相貌非常肖似桐壶院，而比他稍稍艳丽，神情优雅而温和。两人相对，共诉丧父之恸。源氏大将与尚侍胧月夜的关系尚未断绝的消息，朱雀帝也曾闻知，并且有时从胧月夜举止之间也看得出来。但他想道：“此事有何不可！倘是尚侍入宫后开始的，确是不成体统。但他们是早有关系的，那么互相心交，并无不称之处。”因此并不责备源氏大将。俩人谈论种种事情，朱雀帝将学问上的疑义请源氏大将讲解，又谈论恋爱的诗歌，顺便说到六条妃子的女儿斋宫赴伊势那天的事，赞叹斋宫容貌之美丽。源氏大将也毫无顾忌，叙述那天在野宫访晤六条妃子时黎明的情景。
二十日的月亮迟迟地升起，夜色清幽可爱。朱雀帝说：“此刻正是饮酒作乐之时！”但源氏大将起身告辞，奏道：“藤壶母后今晚出宫，臣拟前往东宫探望太子。父皇遗命，嘱臣看顾太子，太子又别无保护人，臣理应尽力照拂。由于太子情分，对母后亦当体恤。”朱雀帝答道：“父皇遗嘱，命朕视太子如己子，故朕亦甚为关心。惟特地张扬其事，亦有所不便，故常保留在心中。太子年龄虽幼，而笔迹异常优秀。朕躬万事愚庸，有此聪颖之太子，顿觉面目增光也。”源氏大将又奏：“大体而言，太子确甚聪颖，竟有成人模样。然而年仅六龄，终未成器。”便将太子日常情况详细奏闻，然后退朝。
弘徽殿太后的哥哥藤大纳言的儿子头弁，自从祖父右大臣专权以来，变成了一个青年红人，目空一切。此时这头弁正前往探望其妹丽景殿女御，恰巧源氏大将的前驱人低声喝着，从后面赶上来。头弁的车子暂时停住，头弁在车中从容不迫地朗诵道： “白虹贯日，太子畏之！”意思是讥讽源氏将不利于朱雀帝，源氏大将听了实在难堪，然而不便和他计较。因为弘徽殿太后痛恨源氏大将，对他态度十分冷酷，太后的亲信便常常嘲弄源氏大将。源氏大将不胜其烦，但也只得装作不听见，默默地走过了。
此丽景殿女御是朱雀帝的妃子，在亲戚关系上是帝的表妹。
战国时，燕太子丹使荆轲刺秦皇，看见白虹贯日，知道是失败之兆，心中恐惧。
他来到东宫时，藤壶皇后尚未退出。他就托侍女转达：“刻因参见陛下，故至此夜深时方来请安。”此时月色甚美。藤壶皇后听见源氏大将来了，便想起桐壶院在世时情状：当时每逢如此良宵，必有丝竹管弦之兴，何等繁荣热闹！如今宫殿依然不改，而人事变态实多，可胜叹哉！便即景吟诗，命王命妇传告源氏大将：
“重重夜雾遮明月，
遥慕清辉饮恨多。 "
源氏大将隔帘隐约听到藤壶皇后的动静，觉得异常可亲，立刻忘记了对皇后的怨恨，流下泪来。便答道：
“清辉不改前秋色，
夜雾迷离惹恨多。 "
昔人不是也痛恨'霞亦似人心，故意与人妒'么？ "
重重夜雾比喻右大臣派的人，明月比喻朱雀帝。
古歌：“欲往看山樱，朝霞迷山路。霞亦似人心，故意与人妒。”见《后拾遗集》。
藤壶皇后即将离去，舍不得与太子分别，对他说了千言万语。然而太子毕竟年事尚幼，未能深切理会，母后心中不免怅惘。太子本来睡得很早，今天为了母后即将离去，至此时尚未就睡。母后出宫之时，他虽然伤心饮泣，但并未牵衣顿足。母后觉得十分可怜。
此后，源氏大将想起了头弁所诵的文句，痛感过去种种非礼之事深可警戒，便觉世路险阻，对尚侍胧月夜也很久不敢通信。有一天，秋雨初降，气象萧索。不知胧月夜有何感想，忽然寄了一首诗来：
“秋风已厉音书绝，
寂寞无聊岁月经。 "
这正是催人哀思的时节，这位尚侍想必是情不自禁，故尔不顾一切，偷偷地写这首诗派人送来，此心深可怜爱。源氏大将便教这送信使者稍稍等待，命侍女打开安放中国纸的橱来，选取一张特等贡纸，又仔细挑选精致的笔墨，郑重其事地写回信，神情甚是艳雅。左右侍女见此模样，互相牵衣使眼，悄悄地问：“到底是写给哪一位的？”源氏大将写道：“即使叠上芜函，终是无补于事。为此深自惩戒，已觉心灰意懒。正拟独任共愁，岂意忽接来书。
莫将惜别伤离泪，
看作寻常秋雨霖！
但得两心相通，即使凝望长空，亦可忘忧遣怀。”信中详诉衷情，不可尽记。
诸如此例，来信诉怨的女子，不计其数。源氏大将只报以缠绵悱恻的复音，并不十分动心。
且说藤壶皇后发心在桐壶院周年忌辰之后举办一次法会，请高僧讲演《法华经》八卷，目下正操心作种种准备。国忌是十一月初一，是日天上降下一片大雪。源氏大将赋诗寄藤壶皇后：
“诀别于今周岁月，
何时再见眼中人？ "
今日是万民举哀之日，藤壶皇后立刻答他一首诗：
“苟延残命多愁苦，
今日痴心慕往年。 "
写得并不特别用心，但源氏大将看了觉得异常高雅优美，想是心理作用之故。她的书体并不特异，也不时髦，然而自有与众不同的优点。源氏大将今天屏除了一切恋情，只是跟着融雪的水滴一同流泪，专心诵经礼佛。
十一月十日过后，藤壶皇后的《法华经》八卷开讲。这法会异常庄严。分四日讲演，每日所用经卷，装潢精美无比：玉轴、绫裱都很讲究，连包经卷的竹席上的装饰，其精致也世无其类。原来这藤壶皇后即使对日常细小物事，亦必装饰得异常精美。像今天的大事，当然更加郑重其事了。佛像上的装饰以及香花桌上的桌布等，令人误认为西方极乐世界。第一天是追荐先帝，第二天是为母后祈冥福，第三天是追荐桐壶院。这一天所讲的是《法华经》第五卷，最为重要。公卿大夫等顾不得右大臣嫌忌，大家一齐参与听讲。这一天的讲师，也选请道行特别卓越的高僧。开讲之初，诵唱“采薪及果蔬，汲水供佛勤。我因此功德，知解《法华经》。”虽然同是这几句，今天却诵得特别庄严。诸亲王等奉献各种供养物。其中源氏大将的供养物用意特别精深，迥非别人可比。作者屡次用同类的赞词来褒美源氏大将，实因每次拜见此人，总觉比前次越发优越，故不得不如此耳。
最后一天，是藤壶皇后自己发愿。她在佛前发誓，决心出家为尼。四座闻言，无不震惊。其兄兵部卿亲王及源氏大将亦皆动心，认为事出意外。兵部卿亲王半途起身进入帘内、苦劝收回成命。皇后向他声明决心之坚强，终于无法挽回。发愿既毕，宣召比壑山住持为誓愿人授戒，皇后的伯父横川僧都走来，为皇后落发。此时满殿人心激动，一齐放声大哭。
此先帝是藤壶之父，是桐壶院前一代天皇。
此古歌乃大僧正行基所作，见《拾遗集》。 横川是比壑山三塔之一。
即使是毫不足道的衰老之人，面临削发出家之际，也不免方寸动乱，悲从中来。何况藤壶皇后青春鼎盛，预先并无一言，突然遁世，兵部卿亲王安得不放声大哭！其他参与法会的人，看见周围气象悲切而庄严，也无不泪满襟袖而归去。桐壶院的许多皇子，回想藤壶皇后昔日荣华，大家感慨悲叹，都来慰问。只有源氏大将，散会后依旧枯坐席上，一言不发，心中茫然若失。但深恐旁人怪他为何如此悲伤，便于兵部卿亲王退出后前来慰问。此时众人渐次散去，四周寂静。众侍女拭着眼泪，群集在各处。月明如昼，雪光映目，庭前景色凄清。源氏大将对此夜色，沉思往事，不堪悲恸。强自镇静，命侍女传言问道：“何故如此突然下了决心？”皇后照例遣王命妇答道：“我早有此志，并非今日始下决心。所以不早说者，深恐人言骚扰，使我心乱耳。”此时帘内侍女云集，行动起居、衣衫窸窣之声，历历可闻。惊恐悲叹之声，亦时时泄露帘外。源氏大将想道：不可早说，确是有理。便觉无限悲伤。
门外北风甚烈，雪花乱飞，帘内兰麝氤氲，佛前名香缭绕，加之源氏大将身上衣香扑鼻，此夜景有如极乐净土。皇太子的使者也来到了。藤壶皇后回想前日临别时太子之言及其依依不舍之状，虽决心坚强，亦悲伤难堪，一时不能作答。源氏大将代为补充言词，答谢来使。此时殿内不论何人，尽皆垂头丧气。因此源氏大将不能畅所欲言，但吟诗道：
“清光似月君堪羡，
世累羁身我独悲。
我作此想，实属懦怯堪怜，对君之毅然决然，惭愧之至，羡慕之极！”此时众侍女围集藤壶皇后身旁，源氏大将心中千言万语，不能发泄，但觉异常烦闷，藤壶皇后答道。
“一例红尘都看破，
何时全断世间缘。
尚留一点浊念，奈何！”这答词的一部分，想是侍女擅改的吧。源氏大将胸中无限悲伤，痛心之余，匆匆退出。
“世累羁身”，暗指有皇太子之牵累，不能随君一同出家。后面藤壶答诗“何时全断世间缘”，亦暗示一切都已看破，惟对皇太子不能断念。
源氏大将回到二条院私邸，不往西殿，径赴自己室内，独自躺下。不能成眠，痛感人世之可厌，只有皇太子之事，不能忘怀。他想：“父皇在世之时，特地封藤壶妃
