It is my wandering soul returning to myself! "

桐壶院也很悲伤，郑重地遣使吊唁。家中虽遭不幸，反而因此增加光彩，悲哀之中平添了欢喜，左大臣感激之余，流泪不绝。他听从别人的劝告，为祈求女儿复活而举行庄严隆重的法事，又历尽无遗地施行种种救活的办法。然而眼见得尸体已经腐烂，父母虽然痴心妄想地盼望，终不过是毫无希望地度日。到了无可奈何之时，只得将遗骸送往鸟边野火葬场去。悲恸之事，不可尽述。
鸟边野的广大原野上，拥满了各处送葬人和各寺院念佛僧众，几无隙地。桐壶院自不必说，藤壶皇后及东宫太子等的使者，以及其他诸人的使者，都来郑重地吊唁。左大臣悲伤之极，两脚都站不起来，羞愧己身命穷，啼啼哭哭他说：“老夫如此高龄，身逢逆事，以致匍匐难行，何命途之舛！”众人闻言，无不悲叹。这葬仪隆重盛大，喧扰了一夜。到了将近破晓，大家只得告别了这无常的骨灰而归去。
生死乃人世之常事。但源氏公子只见过夕颜一人之死，或所见不多，因此哭泣之哀，异乎寻常。时在八月二十过后，残月当空，凄凉无限。左大臣在归途上思念亡女，心情郁结，愁眉不展。源氏公子看了，十分同情，益增悲戚，两眼只管眺望天空，吟道：
“丽质化青烟，和云上碧天。
夜空凝望处，处处教人怜。 "
源氏公子回左大臣邸后，全然不能成寐。他回忆葵姬年来模样，想道：“为什么我一直认为将来自能得她谅解，总是满不在乎地任情而动，使得她心怀怨恨呢？她终身把我看作一个冷酷无情的薄悻郎，抱恨而死了！”他历历回想，后悔之事甚多，然而悔之晚矣！他穿上了浅黑色丧服，似觉身在梦境，想入非非：“ 如果我比她先死，她一定穿深黑色的丧服吧。”遂又吟道：
“丧衣色淡因遵制，
袖泪成渊痛哭多。 "
吟罢亲为念佛，态度异常优美。然后低声诵经：“法界三昧普贤大士……”其庄严胜于勤修梵行的法师。
源氏公子看到新生的婴儿，想起古歌“若非剩有遗孤在，何以追怀逝世人？”更加泪如泉涌了。他想：“这话果然说得是。倘使连这个遗孤也没有，更加伤心了。”这也可聊以自慰。

老夫人沉溺于悲哀，竟致不能起身，光景甚是危险。家人便延请高僧高道，大修法事，以祈祷健康，一时奔忙骚扰。光阴荏苒，看看过了七七。其间每次超荐亡魂，老夫人总觉得此乃意想不到之事，不肯相信女儿真个已死，只管悲伤哭泣。做父母的，即使子女庸碌粗蠢，也总觉得可爱。何况象葵姬那样聪明伶俐的人，父母痛惜是理之当然。他们只有一个女儿，已觉美中不足。现在丧亡了，真比失去一颗掌上明珠更加痛心。
源氏大将连二条院也全然不去，只管真心地悲伤叹气，朝朝暮暮为亡妻诵经念佛。诸情人处，只写了几封信去。六条妃子跟随女儿斋宫赴禁中左卫门府斋戒，便以清心洁身为理由，不写信给源氏公子。源氏公子早已痛感人世之苦厄，如今又赋悼亡，更觉得一切都可厌弃。若无新生婴儿之羁绊，颇思削发为僧，遁入空门。然而想起了西殿里那个人，没有了他一定孤苦伶仃，心中不免怀念。他夜夜独宿帐中，虽有众宫女在旁侍侯，总是寂寞无聊，常常想起古歌“秋日生离犹恋恋，何况死别两茫茫”之句。他就寝后往往半睡半醒。选用几个嗓音优美的僧人，叫他们晚间在旁诵经念佛。破晓时闻此声音，不胜凄凉寂寞之感。深秋之夜，风声越来越觉凄凉，沁入肺腑。不惯独眠的人，但觉长夜漫漫，不能安枕。有一天清晨，朝雾弥漫之时，有一个人送一封深蓝色的信来，系在一枝初绽的菊花上。其人交了信即便回去。源氏公子觉得此物甚是风流潇洒，一看，是六条妃子的笔迹。信上写道： “久未问候，此心想蒙谅鉴。
侧闻辞世常堕泪，
遥想孤身袖不干。
只因今日晨景迷离，无以自遣，谨呈短柬。 "

源氏公子看了，觉得这封信写得比往日的更加优美，令人不忍释手。既而又想：她自己害死了人，佯装不知，写信来吊慰，其实可恨！但倘就此和她决绝，不通音问，似觉又太残忍。这样对待她，岂不糟塌了她的名誉？心中踌躇不决。终于想道：“死者已矣，无非前世宿命制定。但我何必清清楚楚地看到那生魂作祟的情状呢？”后悔之余，不由得回心转意，对六条妃子的爱情终于不忍断绝。他想写回信，但念此时妃子正陪伴斋宫清心洁身，不宜阅读丧家来信，多时犹豫不决。继而又想：她专诚来信，我置之不理，未免太过无情，便在一张紫灰色的信笺上写道：“久疏问候，但思慕之心，无时或怠。只因身在丧服之中，未便致信此情想蒙谅鉴。
先凋后死皆朝露，
执念深时枉费心。
难怪你怀恨，但务请忘记令人讨厌之事。卿正斋戒，恐不宜阅读此信。我值居丧，亦未便多通音问。 "
此时六条妃子已从左卫门府回到私邸，便悄悄地启信阅读。只因心怀鬼胎，读了源氏公子隐约暗示之语，立刻分明觉察。她想：“原来他全都知道了！”心中非常懊恼。又想：“我身之不幸，实无限量！赢得了'生魂祟人'这个恶名，不知桐壶爷听到了作何感想。亡夫前皇太子与桐壶爷乃同胞兄弟，情谊十分深厚。亡夫弥留之际，曾将女儿斋宫恳切托孤于桐壶爷。桐壶爷常言' 我必代弟照拂此女'，又屡屡劝我仍居宫中。我因守寡之身，不宜沾染红尘，故尔出宫离居。不料遇此稚龄狂童，堕入迷离春梦，平添忧愁苦恨，终于流传如此恶名。我好命苦也！”她心思缭乱，精神异常颓丧。
虽然如此，但六条妃子对世间万般兴事，均有高尚优雅之趣味，自昔以才女著名于世。此次斋宫从左卫门府迁居嵯哦野宫，也举办种种饶有风情的兴事。她陪着女儿来到野宫之后，几个风流的殿上公卿不惜冒霜犯露，披星戴月，常到嵯峨野宫附近来遨游。源氏公子闻之，不由想道：“这也难怪。妃子多才多艺，品貌十全其美，如果看破红尘，出家修行，当然会寂寞的。”
葵姬七七佛事都做完了。这七七四十九天之内，源氏公子一直笼闭在左大臣邸内。头中将现已升任三位中将，知道他不惯闭居，甚是同情，常常陪伴他，为他讲述世间种种见闻，以资安慰。重大严肃的事情也有，象住日那样轻薄好色的事情也有。尤其是关于那个内侍的事，常常取作笑柄。源氏公子听到他谈内侍，总是劝诫：“哎吁，罪过啊！不要拿这老祖母来开玩笑！”然而每逢谈起，总觉得可笑。他们毫无顾虑，互相纵谈种种偷香窃玉的事情。例如那年春天某月十六之夜在常陆亲王邸内相遇之事，以及秋天源氏公子与末摘花幽会后回宫的早晨被头中将嘲笑的事情等等。结果往往是慨叹人世之无常，相与泣下。
有一日傍晚，愁云密布，降下一天时雨；中将脱去深色丧服，改穿淡色，风姿英爽，使见者自惭形秽。他翩翩然地来见源氏公子。公子靠在西面边门口的栏杆上，正在闲眺庭前经霜变色的花木。其时晚风凄厉，冷雨连绵。公子情怀悲戚，泪珠几欲与雨滴争多。他两手支颐，独自闲吟“为雨为云今不知”之诗，风度非常潇洒凄艳。中将色情心动，注视良久，想道：“一个女人倘使抛开了这男人而死，其阴魂一定长留世间，不肯离开他呢。” 便走近前去，相对坐下。源氏公子衣衫零乱，便把衣服上的带子系上。他穿的丧服比中将颜色稍深，里面衬着鲜红色衬衣，简单朴素，然而异常美观，令人百看不厌：中将以凄凉之眼色仰望天空，自言自语地吟道：
“为雨为云皆漠漠，
不知何处是芳魂。
去向不明了！”源氏公子便吟道：
“芳魂化作潇潇雨，
漠漠长空也泪淋。 "
中将看见源氏公子吟时愁容满面，哀思不浅，窃自想道：“原来我看错了：我以为源氏公子这几年来对阿妹并无何等深恩重爱，只因桐壶爷屡次训诫他，父亲也一片苦心地疼爱他，加之他和母亲乃姑侄之谊，有此种种关系，所以他不便抛弃，勉强敷衍，实乃一大遗憾。岂知我这看法全是误解，原来他对这正夫人是非常疼爱又重视的！”他恍然大悟之后，便觉葵姬之死越发可惜，仿佛家里失去了光彩，何等不幸！
唐人刘禹锡《有所嗟》诗云：“庾令楼中初见时，武昌春柳似腰支。相逢相失两如梦，为雨为云今不知。” 此诗及刘禹锡诗，皆根据宋王《高唐赋》中语：“昔者，先王尝游高唐，怠而昼寝，梦见一妇人，曰'妾巫山之女也，为高唐之客，闻君游高唐，愿荐枕席。' 王因幸之。去而辞日：'妾在巫山之阳，高丘之（山＋且），旦为初云，暮为行雨。朝朝暮暮，阳台之下。'旦朝视之，如言。”
中将去后，源氏公子看见霜凋的草中有龙胆花与抚子花正在盛开，便命侍女折取抚子花一枝，写一封信，叫小公子的乳母宰相君将花和信呈送老夫人。信中写的是：
“草枯篱畔鲜花小，
好作残秋遗物看。
老夫人将谓以花比残秋，花应逊色耶？”小公子天真烂漫的笑颜，的确美丽可爱。老夫人的眼泪，比风中的枯叶更加容易掉落。看了这信，立刻流下泪来，情不自禁，勉力吟道：
“草枯篱畔花虽美，
看后翻教袖不干。 "
花比小公子，残秋比已死的葵姬。
源氏公子闭居邸内，寂寞无聊。忽念槿姬平时虽然态度冷淡，但照她的性情推量起来，对公子今日悼亡的悲哀定然颇能理解，便写一封信给她。信送到时，天色已暮，虽然近来久不通信了，但槿姬的侍女们知道以前也曾偶尔来信，并不引以为怪，便将信呈阅。槿姬但见一张天蓝色的中国纸上写道：
“饱尝岁岁悲秋味，
此日黄昏泪独多。
真乃'年年十月愁霖雨'了。”众侍女说：“这封信写得格外用心，比以前的饶有风趣，似乎未便置之不理呢。”槿姬自己也这样想，便答复道：“闻君深宫孤寂，不胜同情。但正如古歌所云：'恋情倘染色，虽浓亦可观。我今无色相，安得请君看？' 因此未能吊慰。
秋雾生时悲永诀，
满天风雨惹人愁！ "
此信用淡墨色写成。想是心理作用吧，似觉非常可爱。
此古歌按《河海抄》所引，下一句为“不及今年落泪多”。

原来世间无论何事，都是实行不及预想之美。源氏公子的脾气正是如此。他对于顽强不屈的人，恋慕特别深切，他想：“槿姬不许我求爱，但每逢机会，总不惜向我表示风趣。这证明对此人是可以互通真情的。倘过分多情，惹人注目，反而会暴露多余的缺陷。我不愿把西殿里那个人养成这种性情。”他推想紫姬近日一定寂寞无聊，思念之心，无时或息。但也只觉得是关怀一个无母的孤儿，并不担心她象情人一般因久别而怀恨。此真乃称心之事。
天色全黑了，源氏公子教人把灯火移近座旁，命几个亲近的侍女坐在身旁，相与闲谈。其中有一个名叫中纳言君的，早就与公子暗中有染，但公子现正居丧，全不涉及此种关系。众侍女看着他，都在心中赞叹：“到底是个有气节的人！”公子便和她们亲切地闲话世间种种普通事情。后来公子说：“近来大家都摒除了外间一切事情，团聚在此，倒比夫人在世之时更加亲切了。但想起了以后不能常常如此，怎不教人恋恋不舍？死别的悲恸且不说，仅乎想起此事，也就教人伤心难堪了。”众侍女听了这话都吞声饮泣。有一人说道：“说起那桩不可挽回之事：只觉得黯然销魂，但这是无可奈何的了！想起了公子今后将离开此地，另赴他处，不复回顾，真教我们……”她说到这里，喉头哽咽，说不下去了。源氏公子看看众侍女，觉得她们很可怜，便答道：“岂有不复回顾之理？你们不要把我看作如此薄情之人！倘有眼光长远的人，定能了解我的衷心。不过我的寿命也是修短无常的啊！” 他的眼睛注视灯火，泪盈于睫，神情十分凄艳。
侍女之中，有一个葵姬所特别爱怜的女童，名叫贵君，父母双亡，身世孤苦。派氏公子认为此人的确可怜可爱，对她说：“ 贵君，今后由我来做你的保护人。”贵君便嘤嘤地哭泣了。她身穿一件短短的衫子，染得比别人更黑。外面罩着黑色上衣和萱草色裙子，姿态十分娇美，公子又对众侍女说：“但愿不忘旧情的人，忍耐目前的寂寥，切勿抛舍这个婴儿，大家照旧在此服务。已经凤去台空，若再故人星散，岂不更增冷落？”他劝大家耐心忍性，长久共处。但众侍女都想：“哪有这事！自今以后，恐怕更加盼不到你的光临了吧！”大家不胜寂寥之感。
左大臣按照各人身分，将种种日用物品，以及纪念死者的种种遗物，分别赏赐众侍女。随意为之，并不过分张扬。
且说源氏公子长此闭居一室，沉思瞑想，实非所宜，便发心入宫参见桐壶院。车驾已备，侍从齐集。天公体会人意，降下一番时雨，仿佛为此别离而洒同情之泪。摧残木叶的寒风蓦地剧烈起来，在旁侍候的诸人，尽皆垂头丧气。近日稍干的衣袖，今日又湿透了。预定出宫之后，今夜即在二条院私邸泊宿。侍从人等便各作准备，先赴二条院等候。公子今日并非一去不回，但左大臣邸内诸人都悲伤不堪，左大臣夫妇见此光景，又添了一种新愁。
源氏公子写一封信给老夫人，说道：“只因父皇盼待已久，今日即拟入宫参谒。虽是暂别，但念此次惨遭巨厄，微命仍得苟延至今，便觉心乱如麻，不胜悲切。本当前来面辞，因恐反添烦恼，故暂不求见。”老夫人流泪过多，两眼昏花，展读来书，字迹难辨，只是悲恸，不能作书答复。
左大臣立即出来相送。悲伤不堪，只管以袖掩面。左右侍从睹此情状，无不感动泣下。源氏大将抚今思昔，悲从中来，热泪盈眶，愁容可掬，然而举止安详，仪态优美。左大臣迟疑良久，对公子言道：“老夫年迈，不任忧患。即使小有失意，亦必伤心坠泪；何况遭此巨厄，两袖无有干时。方寸缭乱，不能自制。举止失常，难于见人。深恐颓丧之余，有失礼仪，因此不敢晋谒上皇。吾婿入宫，便中望将此等情状奏闻，善为说辞，衰朽之年，来日无多，岂料遭此逆事，真乃命途多舛！”他强自镇静，好容易说出了这番话，样子实甚可怜。
源氏公子几度举袖掩面，安慰他道：“寿夭无常，修短无定，固知此乃人世之常态，但躬逢其事，痛苦实不堪言！小婿自当将此情状向父皇奏闻，定能深蒙鉴察。”左大臣便催促：“霖雨连绵，恐无止时。吾婿不如乘天色未黑之时，早早动身。”
源氏公子举目四顾，但见帷屏后面、纸隔扇旁边，以及各处空地方，聚集着侍女约三十人。她们都穿着黑色丧服，有的深黑，有的浅黑，个个愁容满面，神色沮丧，样子非常可怜。左大臣看了，对源氏公子说：“我女儿虽然死了，但你所舍不得的小公子留在这里，今后你便中决不会不来看视。我们都以此自慰。然而这些冥顽无知的侍女，都以为你将从此抛舍这个旧家，今后不再回顾。她们现在倒不是为死别而伤心，却是为了今后不得再象从前那样时时侍奉左右而悲叹。这也是理之当然。往日你俩不能融洽相处，我却常常指望你们将来言归于好，不道已成空花泡影！唉，今天的暮色好不凄凉呵！”说罢又淌下泪来。
源氏公子答道：“这是那班浅见之人的过虑而已。我往日曾经静候双方谅解，其间有时不免久疏问候。但现在还有什么理由可说而不来探访呢？今后我心当蒙谅解了。”说罢，告辞出门。
左大臣目送源氏公子出门后，回到公子旧居的房间里，但见室中自装饰以至一切布置，全同葵姬生前一样，毫无变动。然而空洞无主，仿佛蜕去后的蝉壳。案上散置着笔砚等物，又有公子所弃置的墨稿。左大臣便取来观看。泪眼昏花，难于分辨，只得努力眨眼，将泪水挤出。众青年侍女看到这模样，觉得滑稽，悲哀之中不禁微笑起来。这些墨稿之中，有缠绵悱恻的古诗，有汉文的，也有日文的。无论汉字或假名，都有种种体裁，新颖秀美。左大臣叹道：“真乃心灵手巧！”仰望天空，耽入沉思。心念如此英才，今后将成为外人，岂不可惜！只见源氏公子在“旧枕故衾谁与共？”这句诗旁写着：
“爱此合欢榻，依依不忍离。
芳魂泉壤下，忆此更伤悲。 "
又见另一张纸上“霜华白”一句旁边写着：
“抚子多朝露，孤眠泪亦多。
空床尘已积，夜夜对愁魔。 "
又见其间夹着一枝已枯的抚子花，想是前天送老夫人信时摘得的。左大臣便将此花送给老夫人看，对她说道：“不能挽回之事，今已无可奈何了。仔细想来，此等可悲的逆事，世间并非没有。多管是与女儿宿缘不深，致使我等遭此苦厄：如此一想，我反而怨恨前世冤孽，悼念之心也断绝了。岂知日月推迁，恋念愈深，痛苦难堪。况且这大将今后将成为外人，岂不可惜？教我好伤心也！回忆往日一二日不见，或踪迹稍疏，我便忽忽若有所失，胸中闷闷不乐。今后缘断，我家便似失却了日月光华，教我如何活下去呢？”伤心之极，不禁放声大哭。左右几个年纪较大的侍女，睹此情状，不胜悲痛，同声号哭起来。这夕暮的光景好不凄凉！
白居易中有句云：“鸳鸯瓦冷霜华重，翡翠衾寒谁与共？” 今作“旧枕故衾”，想是根据别本。
