Chapter 1 Chapter 1 Surrender to who you are

new alchemy 奥修 4785Words 2018-03-20
There are three scriptures that are essential to transforming lives, and in a way they are the ultimate. The first sentence: Be unambitious. "Kill ambition altogether." Unless ambition is killed, you will still be in misery.Ambition is the source of all misery. What is ambition? A wants to be B, the poor want to be rich, and the ugly wants to be beautiful.Everyone longs to be someone else, to be something other than what he is.No one is happy with themselves. That's called ambition. Whatever you are, you are not satisfied. This is ambition. Then you are doomed to misery, because you cannot become anything else. You can only be yourself; you cannot become anything else.Everything else is just useless, harmful, dangerous. You can waste your whole life, your whole existence.

Whatever you are, you are.Accept it; don't desire it to become something else. This is what is called being unambitious. No ambition is essential to all spiritual transformation, because once you accept yourself, many things start to happen. But first thing....If you accept yourself completely, the first thing that will happen to you is a life without tension. There will be no tension. You don't want to become something else; there is nowhere else to go.Then you can be in the here and now. There will be no comparison. You yourself are unique. You stop thinking from someone else's point of view.

Then there is no future.Ambition needs a future, it needs room to grow.It cannot grow here and now; because there is no space. This moment is so small and atomic.Ambition requires the future; and the greater the ambition, the greater the future required. If your ambition is too great to be filled by this life, you will create another life. You will create heaven, you will create moksha, you will create the concept of rebirth.I'm not saying there is no rebirth.I mean you believe in rebirth not because it exists, but because your ambitions are too big to fill this lifetime.Your belief in rebirth, reincarnation, is not because it is a fact.Your beliefs are born of ambition and desire.Reincarnation may be a fact, but to you it is a fiction. To you it's just the future, it's just more space for you to move into.

Remember, you cannot be ambitious in the present moment. That is impossible. There will be no space. The present moment is as tiny as an atom, so small that you cannot get into it.You can be in it, but you cannot desire in it.The present moment is long enough to exist, but the present moment is not long enough to desire. To desire you need future, time.Indeed, time exists because of desire. For the trees here, there is no time. For the birds that are singing here, there is no time. For the stars, the sun and the earth, there will be no time; there will be no past and no future. Your desires create the future.Your memory creates the past. They are all part of your mind.Do not desire, and the future will disappear. And how can you be nervous when there is no future? How can it be?There can be no tension if there is no future. And if there is no past, if you know that the past is just memory, just dust on the road, how can there be worry?Worry comes with the past. And with the future - planning, imagining, projecting - there is tension. You are here and now when the past is dropped and the future is not yet open.No worry, no tension, no pain.

Unambition means accepting who you are.But that does not mean that the possibility of growth does not exist.Instead, when you accept yourself for who you are, transformation begins to be set.You start to grow, but on a different level. So the dimension is not in the future, but in eternity. It is important to understand this distinction well. You have two options. If you go into the future, you go into the mind: a fictional, dream world. If you do not go into the future, then from this moment a different dimension opens up for you.You can enter eternity.Eternity is hidden in this moment. If you can be here and now, in this moment, you are in eternity. If you keep thinking about the future and the past, you are living in the present. This world is dunya, and eternity is Nirvana.

Buddha is said to have said repeatedly that if you can be in the present moment, you don't need any meditation techniques. That's enough. It will do everything necessary. But if you are ambitious, how can you be in the present? An ambitious mind cannot be in the present. It can be anywhere, but it cannot be in the present.Ambitious minds always leave the present. It is thinking of eternity; it is thinking of tomorrow. It is thinking about the next life; it is not interested in this life here.It has an interest in what it should become. It is not interested in 'is'; it is always interested in 'should'.That interest is non-religious.The first verse is "kill ambition whole" so you can be here and now so you can go into eternity.

"Desire to kill life" - the second verse. "Desire to kill life".The laws of life are very contradictory. If you desire life, you will miss it.That's the surest way to miss it.If you desire life, you miss it; but if you do not desire it, you will have life in abundance. Through desire you go against life. That seems contradictory. That is indeed a contradiction. We must gain a deep understanding of this law of contradiction. Why do you miss life when you desire it?Why?That's not how it should be.Logically, mathematically, it shouldn't be.If someone desires life, why would he miss it?Its mechanism of action is that when you desire, you re-enter the future. And life is here!Life is already like this, how can you desire it?Only that which does not exist can be desired. And life exists. How can you desire it?It's already there; it's already happened. You are life.

If you desire life, you will miss it.Through desire you are moving away from life.Every desire takes you further. That's why so many people emphasize desirelessness.Buddha or those who talk about desirelessness are not against life.On the contrary, they are in favor of life. But they say, "Don't desire." It seems to us that they are against life, life-denying.They are not. We are missing life all the time through desire. That's why Buddha said, "Don't desire."What happens if you don't desire? This event of life is going to happen to you.It has been happening, but you cannot watch it because your eyes are fixed on the future. You are elsewhere; your mind is not here.Life is here and you are not, so your meeting with life has become impossible. Then you will crave life, desire life, but you will go on missing it.

Let life happen to you.How to do this?Be here with your full attention.Have no desire to go elsewhere. The moment you start desiring life, you become afraid of death. It is bound to be so because the desire for life creates the fear of death. There is no such thing as death. In fact, nothing dies; nothing can die. That is impossible. The event of death never happens; death does not exist. So why do we feel so much death, why are we so afraid of death? Why are we afraid of something that doesn't exist? We fear death because of our desire for life. The desire for life creates a relative fear: the fear of death. We do not understand life, but we desire life. Then fear enters into that life which will be destroyed.

We see death happen... people die.Have you ever noticed that it is always someone else who dies, never you? It's always someone else who dies. You see death from outside; you have not seen death from within. You see someone dying, but you don't know what is going on in his innermost core. You only know what's happening on the surface. The surface is dead; it is no longer alive and the person cannot breathe. But what is happening at the core, at the very being, at the center? You do not know. Nobody contemplates death. And no one can contemplate death, because there is only one way to contemplate it: that is you go to the innermost core of yourself and contemplate there. But death never happens there. That's why Buddha would laugh at death, Krishna would laugh at death.

In the Gita, Krishna says to Arjuna, "Don't be afraid. Don't think that everyone is going to die." Nobody is going to die; you can't kill anybody. That is impossible. In this world, nothing can be destroyed, not even a microbe.Destruction is impossible.Only change is possible. Life goes on moving. One wave dies (looks dead), and then another rises.Only forms disappear and new forms arise, but nothing dies and nothing is born. If nothing can die, then nothing can be born, because death is only possible if something is born.Birth and death are two fallacious things. You existed before birth, otherwise birth was impossible; and you will exist after death, otherwise it would not be possible for you to be here and now.But the desire to cling to life creates the fear of death. If you stop desiring life, the fear of death disappears immediately. And when the fear of death disappears, you can understand what life is.A mind shaking with fear and pain cannot understand.Knowing requires a very calm, fearless, fearless awareness. To desire life is to fear death. This verse says "kill the desire for life" and then the fear of death disappears. And when there is no death, no attachment to life, you will know what life is because it has happened to you.You are it!It is not something foreign; it is something inherent. It has happened. You are breathing in it.You are like a fish in the ocean of life, but you are not aware of it because your attention is preoccupied with the future. To desire is to be occupied by the future.Desirelessness means living in the here and now. Then comes the third verse: "Kill the desire to be comfortable, the desire to be happy." It looks very sad, depressed, life-denying.It is not.The more you desire comfort, the more uncomfortable you will feel. The more you desire comfort, the more discomfort you create for yourself, because discomfort is related to the desire to be comfortable. The more you demand happiness, the more you will be in pain.Pain is a shadow. The greater the desire for pleasure, the greater the shadow. You ask for happiness and you never get it.You will only suffer from frustration. Why?Because there is only one way to be happy, and that is to be happy here and now.Happiness is not an outcome. It's a way of life. Happiness is not the end result of desire. It is an attitude, not a desire. If you know how to be, you can be happy here and now; but if you don't know how to be and you go on wanting it, you will never be happy.Happiness is an art. It's a way of life. Right in this moment, if you can be still and aware of the life around you and within you, you will be happy. The birds are singing and the wind is blowing. The trees are happy, the sky is happy, everything in existence is happy except you.Existence is joy, it is an eternal celebration, a festival.Carefully watch existence!Every tree is in a festive mood, every bird is in a festive mood.Everything except humans is in a festive mood. The whole existence is a festival, a continuous, continuous festival. There is no depression, no death, no misery anywhere but in the human mind.Something is wrong with the human mind, and there is nothing wrong with existence.Something went wrong with you, and the situation was fine. Why are humans unhappy? No animal is as unhappy as man, no bird is as unhappy as man, no fish is as unhappy as man.Why are humans so unhappy?Because man desires to be happy, and the birds are happy now; the trees are happy now.Man desires to be happy; he is never happy here and now.He is always looking for happiness and keeps missing it.Happiness is here. It's happening all around you.Let it go inside. become part of existence.Don't go into the future.Existence never goes into the future; only the mind goes into the future. This is what I call meditation: here, not into the future.Be unambitious, kill all life's desire, don't desire happiness, and then you will be happy, and no one can destroy your happiness. Then it is impossible for you not to be happy. Then you will be immortal, and you will have eternal life.In fact, eternal life has happened, but you are not aware of it.Then you will be fulfilled.Without ambition you will be fulfilled. you are unique.Everything, every peak experience that can happen to anyone, can happen to you; but it will happen in a unique way.It has happened to Buddha, Jesus, Zarathustra, and it will happen to you.But it never happens the same way. What happened to you will not be like what happened to Buddha. What happens to you will not be like what happened to Jesus. It will happen in a unique, personal way. When it happens to you it will definitely be a whole new look. The innermost core of the experience will be the same, the same bliss, the same silence, the same enlightenment, but on the surface everything will be different. So don't imitate anyone. That's part of the ambition.Do not imitate Buddha, do not imitate Jesus.Try to be yourself. And, it's no use even trying.Just be yourself. When you are yourself, you are open to all possibilities. When you are yourself, the whole existence starts helping you.You don't fight it. When you're not fighting....This is what trust means.Existence happens to you when you are not fighting. If you fight existence you are only destroying yourself, you are only destroying your possibility, your energy, your life, your being.Don't fight!Surrender to existence.Existence wants you to accept yourself, not try to be something else, and enlightenment can happen at any moment.Enlightenment can happen in this moment; there is no need to wait.
