Chapter 1 editor's note

The Shanghai Library has collected a large number of newspapers and periodicals published in the isolated island of Shanghai during the Anti-Japanese War. Reading through those newspapers and periodicals that have begun to turn yellow and constantly shed confetti, although time has passed and the newspapers and periodicals are very old, it is impossible not to be read by these words and pictures. I am moved because there are desperate cries and resistance in these words and pictures, and there are bloody scenes; some pictures are really unbearable for us, because in peaceful times, it is difficult to see such a complete annihilation of human nature, and the outburst of animal nature.Through these yellowed newspapers and magazines, time seems to have returned to the critical moment of the Chinese nation's life and death 60 years ago. We seem to see the figures of the sons and daughters of the Chinese people, and we seem to smell the bloody massacre.

Many articles in these newspapers and periodicals reflect the spirit of the front-line generals fighting to the end, as well as their understanding of the situation of the war of resistance; , the scenes and spirit of fighting bloody battles with the Japanese devils; some of them recorded the countless crimes committed by the Japanese devils in China through the mouths of refugees or international friends. On the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the victory of the Anti-Japanese War, in order to reflect that special historical moment, we browsed the collection materials to the maximum extent, and tried to recall the experience brought to the Chinese nation at a close distance through the feelings and records of those who were in the historical scene. A catastrophic war.Based on this, we have compiled a series of books including "The Devils Are Coming - A Record of Japanese Atrocities", "The Great Wall of Flesh and Blood - Interviews with Generals on the Frontline of the Anti-Japanese War", and "Slashing the Devils with a Big Sword - China in the War of Anti-Japanese War", hoping that readers will be able to learn more during the reading process. Feel the indomitable spirit of the Chinese nation, the life and death passion of those real men who built the Great Wall with their flesh and blood without hesitation, and always bear in mind the heavy trauma caused by the Japanese invaders to the Chinese nation.

From July 1937 to August 1945, the 8-year-long Chinese Anti-Japanese War was under the banner of the Anti-Japanese National United Front advocated by the Communist Party of China, based on the cooperation between the Kuomintang and the Communist Party, and the workers, peasants, soldiers, scholars, and business people of all walks of life , all democratic parties, anti-Japanese groups, patriots from all walks of life and overseas Chinese participated in a nationwide war of resistance. It was the first national liberation war in which the Chinese nation was completely victorious against the invasion of foreign enemies in more than a hundred years, and it was also a turning point for the Chinese nation from weakness to prosperity.China was the country that participated in the war first, ended the latest, fought for the longest time, and made huge national sacrifices in World War II.The Chinese War of Resistance Against Japanese Aggression was an integral and important part of the World Anti-Fascist War, and the Chinese battlefield was the main battlefield in the east of the world to fight against Japanese fascism.During the compilation process, in order to fully reflect the situation of the war of resistance against Japan, we included from different aspects and angles the Kuomintang and the Communist Party from Zhu De, Peng Dehuai, Ye Ting, Chen Yi, Li Zongren, Feng Yuxiang, down to ordinary soldiers, and guerrilla generals or interviews, or bloody Killing Communications. It reproduces the story of the anti-Japanese soldiers and civilians who overcame many difficulties and bravely killed the enemy with blood with the words and pictures at that time, and recalls the heroic deeds of some patriotic anti-Japanese soldiers who shocked the world, wept ghosts and gods, and died in battle.

It should be noted that, according to the agreement reached between the KMT and the Communist Party, on August 22, 1937, the Military Commission of the Kuomintang government announced that the main force of the Red Army would be reorganized into the Eighth Route Army of the National Revolutionary Army, with Zhu De as the commander-in-chief and Peng Dehuai as the deputy commander-in-chief. division. On September 11, the Military Commission of the Kuomintang government changed the Eighth Route Army to the Eighteenth Army, and the General Command was renamed the General Command, with Zhu De and Peng Dehuai serving as commander-in-chief and deputy commander-in-chief.However, during the War of Resistance Against Japan, it was customary to refer to the 18th Army as the Eighth Route Army, or to mix the names "18th Army" and "Eighth Route Army".

During the editing process, we did not add any subjective comments to all the articles, except for some minor deletions and revisions, basically maintaining the original appearance. In order to make it easier for readers to find the source of the article, the source of each article is indicated, emphasizing the historical value of the article.
